  • As(V) adsorption on aluminum oxide powder which was recycled from industrial wastes containing aluminum hydroxide was evaluated. Aluminum oxide powder in this study was prepared by calcinating aluminum hydroxide wastes at$550^{\circ}C$. Spectroscopic analysis indicated that the aluminum hydroxide wastes were changed to aluminum oxide by calcination. Arsenic adsorption isotherm was conducted with variation of ionic strength and multiple-ion systems using Ca(II) and Cu(II). As(V) removal showed typical anionic adsorption characteristics that the removal efficiency decreased with increasing pH in single As(V) system as well as in binary and ternary system. More than 80% of As(V) at an initial concentration of $5{\times}10^{-5}$ M was removed from aluminum oxide powder in As(V) single system. The effect of ionic strength on As(V) adsorption was negligible, which indicated the strong bonding between aluminum oxide powder and As(V). The removal efficiency of As(V) was higher in a binary system with Cu(II) than in a binary system with Ca(II).

  • Waste concrete powder was used to remove fluoride ions in highly concentrated fluoride wastewater. 92.6% of fluoride in 100 mg F/L wastewater was removed by 1% dose of the cement paste powder that represents characteristics of waste concrete powder, whereas the removal efficiencies of raw cement and lime were 47.3% and 96.4%, respectively. The cement paste powder was competitive to lime, common fluoride removal agent. Various Ca-bearing hydrates such as portlandite, calcium silicate hydrate, and ettringite in cement paste slurry can remove fluoride by precipitating $CaF_2$ and absorbing $F^-$ ions. In the experiments using both cement paste and lime, 50~67% of lime can be substituted by cement paste to satisfy fluoride effluent limitation of 15 mg/L. Since cement paste has higher acid neutralization capacity than lime, it can be recycled to neutralize more acid and to remove more fluoride. Therefore waste concrete powder can be more economical and viable alternative for lime in fluoride wastewater treatment.

  • The removal of Microcystis aeruginosa and Chlorella zofingiensis by ceramic powder was investigated on the basis of both the particle size (under 0.05, 0.1, 1 mm) and the dosage (0.1, 1, $10\;g\;L^{-1}$) of the ceramic powder. The removal efficiencies of M. aeruginosa and C. zofingiensis were highest with a particle size of 0.05 mm and a dosage of $1\;g\;L^{-1}$ of the ceramic powder in laboratory experiment. $chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ concentrations decreased in both field and enclosure samples with a particle size of 0.05 mm and a dosage of $1\;g\;L^{-1}$ of ceramic powder, resulting in the removal efficiencies of 67 and 69%, respectively. Consequently, it was concluded that the ceramic powder could be used to control algal bloom by removing $chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ in eutrophic waters.

  • We studied the adsorption characteristics on the treatment process of heavy metal wastewater by using cuttle fish bones powder. When adding the 0.25% cuttle fish born powder in the heavy metal solution, $Fe^{3+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ were high removed than other heavy metals as above 95%. In the solution which was adjusted to pH 5, 7 and 9, there was not observed the difference thing on the heavy metal removal rate. At test using plating wastewater treatment, adding 1%, 1.5% and 2% of the cuttle fish born powder, the heavy metal removal rate were as follows; Zn 12.5 - 37.5%, Mn 18.0 - 62.2%, Cd 36.8 -93.0%, Cu 51.4 - 97.4%, Cr 70.8 - 99.1%, Fe 87.2 - 99.3% and Pb 92.8 - 99.9%. When adding the 0.15% cuttle fish born powder and mixing for 20 minutes, the solution was happened the adsorption equability. Applied this results to the Freundlich's iso-thermal equation, we found the cuttle fish born's probability as a good adsorbent.

