  • Purpose: In the theory of traditional medicine, Scutellariae Radix (SR) can clear away heat and remove dampness, purge the sthenic fire and remove toxic materials, cool blood and stop bleeding to prevent miscarriage. Recently, SR is known to have anti-cancer activity. For this reason, the present author designed to investigate the effect of SR on proliferation rates of cervical cancer cell line, then effects on genetic profile by SR. Methods: The genetic profile for the effect of SR on human derived cervical cancer cell line, SNU-703, was measured using microarray technique, and the functional analysis on these genes was conducted. Results: Total 519 genes were up-regulated and 606 genes down-regulated in cells treated with SR. Genes induced or suppressed by SR were all mainly concerned with metabolic process, regulation of biological process and protein binding. The network of total protein interactions was measured using cytoscape program, and some key molecules, such as TNFRSF1A, AKT1, MAPK3, and STAT3 that can be used for elucidation of therapeutical mechanism of medicine in future were identified. Conclusion: These results suggest possibility of SR as anti-cancer drug and also suggest that related mechanisms are involved in TNFRSF1A, AKT1, MAPK3, and STAT3 related signalling pathways.

  • Objective: To report an unsuspected adaptive plasticity of single upper motor neurons and of primary motor cortex found after microsurgical connection of the spinal cord with peripheral nerve via grafts in paraplegics and focussed discussion of the reviewed literature. Methods: The research aimed at making paraplegics walk again, after 20 years of experimental surgery in animals. Amongst other things, animal experiments demonstrated the alteration of the motor endplates receptors from cholinergic to glutamatergic induced by connection with upper motor neurons. The same paradigm was successfully performed in paraplegic humans. The nerve grafts were put into the ventral-lateral spinal tract randomly, with out possibility of choosing the axons coming from different areas of the motor cortex. Results: The patient became able to selectively activate the re-innervated muscles she wanted without concurrent activities of other muscles connected with the same cortical areas. Conclusion: Authors believe that unlike in nerve or tendon transfers, where the whole cortical area corresponding to the transfer changes its function a phenomenon that we call "brain plasticity by areas". in our paradigm due to the direct connection of upper motor neurons with different peripheral nerves and muscles via nerve grafts motor learning occurs based on adaptive neuronal plasticity so that simultaneous contractions of other muscles are prevented. We propose to call it adaptive functional "plasticity by single neurons". We speculate that this phenomenon is due to the simultaneous activation of neurons spread in different cortical areas for a given specific movement, whilst the other neurons of the same areas connected with peripheral nerves of different muscles are not activated at the same time. Why different neurons of the same area fire at different times according to different voluntary demands remains to be discovered. We are committed to solve this enigma hereafter.

  • The Chongok karst cave which is located in Donghae-city, has high tourist and educational value due to existence of many doline(sink hole). Whereas this cave is easy to approach for the tourists, because this cave is located near the downtown, a high environmental riskiness such as sewage flowing has been also involved. In study, we observed the variation of water quality with long-term monitoring and investigated the possibility of existence of impact factor to water eco-system and determined the proper long-term monitoring factor among many monitoring criteria. The groundwater quality was maintained in the range of about $14^{\circ}C$ in temperature, over 10mg/l in dissolved oxygen and 7-8 in pH, so the impact factor in water eco-system was not observed. The guide line to make sure of tourist safety was determined to 60mm/d as daily rainfall. The conductivity was suggested to main factor for long-term monitoring main factor and pH/turbidity was suitable for the supplementary factor. For the seasonal variation monitoring, ORP was recommended.

  • As the industry develops, the size of buildings and ships are getting bigger and more complicated. In such a complex space, emergency evacuation systems are required because of the possibility of casualties when an accident situation occurs. However, because present systems are composed of basic devices, such as alarms, emergency exit signs, and announcement regarding the situation and inform only the least information to evacuees, evacuees are not able to judge objectively. To solve these problems, various evacuation algorithms have been proposed. However, these studies aim to search evacuation routes based on specific risk factors or to model the effects of bottlenecks in evacuation situations. Therefore, there is a limit to apply to real systems. Therefore, we propose algorithms to search the optimal evacuation route considering various risk factors such as fire and bottleneck in evacuation situations and to be applicable in actual situation in this paper. Performance evaluation using computer simulations showed that the proposed scheme is effective.

