PVDF-TiO2 coated microfiltration membranes: preparation and characterization

  • Organic fouling and biofouling pose a significant challenge to the membrane filtration process. Photocatalysis-membrane hybrid system is a novel idea for reducing these membranes fouling however, when $TiO_2 photocatalyst nanoparticles are used in suspension, catalyst recovery is not only imposes an extra step on the process but also significantly contributes to increased membrane resistance and reduced permeate flux. In this study, $TiO_2$ photocatalyst has been immobilized by coating on the microfiltration (MF) membrane surface to minimize organic and microbial fouling. Nano-sized $TiO_2$ was first synthesized by a sol-gel method. The synthesized $TiO_2$ was coated on a Poly Vinyl Difluoride (PVDF) membrane (MF) surface using spray coating and dip coating techniques to obtain hybrid functional composite membrane. The characteristics of the synthesized photocatalyst and a functional composite membrane were studied using numerous instruments in terms of physical, chemical and electrical properties. In comparison to the clean PVDF membrane, the $TiO_2$ coated MF membrane was found more effective in removing methylene blue (20%) and E-coli (99%).

Extraction of Different Types of Geometrical Features from Raw Sensor Data of Two-dimensional LRF (2차원 LRF의 Raw Sensor Data로부터 추출된 다른 타입의 기하학적 특징)

  • This paper describes extraction methods of five different types of geometrical features (line, arc, corner, polynomial curve, NURBS curve) from the obtained raw data by using a two-dimensional laser range finder (LRF). Natural features with their covariance matrices play a key role in the realization of feature-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), which can be used to represent the environment and correct the pose of mobile robot. The covariance matrices of these geometrical features are derived in detail based on the raw sensor data and the uncertainty of LRF. Several comparison are made and discussed to highlight the advantages and drawbacks of each type of geometrical feature. Finally, the extracted features from raw sensor data obtained by using a LRF in an indoor environment are used to validate the proposed extraction methods.

A Comparison of Chromium and Copper-Containing Waterborne Wood Preservatives for Fixing and Leaching Characteristics (크롬-구리 화합물계(化合物系) 목재방부제(木材防腐劑)의 정착(定着) 및 용탈특성(溶脫特性) 비교(比較))

  • The rate of fixation of the components were evaluated in CCA-Type B and CCFZ-treated radiata pine sapwood by quantitative analysis of solution expressed from the treated wood. The leaching characteristics of radiata pine blocks treated with CCA-Type B and CCFZ were also evaluated by the AWPA standard leaching test. Both fixation and leaching charactersistics of CCA-Type B were compared with CCA-Type C treated wood samples. The rate of CCA-Type B fixation was a little faster than that of CCFZ. However, significant amounts of arsenic was unfixed in the CCA-Type B treated samples and consequently leached. These significant quantities of arsenic liberated from the CCA-Type B treated wood during service may pose some environmental concerns. Arsenic was no longer detectable from CCA-Type C treated samples when fixation was complete, even though the fixation of CCA-Type C was slower in some degree than CCA-Type B. In summary, it could be said that CCFZ was much safer preservative than CCA-Type B by the criterion based on the relative hazard assessed by absolute amount of unfixed element present in the treated wood. Also the decision that CCA preservative has to move from Type B to Type C should be made sooner or later for continuous use of CCA preservative in the future.

  • The historical separation between organization studies and architecture area created a design environment in which wort processes are evaluated separately from setting where they occur. The impact of separation has been parallel yet disconnected development in th two disciplines in which the advance in one arena have not precipitated advances in the other. This is the unfortunate loss as each discipline has the potential to contribute directly to the other. With the emergence of new economy the opportunity to realign the tow disciplines is once again presented as new ways of working have enhanced this opportunity. It is important to revisit the historical development of the tow disciplines and to discuss how the misalignment of their respective concerns contributed to the establishment of our current situation. What happened to create an environment in which organizations assume that one of their largest capital expenditures the cost of providing work spaces for employees is unrelated to their work process\ulcorner what recent developments offer opportunities to rectify this dilemma\ulcorner In this study it is presented a historical review of organization studies and architecture. Through examination of these areas across time it becomes quite apparent that it is now appropriate to pose new questions about organization and their architecture. The comparison of two parallel developments explains how the current design environment is separated from organization studies and offers compelling evidence for why it is important to revisit this separation in light of contemporary theories on collaborative work, organizational learning and communities of practice.

Extractable Heavy Metals in Phosphogypsum

  • In addition to supplying the essential elements, Ca and S, phosphogypsum can have profound effect on both the physical and chemical properties of certain soils. However, no widespread use of by-product phosphogypsum will be made unless such uses pose no threat to the public health and soil contamination. In this study, the extractability of As, Cd, Cu, and Pb with water and DTPA solution from phosphogypsum samples of pH 3, 5, and 7 were investigated to estimate the availability of those metals. Contents of water extractable metals in ohosphogypsum were less than 5 mg/kg for all the heavy metals investigated. The extractability of metals in DTPA solution was not quite different but a little higher in comparison to the water extraction. And the extractability was decreased as the pH of phosphogypsum increased. In the phosphogypsum of pH 7, amounts of water extractable metals were nearly zero. There was no significant difference in the amount of extractable metals during the extraction period of 5 weeks. The length of extraction time did not affect heavy metal extractability. Therefore there may be small fractions of easily soluble or extractable forms of metals in the phosphogypsum and most of the metals would be present in very insoluble forms. These results suggest that the application of phosphogypsum at appropriate rates on agricultural lands appears of no concern in terms of hazardous element contamination in soil.