  • The applicability of oil palm EFB(Empty Fiber Bunch) to the papermaking process as a functional organic filler was investigated in this study. Since the EFB has similar chemical composition to the lignocellulose materials such as wood fiber, the fines of EFB was applied to the handsheet paper as an alternative to wood powder which were used as an organic filler to improve water removal efficiency and bulk. The experiments showed that the EFB fines resulted in the higher water removal efficiency at the wet pressing process and leaded to the higher bulk than those of wood powder. In case of 10 % addition of organic filler, the strength properties were not significantly changed. Those results suggested that the EFB could be used as a new organic filler for improving water removal efficiency and bulk property.

  • Anti-graffiti coatings have become more important. These layers must guarantee excellent corrosion protection properties, and graffiti must be easily removable, without reducing protection and aesthetic properties. In this study, anti-graffiti and corrosion behavior of two anti-graffiti polyurethane powder coatings were studied. These layers were deposited on aluminum substrate, with two different surface finishes, smooth, and wrinkled. The action of four different removers are investigated. Graffiti were drawn on coatings by means of red acrylic spray paint. Methyl-ethyl-ketone (MEK) and a "commercial" remover were the most effective solvents, in terms of graffiti removal capability, producing limited change in aesthetical surface aspect for smooth finishing. The wrinkled surface was less resistant. Corrosion protection properties, after removal action and contact with the remover, were evaluate by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. After approximately 5 hours, coatings were no longer protective due to formation of defects. To simulate the weathering effect, UV-B cyclic test (4 hours of UV exposure followed by 4 hours of saturated humidity at $50^{\circ}C$) were performed for 2000 hours. Gloss and color changes were measured, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were performed after aging and graffiti removal.

  • The high speed elimination process of suspended solid was investigated to treat the pulp waste water by using surface modified magnetite particle and magnetic power. The effects of the various aluminum salts such as Al(NO$_3$)$_3$ㆍ9$H_2O$, AlC1$_3$ㆍ6$H_2O$, $Al_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ㆍ13∼14 on the COD, BOD and suspended solid were systematically studied. It has been found that the 2.0 wt% of Al was most effective for the modification of Fe$_3$O$_4$ powder and then best for the treatment of pulp waste water, Optimum quantity of modified magnetite in this study was 12 wt%, and aging time was found to be 12 hours. Comparing with the conventional process, the required time for SS removal was drastically decreased. BOB and COD were also effectively removed when applied to the pulp wastewater.

  • The effect of vacuum annealing on the oxidation behavior of milled WC-15%Co powder mixture has been studied. A cobalt component in the milled powder mixture was oxidized preferentially above 175$^{\circ}C$ in air. The specimens showed a steady increase in weight at 175$^{\circ}C$ but did constant weight followed by rapid increase in specimen weight at the beginning above 20$0^{\circ}C$. Oxidation of the milled powder mixture was significantly suppressed by vacuum annealing at 30$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 h. Suppression of oxidation by vacuum annealing and different oxidation behaviors of the milled powder mixture between 175$^{\circ}C$ and 20$0^{\circ}C$, were attributed to removal of strain energy stored in the cobalt powder during vacuum annealing or oxidation treatment above 20$0^{\circ}C$. The role of stored strain energy on oxidation of milled WC-15%Co powder mixture was proved by X-ray diffraction method and differential thermal analysis.

  • The application of conifer leave to the papermaking process as a functional organic filler was investigated in this study. The powder of the conifer leave after hot water extraction for the functional extract, such as phytoncide, was applied to OCC stock. The comparison between the commercial wood flour and the conifer leave powder as organic filler for OCC paper were conducted with various wet pressing conditions. The amount of the water removal by the wet pressing process and the bulk of handsheet were increased by the addition of the wood flour and the conifer leave powder, although the tensile strength was decreased. At the higher pressure condition of the wet pressing, the wet pressing efficiency was greatly increased by the wood flour and the conifer leave powder. There was a little difference in the performance of the wood flour and the conifer leave powder as an organic filler. Those results showed the conifer leave powder could be an alternative resource to the wood powder for papermaking organic filler.
