Smooth Wind Power Fluctuation Based on Battery Energy Storage System for Wind Farm

  • This paper addresses on a wind power system with BESS(Battery Energy Storage System). The concerned system consists of four parts: the wind speed production model, the wind turbine model, configure capacity of the battery energy storage, battery model and control of the BESS. First of all, we produce wind speed by 4-component composite wind speed model. Secondly, the maximum available wind power is determined by analyzing the produced wind speed and the characteristic curve of wind power. Thirdly, we configure capacity of the BESS according to wind speed and characteristic curve of wind speed-power. Then, we propose a control strategy to track the power reference. Finally, some simulations have been demonstrated to visualize the feasibility of the proposed methodology.

Single Sensor Charging System with MPPT Capability for Standalone Streetlight Applications

  • Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and battery charging control are two important functions for a solar battery charger. The former improves utilization of the available solar energy, while the latter ensures a prolonged battery life. Nevertheless, complete implementation of both functions can be complex and costly, especially for low voltage application such as standalone street lamps. In this paper, the operation of a solar battery charger for standalone street light systems is investigated. Using only one voltage sensor, the solar charger is able to operate in both MPPT and constant voltage (CV) charging mode, hence providing high performance at a low cost. Using a lab prototype and a solar simulator, the operation of the charger system is demonstrated and its performance under varying irradiance is validated.

  • This paper describes the operation mode development for the grid-tied PMSG(permanent magnet synchronous generator) wind power system combined with a battery energy storage. The development of operation modes was carried out through simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software and experiments with a 10kW hardware prototype. The detailed simulation models for PMSG wind power system and battery energy storage were developed using user-defined models programed with C-code. A 10kW hardware simulator was built and tested in connection with the local load and the utility power. The simulation and experimental results confirm that the grid-tied PMSG wind power system combined with battery energy storage can supply highly reliable power to the local load in various operation modes.

  • This paper proposed a construction of BMS to adopt energy storage system using flow battery. To operate flow battery system with BMS, there are motor drive system to pump electrolyte up. And it needs sensors to check leaking and temperature. The proposed system is verified by experiment.

  • This paper proposes the battery charging algorithm for small-scale wind power generator using three phase PWM converter. it is impossible to control output power of the converter in over wind speed region since back EMF of PMSG is higer than battery voltage. Therefore, battery charging algorithm is proposed to expand battery charging over wind speed region. The suggested method is using the q-axis current for battery charging in the rated wind speed region. In the over wind speed region after it lower back EMF of PMSG using d-axis current it can control output power of the converter. The validity of the proposed algorithm are verified by experiments.

  • This paper proposes a State-of-Charge (SOC) balancing control of Battery Power Modules (BPMs) for a modularized battery for Electric Vehicles (EVs) without additional balancing circuits. The BPMs are substituted with the single converter in EVs located between the battery and the inverter. The BPM is composed of a two-phase interleaved boost converter with battery modules. The discharge current of each battery module can be controlled individually by using the BPM to achieve a balanced state as well as increased utilization of the battery capacity. Also, an SOC balancing method is proposed to reduce the equalization time, which satisfies the regulation of a constant DC-link voltage and a demand of the output power. The proposed system and the SOC balancing method are verified through simulation and experiment.

  • When designing a redox flow battery system, compression of battery stack is required to prevent leakage of electrolyte and to reduce contact resistance between cell components. In addition, stack compression leads to deformation of the porous carbon electrode, which results in lower porosity and smaller cross-sectional area for electrolyte flow. In this paper, we investigate the effects of electrode compression on the cell performance by applying multi-dimensional, transient model of all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Simulation result reveals that large compression leads to greater pressure drop throughout the electrodes, which requires large pumping power to circulate electrolyte while lowered ohmic resistance results in better power capability of the battery. Also, cell compression results in imbalance between anolyte and catholyte and convective crossover of vanadium ions through the separator due to large pressure difference between negative and positive electrodes. Although it is predicted that the battery power is quickly improved due to the reduced ohmic resistance, the capacity decay of the battery is accelerated in the long term operation when the battery cell is compressed. Therefore, it is important to optimize the battery performance by taking trade-off between power and capacity when designing VRFB system.

  • 본 논문에서는 PCU(Power Control Unit)의 성능을 최적화 시킬 수 있는 동작모드를 제안하고 제작하여 그 결과를 보고 하였다. 특히 세 개의 기능별 모듈이 최적의 동작 상태를 유지할 수 있도록 버스의 전압과 연동되게 제어회로를 구성하여 동작 우선순위를 정하고 필요에 따라 자동적으로 동작하도록 최적 동작 제어 방식을 제안하였다. PCU는 태양광 전력을 부하와 연결된 버스에 정전압으로 변환시키는 S3R(Sequential Switching Shunt Regulator)과 보조 에너지 저장장치인 배터리에 잉여 전력을 저장하는 BCR(Battery Charge Regulator) 및 배터리에 충전되어 있던 전력을 부하에 공급하는 BDR(Battery Discharge Regulator)로 구성되어 있다. 세 개의 전력변환 모듈은 위성용 전원장치의 특성상 높은 신뢰성을 유지하기 위해서 각각의 모듈이 병렬로 동작하며, 특히 각 모듈의 기능이 최적의 상태를 유지하기 위해서 안정된 버스 전압이 상시 유지되어야 한다.
