Indium tin oxide (ITO) coatings were made using an ITO slurry and an ITO sol. This was achieved by dispersing nanosized ITO powder in a mixed solvent without any dispersant and developing an adhesive ITO sol from indium acetate and tin tetrachloride in a mixture of DMF and n-butanol. Coating was carried out in one step by spin coating an ITO slurry, which was then followed by an ITO sol over it. Here, the sol penetrates into the nano ITO particle layers to make them adhere to each other as well as to a glass substrate. This is then followed by sintering at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h to produce a uniform film consisting of ITO particles of about 50 nm and 10 nm. ITO films were obtained with sheet resistances from 450 to 1500 ohm/${\Box}$ by varying spin speed and concentration. Transmittance is higher than 90% at 550 nm.
Surface composite layers of 1.9~2.9 mm in thickness were fabricated by depositing metamorphic powders on a carbon steel substrate and by irradiating with a high-energy electron beam. In the surface composite layers, 48~64 vol.% of $Cr_{2}B$ or $Cr_{1.65}Fe_{0.35}B_{0.96}$ borides were densely precipitated in the austenite or martensite matrix. These hard borides improved the hardness of the surface composite layer. According to the otentiodynamic polarization test results of the surface composites, coatings, STS304 stainless steel, and carbon steel substrate, the corrosion potential of the surface composite fabricated with 'C+' powders was highest, and its corrosion current density was lowest, while its pitting potential was similar to that of the STS304 steel. This indicated that the overall corrosion resistance of the surface composite fabricated with 'C+' powders was the best among the tested materials. Austenite and martensite phases of the surface composites and coatings was selectively corroded, while borides were retained inside pits. In the coating fabricated with 'C+' powders, the localized corrosion additionally occurred along splat boundaries, and thus the corrosion resistance of the coating was worse than that of the surface composite.
PZT(80/20) powder was prepared by a sol-gel method and PZT thick films were fabricated by the screen-printing method on the alumina substrates. The coating and drying procedure was repeated 4 times. And then the PZT(20/80) precursor solution was spin-coated on the multilayered thick films. A concentration of a coating solution was 0.5 mol/L and the number of coating was repeated from 0 to 6. The porosity of the thick films was decreased with increasing the number of coatings and the PZT thick films with 6-times coated showed the dense microstructure and thickness of about 60-65 ${\mu}m$. All PZT thick films showed the typical XRD patterns of a typical perovskite polycrystalline structure. The relative dielectric constant and the dielectric loss of the PZT-6 thick film were 275 and 3.5, respectively. And the PZT-6 film shows the remanent polarization of 22.1 $C/cm^2$ and coercive field of 13.7 kV/cm.
The electrochemical corrosion behaviors of 304 stainless steels (STSs) with various coatings (organic coating and dry coating) were examined, and their applicability as bipolar plates in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) was validated. The results showed that the organic-coated samples had a significant decrease in anodic and cathodic current density compared to the uncoated sample. However, an increase in carbon black content in the organic coating or additional heat treatment at 700 ℃ resulted in a decrease in corrosion resistance. In addition, improvements in corrosion resistance achieved by adding TiO2 powder to the organic coating were found to be limited. In contrast, dry coating with TiC and CrC exhibited higher corrosion potential, significantly lower current density, and reduced contact resistance compared to the organic coatings. Notably, the TiC-coated sample showed a comparatively lower current density and more stable behavior than the CrC-coated sample. Based on a series of experimental results, a thin TiC coating without defects is proposed as a promising surface treatment strategy for STS bipolar plates in PEMFC.
Electrodeposition technology is widely used in industry for various kinds of coatings. Modifications in this technology led to several processes to meet various requirements. Electrolysis in ionic liquids has many advantages such as low energy consumption of energy, low pollutant emission and low operating costs. Although ionic liquids have already been used in liquid/liquid extraction processes, only recently their use in electrodeposition was exploited. Electrochemical deposition of composites is an expanding area. Coupled with the progress in the synthesis of nanometric powder, this research will open a large number of innovative materials. Pulse current plating is another electrodeposition technique which yields improved coatings. Although electrodeposition is now regarded as an environmental non-friendly process, it is economically viable and has many inherent advantages. For certain applications, alternatives to electrodeposition have not yet been fully implemented. Hence, continued research in this technology is warranted. This article reviews some recent advances in electrodeposition technology. Aspects of electrodeposition such as electrolysis in ionic liquids, electrodeposition of composites, pulse current plating techniques, metal and alloy deposition, compound deposition and effects of additives are discussed in this review.

Gadolinium zirconate, $Gd_2Zr_2O_7$, is one of the most versatile oxides among the new thermal-barrier-coating (TBC) materials for replacing conventional yttira-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). $Gd_2Zr_2O_7$ exhibits excellent properties, such as low thermal conductivity, high thermal expansion coefficient comparable with that of YSZ, and chemical stability at high temperature. In this study, bulk and coating specimens with $Gd_{2-x}Zr_{2+x}O_{7+0.5x}$ (x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0) compositions were fabricated in order to examine the characteristics of this gadolinium zirconate system with different Gd content for TBC applications. Especially, coatings with $Gd_{2-x}Zr_{2+x}O_{7+0.5x}$ (x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0) compositions were produced by suspension plasma spray (SPS) with suspension of raw powder mixtures prepared by planetary milling followed by ball milling. Phase formation, microstructure, and thermal diffusivity were characterized for both sintered and coated specimens. Single phase materials with pyrochlore or fluorite were fabricated by normal sintering as well as SPS coating. In particular, coated specimens showed vertically-separated columnar microstructures with thickness of $400{\sim}600{\mu}m$.