  • This study focused on the focus group interview based on the questionnaire. Prior to the interview, we used questionnaires from the previous researchers in order to select the questionnaires and interviews of the focus group. In order to measure the possibility, which is the expression characteristic of the safety education app, the items related to cognitive, sensual, physical, and safety behaviors were used as constituent factors. And the safety education app to analyze was selected 'Water Go GO!' App developed by the National Emergency Management Agency. The results of this study are as follows: First, the learner should help to participate in learning continuously in order to make meaningful learning activities in safety education app learning environment. Second, learners must interact with mobile devices in their apps to facilitate learning while reducing the number of factors that can interfere with learners' learning. This study is meaningful in that it can utilize this design principle as a guideline for enhancing safety behaviors.

  • Korean domestic workers are trend to avoid harmful and dangerous jobs calls 3D work due to the poor working conditions. Therefore, the incoming population of foreign workers is increasing to fulfill the required labor force. Mostly these foreign workers are placed in small and medium-size industries. As work that induces musculoskeletal disorders(WMSD) is equally exposed to domestic workers as well as foreign workers, this study attempted to investigate the work burdened by musculoskeletal disorders and derive improvement measures by understanding the actual conditions of the worksites of foreign workers. The result of this investigation defines that the possibility of developing musculoskeletal disorders is very high in the environment in which more than 40% of the respondents work with heavy objects and repetitive work of wrists and elbows. To prevent the symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders among foreign workers, three measures were proposed. To reduce the mandatory check-up period of WMSD under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, to revise the employment permit system, and to enhance the practical help of EPS education. Safety and health management of foreign workers is becoming an essential task not only for securing a workforce but also for the national image. Personal and economic losses at the national level should be minimized through policy support such as financial support for small and medium-sized businesses in Korea and supplementation of legal systems for the protection of foreign workers.

  • LPG(Liquefied Petroluem Gas) Vehicles in metropolitan area being applied to improve air quality and have been proven effective for the reduction of air pollution. These gas stations are required to safe the storage tank because of possibility of causing huge loss of life and property. While storage tanks above ground have potential risk of explosion if fire breaks out and those under-ground are difficult to inspect due to poor accessibility neither above nor under-ground tank can serve us well. This study used the RPS-TRIZ (Rapidly Problem Solving-Teoriya Resheniya Izobretatelskikh Zadatch) technique and suggested the use of under-ground containment storage tank as a solution for safety issues and safety inspection.

  • Explosion and fires can occur in all segments of chemical and petroleum industries because of complexity of process, usage and storage of flammable and reactive chemicals, and operating conditions of high pressure and temperatures. Especially chemical plants have high possibility of the occurrence of BLEVE(Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion)and Fireball. In this study, a computer program was developed for the effect assessment of BLEVE and Fireball. BLEVE was analysed by three explosion models of physical explosion model, isothermal expansion model and adiabatic expansion model and Fireball using solid model. The parametric sensitivity analysis has been done for the models of BLEVE and Fireball. The damage by BLEVE and Fireball of Benzene and Toluene and m-Xylene were estimated.

  • Analysis of gas accidents for 11.5 years, from 1998 to June, 2009, by types has been made in this study to prevent the recurrence of accidents through the analysis of gas accident occurring environment. Gas using environment and gas accidents are forced to be closely connected since the number of gas accidents has not only been decreased but occurred steadily and gas using types are changing by time period, weather, etc. in terms of accident contents. Gas accidents have been occurred more in capital areas with larger gas usage and specific local governments. The possibility of the gas accidents hit the highest when the weather is clear, the wind speed is low and the humidity is in the middle. In addition, leakage of gas, fire or explosion are also considered to be closely related with the weather as a result of model observance of gas accidents types. All the gas related possible accidents are also considered to be predictable if this result is to be analysed in association with the weather.

  • There are many facilities, such as facilities for high pressure gas storage and systems related to high pressure pipes, to handle hazardous materials in energy industries. Because the foundation of the proper risk analysis and management system has not been established, there is the possibility of an accident and Korea has met higher accident rate than developed countries. These accidents in energy facilities could cause great damage to facilities including the surrounding area, We have conducted the present research in order to systematize the emergency response system (ERS) using a lot of information on the degree of damage in an accident by consequence analysis.
