  • The growth of Au films grown on a Si(100)-2x1 surface and Si films on a Ge(100)-2x1 substrate is studied using Positron-annihilation induced Auger Electron Spectroscopy(PAES), Electron induced Auger Electron Spectroscopy(EAES), and Low Energy Electron Diffraction(LEED). Previous work has shown that PAES is almost exclusively sensitive to the top-most atomic layer due to the trapping of positrons in an image potential well just outside the surface before annihilation. This surface specificity is exploited to profile the surface atomic concentrations during the growth of Au on Si(100) and Si on Ge(100) and EAES provides concentrations averaged over the top 3-10 atomic layers simultaneously. The difference in the probe-depth makes us possible to use PAES and EAES in a complementary fashion to estimate the surface and near surface concentration profiles. The results show that (i) the intermixing of Au and Si atoms occurs during the room temperature deposition, (ii) the segregated Ge layer is observed onto the Si layers deposited at 300k. In addition, the prior adsorption of hydrogen prevents the segregation of Ge on top of the deposited Si and that the hydrogen adsorption is useful in growing a thermally stable structure.

  • DBPAS has been used to characterize atomic size defect structures in materials. In this investigation the numerical analysis of the Doppler spectra was employed to the determination of the shape parameter, S, defined as the ratio between the amount of counts in a central portion of the spectrum and the total counts of whole spectrum. As the samples were exposed by X-ray increasing the exposed doses from 3, 6, and 9 Gy with 6 MV and 15 MV, respectively and also irradiated by X-ray as the medical applications used for in 0, 2, 4 and 6 years. The S-parameter values were increased as increasing the exposed time and the energies, that indicated the defects generate more. The S-parameters of the samples with medical treatment is varied from 0.4932 to 0.4956.

  • DBPAS has been used to characterize atomic level defect structures in materials. In this investigation the numerical analysis of the Doppler spectra was restricted to the determination of the shape parameter, S, defined as the ratio between the total amount of counts in a central portion of the spectrum and the total amount of counts. As samples were exposed by X-ray increasing from 3, 6, and 9 Gy with 6 MV, and 10 MV each and also by E-beam increasing the energies with 6 MeV, 9 MeV, 12 MeV, and 20 MeV. The S-parameter values were increased as increasing the exposed time and the energies. The S-parameters of the large and small size grains in $CaWO_4$ were measured. The S-parameter of the small size grains in $CaWO_4$ was resulted in larger values.

  • We show that thermal rearrangement of glassy polymers below the thermal degradation temperature can create unexpected and large microvoids in the membranes, leading to unexpected high gas permeability with high gas selectivity. These current polymer membranes display unexpected gas permeation-separation performance. There are above the upper-bound for conventional polymer membranes for several gas pairs. In the present study, molecular simulation, BET sorption, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), and gas separation experiments were performed to characterize the unusual structure-property relationship of these rigid glassy polymer membranes.

  • In the 1980s, techniques to image the human subjects in a three-dimensional direction were developed. Two major techniques are SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) and PET (Positron Emission Tomography) which allow the detector to detect a single photon or annihilation photons emitted from the subjects injected with radiopharmaceuticals. Since the latter two techniques can measure the density of receptors, enzymes and transporters in living human, it may be very important project to develop selective methods of labeling with radionuclides and to develop new radiopharmaceuticals. There has been a considerable interest in developing new compounds which specifically bind to dopamine and serotonin receptor and transporters, and it will be thus very useful to label those compounds with radionuclides in order to gain a better understanding in biochemical and pharmacological interactions in living human. This review mentions the characteristics of radioligands for the imaging of dopamine and serotonin receptors and transporters. Although significant progress has been achieved in the development of new PET and SPECT ligands for in vivo imaging of those receptors and transporters, there are continuous needs of new diagnostic radioligands.

