In this study, a carrier smoothed global positioning system / dead reckoning (CSGPS/DR) integrated system for high-precision trajectory estimation for the purpose of vehicle navigation was proposed. Existing code-based GPS has a low position accuracy, and carrier-phase differential global positioning system (CPDGPS) has a long waiting time for high-precision positioning and has a problem of high cost due to the establishment of infrastructure. To resolve this, the continuity of a trajectory was guaranteed by integrating CSGPS and DR. The results of the experiment indicated that the trajectory precision of the code-based GPS showed an error performance of more than 30cm, while that of the CSGPS/DR integrated system showed an error performance of less than 10cm. Based on this, it was found that the trajectory precision of the proposed CSGPS/DR integrated system is superior to that of the code-based GPS.
Visible light communication (VLC) using LED lamps is suitable for implementing an indoor positioning system in an indoor environment where the global positioning system (GPS) signal does not reach. In this paper, we present an indoor positioning system for mobile robots using a VLC beacon and fuzzy rules. This system consists of an autonomous mobile robot, VLC modules, and device application software. Fuzzy rules are applied to plan the global and local paths along which the mobile robot navigates indoors. The VLC transmitter modules are attached to the wall or the ceiling as beacons to transmit their own location information. The variable pulse position modulation (VPPM) algorithm is used to transmit data, which is a new modulation scheme for VLC providing a dimming control mechanism for flicker-free optical communication. The mobile robot has a receiver module to receive the location information while performing its mission in the environment where VLC transmitters are deployed.

The huge success of location-aware applications has called for the rapid development of an alternative positioning system to the global positioning system (GPS) for indoor localization based on existing technologies, such as 802.11 wireless networks. This paper proposes the Wireless MAC Processor Positioning System (WMPS), which is a localization system running on off-the-shelf 802.11 Access Points and based on the time-of-flight ranging of users' standard terminals. This paper proves through extensive experiments that the propagation delays can be measured with the accuracy required by indoor applications despite the different noise components that can affect the result: latencies of the hardware transreceivers, multipath, ACK jitters and timer quantization. Key to this solution is the choice of the Wireless MAC Processor architecture, which enables a straightforward implementation of the ranging subsystem directly inside the commercial cards without affecting the basic DCF channel access algorithm. In addition to the proposed measurement framework, this study developed a simple and effective localization algorithm that can work without requiring any preliminary calibration or device characterization. Finally, the architecture allows the measurement methodology to be adjusted as a function of the network load or propagation environments at the run time, without requiring any firmware update.
eLoran refers to a terrestrial navigation system using high-power low-frequency signals. Thus, it can be regarded as a positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) system to back up a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) or an alternative to GNSS. South Korea is vulnerable to interference such as GNSS jamming in particular. Therefore, South Korea has made an effort to develop an independent navigation system through eLoran system. More particularly, an eLoran testbed has been developed to be used in the northwest sea area and research on applicability of eLoran in South Korea has been underway. The present study analyzes expected performance of eLoran according to locations of newly built eLoran transmitting stations as part of the eLoran testbed research. The performance of eLoran is analyzed in terms of horizontal position accuracy, and horizontal dilution of precision (HDOP) information was used since it affects accuracy significantly. The target service areas of the eLoran testbed are Incheon and Pyeongtaek Ports, and the required target performance is positioning accuracy of 20 m position within 30 km coverage of the target service area.

In this paper, we propose a novel positioning system for indoor navigation which helps a user navigate easily to desired destinations in an unfamiliar indoor environment using his mobile phone. The system requires only the user's mobile phone with its basic equipped sensors such as a camera and a compass. The system tracks user's positions and orientations using a vision-based approach that utilizes $360^{\circ}$ panoramic images captured in the environment. To improve the robustness of the vision-based method, we exploit a digital compass that is widely installed on modern mobile phones. This hybrid solution outperforms existing mobile phone positioning methods by reducing the error of position estimation to around 0.7 meters. In addition, to enable the proposed system working independently on mobile phone without the requirement of additional hardware or external infrastructure, we employ a modified version of a fast and robust feature matching scheme using Histogrammed Intensity Patch. The experiments show that the proposed positioning system achieves good performance while running on a mobile phone with a responding time of around 1 second.
In this study, Inclined Geosynchronous Orbit (IGSO) and Geostationary Orbit (GEO) of BeiDou System (BDS) and Quasi Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) satellites positions and clock errors calculated by broadcast ephemeris and compared with Multi-GNSS Experiment (MGEX) products provided by five Analysis Centers (ACs). Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) calculated for satellite position error. The IGSO results showed that 1.82 m, 0.91 m, 1.28 m in BDS and 1.34 m 0.36 m 0.49 m in QZSS and the GEO results showed that 2.85 m, 6.34 m, 6.42 m in BDS and 0.47 m, 4.79 m, 5.82 m in QZSS in the direction of radial, along-track and cross-track respectively. RMS calculated for satellite clock error. The IGSO result showed that 2.08 ns and 1.24 ns and the GEO result showed that 1.28 ns and 1.12 ns in BDS and QZSS respectively.
A novel tri-mode ultraprecision positioning system for machine tools and measuring machine is proposed. The basic coarse mode uses a Twist-roller Friction Drive (abbr. TFD), and controls several tens of millimeters of the machine-table travel with nanometer order of positioning resolution. The fine mode also utilizes the TFD with a fine adjusting mechanism. The resolution of the fine mode is in the range of sub-nanometer. For realizing picometer positioning, the ultra-fine mode is executed by using an active aerostatic guideway. On the bearing surface of this active guideway, several Active Inherent Restrictors (abbr. AIRs) are embedded for controlling the table position. An AIR unit consists of a piezoelectric actuator having a through hole, one end of the hole on the bearing surface acts as an inherent restrictor. Owing to the aerostatic mechanism of the AIR, the deformation of the piezoelectric actuator in the AIR unit causes much reduced table displacement. Such motion reduction is effective for ultraprecision positioning. Current positioning resolution of the ultra-fine mode is 50pm, however the final goal of the positioning resolution is expected to be in the order of picometer.
This research investigates experimentally and numerically the tilting angle, eccentricity ratio, flying height of axial direction, friction torque, and critical mass of the HDD disk-spindle system due to HDD positioning angle. The tilting angle and the eccentricity ratio are the maximum when the HDD positioning angle is $90^{\circ}$ respect to horizontal position because the external force in radial direction and the torque applied to the rotating part are the maximum when the HDD positioning angle is $90^{\circ}$. The flying height increases with the increase of the HDD positioning angle because the direction of gravity applied to the rotating part changes. The friction torque increases with the increase of the HDD positioning angle until it becomes $60^{\circ}$, and decreases with the increase of the HDD positioning angle after it becomes $60^{\circ}$. The stability is the maximum when the HDD positioning angle is $90^{\circ}$.
