  • Much oyster shell is breeding by character and conduct of oyster-industry for a long time among them. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the recycling possibility of waste oyster shells, which induce environmental pollutions by piling up out at the open or the temporary reclamation. The purpose of this study is to develope eco-friendly binder using waste oyster shells, and to reinforce soils fur soft soil improvement. In this paper, a series of laboratory tests including compressive pot tests were performed to evaluate characteristics of soils treated by developed waste oyster shells with different water content of soils. Based on test results, eco-friendly Supporter manufactured from waste oyster shells were estimated as good resource materials for soft soil improvements. We got the conclusion by a series of experiment, It is verified that change of pH of soil is improved by mixing with oyster shells. The homogenization method for deducing apparent of oyster shells, which can consider micro-structure of mixed soil, is introduced. The improvement treatment leaded to enlarge fluctuation of soil moisture content. The effect of calcium concentration was good though improvement treatment of physical property. In addition, the crop yield in amelioration plots increased. It means that the increase of crop yield was caused by improvement of soil physical properties rather than improvement of calcium concentration.

  • A simple and efficient protocol was developed for culturing Cu-tolerant and Cu-accumulating plants via pre-adaptation to Cu during plant tissue culture. We induced multiple shoots from begonia (Begonia evansiana Andr.) leaf explants on MS medium supplemented with naphtaieneacetic acid and benzyladenine. After 3 months, small plantlets were transferred to MS medium supplemented with $100{\mu}M\;CuCl_2$ for pre-adaptation to Cu and cultured for 5 months. Then, these plantlets were individually planted in pots containing artificial soil. An additional 500 mg of Cu dissolved in 1/4 strength MS solution was applied to each pot during irrigation over the course of 2 months. We planted pre-adapted and control begonias in soil from the II-Kwang Mine, an abandoned Cu mine in Pusan, Korea, to examine their ability to tolerate and accumulate Cu for phytore-mediation. Pre-adapted begonias accumulated $1,200{\mu}g$ Cu/g dry root tissue over the course of 45 days. On the other hand, non-Cu-adapted controls accumulated only $85{\mu}g$ Cu/g dry root tissue. To enhance Cu extraction, chelating agents, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA)-dipotassiun and pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDA), were applied. While the chelating agents did not enhance accumulation of Cu in the roots of control begonias, EDTA application increased the level of Cu in the roots of pre-adapted begonias twofold (to $2,500{\mu}g$ Cu/g dry root tissue). Because pre-adapted begonias accumulated a large amount of Cu, mainly in their roots, they could be used for phytostabilization of Cu-contaminated soils. In addition, as a flowering plant, begonias can be used to create aesthetically pleasing remediation sites.

  • This study examined variation in Cd and Pb uptake among different medi cinal plants grown under the same soil environment together with immobilizing effect of lime to decrease these metals accumulation by the medicinal plants. For this, lime was incorporated into a heavy metal-contaminated soil at 1% followed by cultivation of seven different annual and 5 different biennial medicinal plants. In order for comparison, control soil without lime treatment was included and all the pot trials were carried out four replicates. Cadmium and Pb concentrations in medicinal plant roots grown in the control soil varied between 0.5 and $2.8mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Cd and 3.2 and $82.4mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Pb. The highest accumulation occurred in C. officinale and the lowest in D. batatas. Lime application decreased average Cd and Pb concentrations in the examined medicinal plants from $1.3mg\;kg^{-1}$ and $25.7mg\;kg^{-1}$ to $0.6mg\;kg^{-1}$ and $11.9mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively in comparison with those grown in the control soil.

  • To prepare acrylic type pressure-sensitive adhesive, quarter polymers were synthesized from butylacrylate (BA), 2-ethylhexylacrylate (2-EHA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (2-HEMA). The quarter polymer was identified by FT-IR. Molecular weight was measured by Gel Pearmeation Chromatograhy. Also, viscosity, solid content and peel strength were investigated. The peel strength was $160g_f/25mm$ when the volume ratio of feed monomer to solvent was 1.3:1 and the ratio was relevant to commercial usage. The pot life of adhesive was 30 s at the 50 m/min of heat treatment rate, and it indicated that the minimum drying time was 30 s. Not only weathering resistance keep up peel strength $160{\sim}180g_f/25mm$ after 1000 h, but also no residual remains.

  • An excess application of N fertilizer causes physiological and morphological disorder known as ammonium ($NH_4{^+}$) toxicity in Chinese cabbage and it has been to be an issue for appropriate N fertilizer management. Hence, the pot experiment was conducted in order to evaluate the alleviating effect of the application of the easily decomposable carbohydrate on $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity in Chinese cabbage. Four levels of urea at 0, 160, 320, and $640kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$, represented as T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively, were applied. In order to evaluate the alleviating effect of the application of the easily decomposable carbohydrate (sucrose) at T3 and T4 where $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity had occurred, five levels of sucrose were applied to meet C/N ratios of 0, 2, 4, 6, and 10, respectively. Our results showed that the $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity was observed at T3 and T4 at 5 days after treatment (DAT). $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity contributed to decrease fresh weight, length of leaves, length of root, and number of leaves significantly (p<0.05). The application of sucrose as a source of mitigating $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity had a good performance at T3 with the alleviating effect as 73 % and reduced in $NH_4{^+}-N$ content in soil at 29 DAT. In the maximum N rate of T4, however, sucrose application recovered it as 32 % only compared to T2 even though the same C/N ratio was treated. Consequently, sucrose as the easily decomposable carbohydrate played crucial role to reduce $NH_4{^+}$ concentration in soil and finally alleviated $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity in plant.

