  • A complete potential profile of an electrical double layer is calculated from a distribution function of charged particles based upon a model where the effect of a charged electrode and the finite size of ion are explicitly included. Electrons which are distributed on the electrode surface are assumed not to penetrate the electrode/electrolyte boundary. Formation of the constant density regions and their effects on potential and the electrical double layer capacitances are studied in great detail. The distribution of surface electrons as well as the constant density regions are found to be essential in characterizing the electrical double layer. The introduction of the ion size into the prior electrical double layer model of an ideally polarizable electrode/point charged electrolyte system, shows a great improvement in its characteristics mostly at negative potential region.

  • The potential induced degradation (PID) phenomenon of crystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) modules has been often found in outdoor PV systems until recently since firstly reported in 2010. Many studies have been conducted about the mechanism and the preventive methods, but systematic diagnosis of the PID has not been applied on-site. This paper focuses on analysis of 5 categories and 10 PID diagnosis methods using the monitoring data, light current-voltage, dark current-voltage, infrared and electroluminescence. We expect to contribute to improvement of power generation through PID diagnosis and troubleshooting in PV plants.

  • Argo drifters provide information of the vertical structure in the water column and have a potential for the improvement of understanding phytoplankton primary production and biogeochemical cycles in combination with ocean color satellite data, which can obtain the horizontal distribution of phytoplankton biomass in the surface layer. Our examples show that using Argo drifters with satellite-measured horizontal distribution of phytoplankton biomass at the sea surface allow an improved understanding of the development of the spring bloom. The other possible uses of Argo drifter are discussed.

  • We present a high-order potential ow model for the motion of the impulsively accelerated unstable interface of infinite density jump. The Layzer model for the evolution of the interface is extended to high-order. The time-evolution solutions of the bubble and the spike in the interface are obtained from the high-order model. We show that the high-order model gives improvement on the prediction of the evolution of the bubble and the spike.

  • A Potential acid sulfate soil derived from continental Holocene deposits on the fan-base was found and it was characterized with improvement practices. Artesian wells were scattered in the area, and the imperfectly drained soils were featured by having fine loamy with 7~30% of gravels. The potential acid sulfate soil layers were typified by having darkness in color with around 3.3~3.8% of O.M. and 0.34~0.41% of total sulfur. Soil pH ranged from 3.4 to 3.8 but it was decreased to 1.9~2.5 after oxidation with $H_2O_2$. Ground water sprang out from an artesian well contained a high amount of minerals such as Na, Ca, Mg, K, etc. and about 80ppm of sulfate which seemed to be responsible for pyrite formation. The soil was classified to member of "Fine loamy, mixed, acid, mesic, sulfic Haplaquepts" in taxonomically, and "weak potential acid sulfate soils" in interpretatively. The installation of tile drains with adding fine earth and liming were effective. However, the pH goes down to 4.8 again after 3 years of improvement practices.

  • Biodiversity is a key element of ecosystem of which function provides essential product and service in human life. In the course since development projects often causes damages to biodiversity, environmental impact assessment technique must be capable of accurately assessing potential impact from flora and fauna and to entire ecosystem. Korea needs improvement of its assessment technique that is compatible with Korean environmental regulatory standard that is generally stricter than that of most countries. This study attempts to explore both domestic and overseas biodiversity assessment techniques and analyze each stage of environmental impact assessment. The data is collected from numbers of literatures selected by navigating both domestic and overseas literature database with certain keywords. Among the 44 selected papers, overseas publications outnumber those of domestics, and there are more researches on assessment methodology of biodiversity than assessment tool and model. In terms of environmental impact assessment, the number of papers on environmental impact forecast exceeds the numbers of papers on current state of environment and the impact minimizing solution. Therefore, contents and trends of those researches in the different stages of environmental impact assessment discussed in this paper not only suggest potential impact on biodiversity and minimization solutions in detail, but is also a valuable resource particularly for biodiversity relevant environmental assessment technique improvement in Korea. Proposing of a new direction of improvement in biodiversity assessment techniques makes this study significant, and further research for preservation of biodiversity should follow up to provide an improvement scheme for biodiversity assessment techniques in the future.

  • The occurrence of algae caused by eutrophication of fresh water is a pollution source to destroy the aquatic environment. When the high voltage electric field is applied in the water, When a high voltage is applied to the electric field in the water, the algae can be broken the balance of cell membranes, and is dead. In this paper, we develop a water quality improvement system for generating an electric field having a higher energy than the zeta potential when a high voltage is applied to 4,000V. To ensure the mobility of the water quality improvement system, we designed the PV generation system using the optimal size technique that is based on the model of power lack ratio. By evaluating the output characteristics of the water quality improvement system, power generation characteristics of the PV generation system, and battery charging characteristics, we can show that the proposed system can be applicable to the water quality improvement system inhibiting the growth rate of the algae in the fresh water.

  • This study aims to improve the Korean Farmers' Occupational Disease and Injury Survey (KFODIS), using the questionnaire improvement model, and systematic appraisal tools. The questionnaire improvement model comprises three stages: pretesting, redesign, and field-testing. The survey was evaluated by 13 expert reviewers, using a modified version of the Questionnaire Appraisal System (QAS-99). Based on the results of pretesting, survey questions were modified at a group meeting of experts. To identify potential issues with the improved survey questions, data were collected from 20 interviews and 31 respondents before behavior coding analysis was conducted. The questionnaire improvement model and systematic appraisal tools were useful in identifying, evaluating, and correcting miscommunication and other similar issues in the KFODIS.

  • The present paper addresses the nonlinear response of a FG square plate with two smart layers as a sensor and actuator under pressure. Geometric nonlinearity was considered in the strain-displacement relation based on the Von-Karman assumption. All the mechanical and electrical properties except Poisson's ratio can vary continuously along the thickness of the plate based on a power function. Electric potential was assumed as a quadratic function along the thickness direction and trigonometric function along the planar coordinate. By evaluating the mechanical and electrical energy, the total energy equation can be minimized with respect to amplitude of displacements and electrical potential. The effect of non homogenous index was investigated on the responses of the system. Obtained results indicate that with increasing the non homogenous index, the displacements and electric potential tend to an asymptotic value. Displacements and electric potential can be presented in terms of planar coordinate system. A linear analysis was employed and then the achieved results are compared with those results that are obtained using the nonlinear analysis. The effect of the geometric nonlinearity is investigated by using the comparison between the linear and nonlinear results. Displacement-load and potential-load curves verified the necessity of a nonlinear analysis rather than a linear analysis. Improvement of the previous results (by the linear analysis) through employing a nonlinear analysis can be presented as novelty of this study.