Cu based amorphous ($Cu_{54}Zr_{22}Ti_{18}Ni_{6}$) powders were deposited onto Al 6061 substrates by cold spray process with different powder preheating temperatures (below glass transition temperature: $350^{\circ}C$, near glass transition temperature: $430^{\circ}C$ and near crystallization temperature: $500^{\circ}C$). The microstructure and macroscopic properties (hardness, wear and corrosion) of Cu based amorphous coating layers were also investigated. X-ray diffraction results showed that cold sprayed Cu based amorphous coating layers of $300{\sim}350{\mu}m$ thickness could be well manufactured regardless of powder preheating temperature. Porosity measurements revealed that the coating layers of $430^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$ preheating temperature conditions had lower porosity contents (0.88%, 0.93%) than that of the $350^{\circ}C$ preheating condition (4.87%). Hardness was measured as 374.8 Hv ($350^{\circ}C$), 436.3 Hv ($430^{\circ}C$) and 455.4 Hv ($500^{\circ}C$) for the Cu based amorphous coating layers, respectively. The results of the suga test for the wear resistance property also corresponded well to the hardness results. The critical anodic current density ($i_{c}$) according to powder preheating temperature conditions of $430^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$ was lower than that of the sample preheated at $350^{\circ}C$, respectively. The higher hardness, wear and corrosion resistances of the preheating conditions of near $T_{g}$ and $T_{x}$, compared to the properties of below $T_{g}$, could be well explained by the lower porosity of coating layer.
Micron size Co-alloy(T800) powder was coated on Inconel 718 by HVOF thermal spraying for the studies of the improvement of durability of high speed spindle by using Taguchi program for the parameters of spray distance, flow rates of hydrogen and oxygen and powder feed rate. The optimal coating process was determined by the studies of coating properties such as micro-structure, porosity, surface roughness and micro hardness. Friction and wear behaviors of coatings were investigated by sliding wear test at room temperature and $1000^{\circ}F(538^{\circ}C)$. At both room temperature and $538^{\circ}C$ the sliding wear debris and friction coefficients of the coating were drastically reduced compared with the surface of non-coated parent material. This shows that Co-alloy powder coating is highly recommendable for the durability improvement surface coating of high speed air-bearing spindle. At high temperature wear traces and friction coefficients of both coating and non-coating were drastically reduced compared with those of room temperature since the brittle oxides were formed easily on the surface, and the brittle oxide phases were attrited by the reciprocating sliding wear according to the complicated mixed wear mechanisms These oxide particles, partially melts and the melts play role as lubricant and reduce the wear and friction coefficient. This also shows that Co-alloy powder coating is highly recommendable far the durability improvement surface coating on the surface vulnerable to frictional heat such as high speed spindles.
Ceramic based nanocomposite, in which nano-sized ceramics and metals were dispersed within matrix grains and/or at grain boundaries, were successfully fabricated in the ceramic/cerarnic and ceramic/metal composite systems such as $Al_2O_3$/SiC, $Al_2O_3$/$Si_3N_4$, MgO/SiC, mullite/SiC, $Si_3N_4/SiC, $Si_3N_4$/B, $Al_2O_3$/W, $Al_2O_3$/Mo, $Al_2O_3$/Ni and $ZrO_2$/Mo systems. In these systems, the ceramiclceramic composites were fabricated from homogeneously mixed powders, powders with thin coatings of the second phases and amorphous precursor composite powders by usual powder metallurgical methods. The ceramiclmetal nanocomposites were prepared by combination of H2 reduction of metal oxides in the early stage of sinterings and usual powder metallurgical processes. The transmission electron microscopic observation for the $Al_2O_3$/SiC nanocomposite indicated that the second phases less than 70nm were mainly located within matrix grains and the larger particles were dispersed at the grain boundaries. The similar observation was also identified for other cerarnic/ceramic and ceramiclmetal nanocornposites. The striking findings in these nanocomposites were that mechanical properties were significantly improved by the nano-sized dispersion from 5 to 10 vol% even at high temperatures. For example, the improvement in hcture strength by 2 to 5 times and in creep resistance by 2 to 4 orders was observed not only for the ceramidceramic nanocomposites but also for the ceramiclmetal nanocomposites with only 5~01%se cond phase. The newly developed silicon nitride/boron nitride nanocomposites, in which nano-sized hexagonal BN particulates with low Young's modulus and fracture strength were dispersed mainly within matrix grains, gave also the strong improvement in fracture strength and thermal shock fracture resistance. In presentation, the process-rnicro/nanostructure-properties relationship will be presented in detail. The special emphasis will be placed on the understanding of the roles of nano-sized dispersions on mechanical properties.
Graphite-Ni composite powders were synthesized by mechanical alloying(MA) and spray drying(SD). Fabricated powders as well as commercial graphite-Ni powders were thermally sprayed on mild steel substrates using high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spray process and flame thermal spray process. The effects of several process parameters on related properties in thermally sprayed coatings have been investigated and correlated with microstructures in this study. The results indicated that the desired properties can be obtained when commercial powders were applied using HVOF process, while coating properties in case of MA powder application were inferior to those in HVOF process in so far. However, it is suggested that property enhancement can be obtained if the fraction of hexagonal graphite phase can be increased in mechanically alloyed powders.