  • As the global warming causing desertification increase, there is growing concern about damage of crops. It was to investigate how the treatment with hydrogen peroxide before leaf development affects the growth and yield of sorghum for minimizing a damage of crops to drought. The germination experiment was conducted at alternating temperature of $25^{\circ}C/20^{\circ}C$(12 hr/12 hr) under water stress condition of 0 ~ -0.20 MPa adjusted with PEG solution containing 0 and 10 mM $H_2O_2$. In order to know the effect of foliar application of hydrogen peroxide on the growth of sorghum, 10 mM hydrogen peroxide was treated to leaves at 3-leaf stage of sorghum growing in greenhouse conditions. Seed germination rate was increased by 20% in hydrogen peroxide treatment as compared to the Control. under water stress conditions (-0.15 ~ -0.20 MPa). The length of seedlings was also on the rise by the hydrogen peroxide treatment. In the greenhouse pot experiment, the morphological characteristics (plant height, stem diameter, leaf length, and leaf number) and physiological characteristics (chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), stomatal conductance) were higher in the plants treated with hydrogen peroxide under the drought stress condition than those of plants of $H_2O$ treatment. Experiment conducted with the soil moisture gradient system showed that the foliar application of hydrogen peroxide increased photosynthetic ability of sorghum plant with respect to SPAD value and stomatal conductance and rooting capacity (root weight and root length) under drought condition. Generally, hydrogen peroxide treatment in sorghum increased the tolerance to drought stress and maintained better growth due to ameliorating oxidative stress.

  • In a pot experiment, we studied the effect of nitrification inhibition on Fe reduction and P release in paddy soil and growth and nutrient uptake of rice plant. Recommended level of fertilizers, 6 kg N, 5 kg $P_2O_5$ and 4 kg $K_2O$ per 10a, were applied, and for N fertilizer urea, urea+N-serve, and $KNO_3$ were included. Four 30-day-old seedlings were transplanted in a waterlogged 9 L pot filled with Yuga series soil, and 3 pots were prepared in each N fertilizer treatment. Changes of soil redox potential and concentration of ${NH_4}^-$, ${NO_3}^-$, $Fe^{2+}$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ in soil solution at 10 cm depth were monitored, and also the growth and nutrient uptake of rice plants were measured. Concentration of ${NH_4}^+$ in soil solution was highest in urea+N-serve treatment, and followed by urea and $KNO_3$ treatments. Addition of N-serve could effectively inhibit nitrification in the soil. In the treatment of $KNO_3$, relatively higher ${NO_3}^-$ concentration was found at 10 cm depth soil. In urea+N-serve treatment redox potential was lower than -100 mV during the experiment, but in the treatment of $KNO_3$ the potential was maintained above 0 mV until ${NO_3}^-$ remaining in soil solution. Reduction of Fe(III) and solubilization of P were highly correlated with redox potential changes in the three N fertilizer treatments. Concentrations of Fe(II) and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ in soil solution at 10 cm depth were much higher in the urea+N-serve treatment. The most vigorous rice seedling growth was found in the urea treatment. Although the availability of N and P in soil was enhanced in the urea+N-serve treatment through the suppression of nitrification, excessive solubilization of Fe could limit the growth of rice plants.

  • There is a growing interest in rice cultivation on farms with irrigation facilities in desert climates. We investigated the growth characteristics and yields of two rice cultivars (FL478 and Asemi) irrigated at field capacities (FCs) of 80%, 100%, and 120% in a lysimeter with coarse sandy soils. The results showed that at the heading stage, the FC 100% treatment had the highest plant height and number of tillers between the two cultivars. At the harvest period, the culm and panicle lengths of both cultivars at FC 100% were similar to those of the control. In contrast, the number of panicles, grain number per panicle, and percentage of ripened grains were the highest in the control. Moreover, FL478 and Asemi had the highest grain yields of 1.40 and 2.20 kg·pot-1 in the control, respectively. For both cultivars, the grain yields of the FC 100% and FC 120% treatments were approximately 70% of the control. In comparison, FL478 and Asemi had the highest water productivity of 0.45 and 0.63 kg·m3-1 for the FC 80% treatment, followed by the FC 100% treatment (0.42 and 0.59 kg·m3-1, respectively), which was nearly 14.3% and 20.3% higher than that of the control. Therefore, we found that irrigation at FC 100% is anticipated to be effective in managing surface drip irrigation for rice cultivation in desert climates in arid environments, while maintaining rice yields.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the optimum electrical conductivity (EC) levels of nutrient solution for growth of mother plants and increasing occurrence of daughter plants of strawberry ($Fragaria{\times}ananassa$ Duch. cv. Maehyang) using hydroponics. The mother plants of strawberry were transplanted in cultivation pot ($61{\times}27{\times}18cm$) filled with coir medium on March 22, 2017. Nutrient solution was supplied by the drip tape at $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ of EC levels for rooting during 11 days. After rooting, the mother plants of strawberry was treated at the EC levels of 0.6, 1.2 or $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, respectively. Growth characteristics, such as mother plants and daughter plants of strawberry were measured at 100 days after transplanting. The plant height of mother plant was significantly higher at $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatment, and the crown diameter of mother plant was significantly greater at $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatment. The fresh and dry weights of shoot were higher at both 0.6 and, $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatments. The number of runners was not significantly different in all treatments. The fresh and dry weights of runner were heavier at $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ than other treatments. The number of daughter plants was the highest, 16.7 at the $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatment. However, the fresh and dry weights of third daughter plant were the heaviest at $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatment. Although the daughter plants were a large of production at $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatment, the low EC levels of strawberry were positive in terms of seedling quality during nursery. These results indicated that growth of mother plant and occurrence of daughter plants were greater at the EC $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ nutrient solution for hydroponic cultivation of 'Maehyang' strawberry during nursery period.