  • free volume in polymers is defined as the difference of the specific volume and the volume which is not available for the particular molecular motion which is responsible or the process that is considered . Relations between free volume and viscosity free volume and diffusion coefficient are pre-sented both in the case of simple low molecular weight liquids and in the case of polymers. Molecular models and free volume models are reminded starting from the equilibrium state equation of Simha and Somcynski. The non equilibrium situations of specific volume of glass polymers below Tg are shown introducing different relaxation volume equations which involve different material's parameters and con-cept of the fictitious temperature. The diffusivity equations of Vrentas and Duda are introduced both for the glassy and rubbery states. The possibility of introducing time relaxation functions is also suggested. The importance of finding experimental evidences of the free volume is stressed. highlights of the free volume measurement methods are given in particular as to dilatometry photocromy fluorescence electron spin resonance small angle X-ray scattering positron annihilation spectroscopy.

  • A real-time digital time-stamp sorting algorithm used in the In-Beam positron emission tomography (In-Beam PET) is presented. The algorithm is operated in the field programmable gate array (FPGA) and a small amount of registers, MUX and memory cells are used. It is developed for sorting the data of annihilation event from front-end circuits, so as to identify the coincidence events efficiently in a large amount of data. In the In-Beam PET, each annihilation event is detected by the detector array and digitized by the analog to digital converter (ADC) in Data Acquisition Unit (DAQU), with a resolution of 14 bits and sampling rate of 50 MS/s. Test and preliminary operation have been implemented, it can perform a sorting operation under the event count rate up to 1 MHz per channel, and support four channels in total, count rate up to 4 MHz. The performance of this algorithm has been verified by pulse generator and 22Na radiation source, which can sort the events with chaotic order into chronological order completely. The application of this algorithm provides not only an efficient solution for selection of coincidence events, but also a design of electronic circuit with a small-scale structure.

  • The n-type and p-type silicon samples were exposed by 40.0, 3.98 MeV proton beams ranging between 0 to $20.0{\times}10^{13}protons/cm^2$. Coincidence Doppler Broadening Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy (CDBPAS) were applied to study of defect characteristics of p type and n type silicon samples. In this investigation the numerical analysis of the spectra was employed to the determination of the shape parameter, S, defined as the ratio between the amount of counts in a central portion of the gamma spectrum and the total counts of whole gamma spectrum. The S-parameter values strongly depend on the irradiated proton beam that indicated the defects generate more, rather than the energy intensity. 40 MeV irradiated proton beam in the n-type silicon at $20.0{\times}10^{13}protons/cm^2$ was larger defects than 3.98 MeV irradiated proton beam. It was analysis between the proton irradiation beams and the proton intensities of the irradiation. Because of the Bragg peak, SRIM results shows mainly in a certain depth of the sample to form the defect by the proton irradiation, rather than the defects to appear for the entire sample.

  • In the state of Positronium (Ps), which is an unstable material created by the temporary combination of electrons and positrons, the imaging technology through photo-conversion methodology is emerging as a new research theme under resonance conditions through terahertz electromagnetic waves. Normally, Positronium can be observed in the positron emission computed tomography (PET) process when an unstable, separate state that remains after the pair annihilation of an electron and a positron remains. In this study, terahertz (THz) waves and Cherenkov radiation (CR) are generated using the principle of ponderomotive force in the plasma wake-field acceleration, and electrons and positrons are simultaneously generated by using a relativistic electron beam without using a PET device. We confirm the possibility of Positronium photoconversion technology in terahertz electromagnetic resonance conditions through experimental studies that generate an unstable state. Here, a relativistic electron beam (REB) energy of 0.5 MeV (γ=2) was used, and the terahertz wave frequencies is G-band. Meanwhile, a THz wave mode converting three-stepped axicon lens was used to apply the photoconversion technology. Through this, light emission in the form of a luminescence-converted Bessel beam can be verified. In the future, it can be used complementarily with PET in nuclear medicine in the field of medical imaging.