  • Methods for the operative management of patent ductus arteriosus are now well established, and in the vast majority of children the circulatory shunt can be safely and effectively abolished by dividing the ductus or by closing it in continuity with ligatures and transfixing sutures. In adults, however, closure of patent ductus arteriosus may pose important technical problems, particularly when there are associated pulmonary hypertension, calcification, aneurysm and infective endocarditis. Under these circumstance, division or ligation is unusually hazardous because the diseased vessels often fracture or tear when sutures are placed in them. Then we closed the patent ductus arteriosus by use of cardiopulmonary bypass in 18 patients and ligated the ductus via thoracotomy in 18 patients from Jan. 1986 to May 1990. And we compared the results between two different methods. We concluded that ligation of ductus had a problem of rupture and transpulmonary internal suture closure of PDA had a problem of injury of recurrent laryngeal nerve.

Comparison of NPS Reduction at Yongsan Area Considering Spatio-Temporal Chnages in CN (CN의 시공간적 변화를 고려한 용산 물순환 환경도시계획의 비점오염물질 저감효과 비교)

  • Yongsan ward is located at central place connecting south and north ecology axis of seoul. Various environment-friendly Yongsan development could pose positive effects on NPS(non pollutant source) pollutant reductions and water quality improvement at Han-rive because BOD, T-N, and T-P NPS discharges took 90% of total pollutant from this area. In this study, direct runoff and NPS pollutant loads were evaluated before and after development using spatio-tamporal change in CN(curve number) and EMC(event mean concentration) data. It was found that direct runoff value is $23,584,724m^3$, and BOD, T-N and T-P loads are 104,456 kg/year, 111,483 kg/year and 7,500 kg/year under pre-development condition, respectively. Annual runoff, BOD, T-N and T-P reducing rate were 12.9%, 33.3%, 35.6% and 40.7% under integrated post-development condition, respectively. Based on the results obtained in this study, environment-friendly urban development could be achieved at Yongsan area.

Multichannel Quantum Defect Theory Analysis of Overlapping Resonance Structures in Lu-Fano Plots of Rare Gas Spectra

  • Although overlapping resonances have been studied extensively in conventional resonance theories, there have not been many studies on them in multichannel quantum defect theories (MQDT). In MQDT, overlapping resonances occur between the channels instead of states, which pose far greater difficulty. Their systematic treatment was obtained for cases involving degenerate closed channels by applying our previous theory, which decouples background scattering from the resonance scattering in the MQDT formulation. The use of mathematical theory on con-diagonalization and con-similarity was essential for handling the non-Hermitian symmetric complex matrix. Overlapping resonances in rare gas spectra of Ar, Kr and Xe were analyzed using this theory and the results were compared with the ones of the previous alternative parameterizations of MQDT which make the open-open part $K^{oo}$ and closed-closed part $K^{cc}$ of reactance submatrices zero. The comparison revealed that separation of background and resonance scatterings achieved in our formulation in a systematic way was not achieved in the representation of $K^{oo}\;=\;0\;and\;K^{cc}$ = 0 when overlapping resonances are present.

Non-linear stability analysis of a hybrid barrel vault roof

  • This paper focuses on the buckling capacity of a hybrid grid shell. The eigenvalue buckling, geometrical non-linear elastic buckling and elasto-plastic buckling analyses of the hybrid structure were carried out. Then the influences of the shape and scale of imperfections on the elasto-plastic buckling loads were discussed. Also, the effects of different structural parameters, such as the rise-to-span ratio, beam section, area and pre-stress of cables and boundary conditions, on the failure load were investigated. Based on the comparison between elastic and elasto-plastic buckling loads, the effect of material non-linearity on the stability of the hybrid barrel vault is found significant. Furthermore, the stability of a hybrid barrel vault is sensitive to the anti-symmetrical distribution of loads. It is also shown that the structures are highly imperfection sensitive which can greatly reduce their failure loads. The results also show that the support conditions pose significant effect on the elasto-plastic buckling load of a perfect hybrid structure.

Postural Control Strategies on Smart Phone use during Gait in Over 50-year-old Adults (50세 이상 성인의 보행 시 스마트폰 사용에 따른 자세 조절 전략)

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate postural control strategies on smart phone use during gait in over 50-year-old adults. Method: 8 elderly subjects (age: $55.5{\pm}3.29yrs$, height: $159.75{\pm}4.20cm$, weight: $62.87{\pm}8.44kg$) and 10 young subjects (age: $23.8{\pm}3.19yrs$, height: $158.8{\pm}5.97cm$, weight: $53.6{\pm}5.6kg$) participated in the study. They walked at a comfortable pace in a gaitway of ~8 m while: 1) reading text on a smart phone, 2) typing text on a smart phone, or 3) walking without the use of a phone. Gait parameters and kinematic data were evaluated using a three-dimensional movement analysis system. Results: The participants read or wrote text messages they walked with: slower speed; lesser stride length and step width; greater flexion range of motion of the head; more flexion of the thorax in comparison with normal walking. Conclusion: Texting or reading message on a smart phone while walking may pose an additional risk to pedestrians' safety.
