  • This study is concerned with the efficient improvement in the shipboard training of trainees for the marine officers in the future. The shopboard training course is given much weight in the curriculum of the seamanship education for the characteristics of that. In spite of various earlier studies to improve shipboard training system, we don't have desirable one until now on this problem based upon practical and empirical analysis. It seems a matter of urgency should be settled to improve the training environment-training facilities and equipment including simulator education - for the efficient pratice off-shore during training vessels in port. And it is also desired to regulate downward the credit system needed to graduate that trainees should be immersed in their practice without regard to their school records if passed the course during the training period.

  • Liquefaction hazard caused by earthquake is the damage in a wide range. Until now, liquefaction hazard potential at a small area or most structure in Korea was assessed by modified Seed & Idriss method. However, it has been known that this method is not proper for metropolitan area due to a lot of time and data to perform the related ground response analyses such as Shake program. For these reasons, the current method has been used facilities or structures, not metropolitan area. In this study, several contents in seismic design of Eurocode and Korean seismic design standard for Port and Harbor were introduced and applied for assessing the liquefaction potential and mapping the liquefaction hazard by LPI(Liquefaction Potential Index). Finally, Ulsan metropolitan city was practically drawn in two dimensional space.

  • A recently constructed commercial ship is a complexive integrated system like a small city in which has a generator, power distributing facilities, various radio equipments and high power circuit breakers are installed. Therfore it could make a malfunction of the microprocessor in the various control units which are so important during the ocean voyage of larger ship. This paper has studied whether is properly required or not on the view of the actual electro magnetic compatibility status on the electromagnetic interference and suceptibility test requirments listed on the IACS (International Association of the Classification Society). Through these results, we are looking forward to the new suggestions of the Electro Magnetic Compatibility test in order to reduce the malfunction in the ship regarding test item, test level, and test condition.

  • Bangkok Bar Channel is a unique approach channel to Bangkok(on Toi)Harbor that is the representative river port constructed along the river mouth of Chao Praya River. Various facilities are scattered along the both sides of the river between the river mouth and the bridge located about 50km upward. The construction of the channel began in 1951 and was completed in 1954. (omitted)

  • Because shore(ship) to ship(shore) communication service via INMARSAT pay expensive cost, satellite service typically use two stage service that land users dial up LES(Land Earth Station) for sending or receiving message. In order to send and receive message, land users must maintain online state with LES on dedicated line. Also, two stage INMARSAT communication service must consume long time that processes step by step. In case of large company, they have own communication system, but small companys communicate simple messages with only telex. This paper describes the design and implementation of an integrated communication services via INMARSAT-C. This system uses inexpensive INMARSAT-C for transmission between ship and land. Because this system provides web and E-Mail interface, users send and receive messages easily and quickly. This system provides most users with inexpensive and easy communication facilities between ship and land.

  • Since 1972 the growth of container services in Korea has been explosive and many shipping lines have heavily committed themselves to containerization as a means of lowering their operational costs by introducing capital-intensive methods to the traditionally labour-intensive field of general cargoes. However, by the lack of comprehensive long-range planning for the reception of containerization there has been bottle-neck at some of the stages along which import-export cargo may pass through a berth to shippers' premises. The aim of this article is to examine the present status of containerization in Korea and assess the implications of containerization for the location of the various distributive facilities: ports, inland container transport, inland clearance depots, groupage terminals, distribution depots at the national level.

  • Together with the trend of enhancement in domestic industrial development and economic progress due to import and export, the demand for construction of the roads, bridges, especially port facilities, and several coastal protection and ocean structures is increasing rapidly. MOMAF of Korean Government is driving construction cf 9 new ports and renovation cf the existing fishery ports. Among these structures most of bridge base, wharves, dolphins, quays, and jetties are being newly built cf steel or concrete pile. As the base, supporting bulkheads, and piles are underwater after construction, it is difficult to figure out the status of structures and not enough to get maintenance and strengthen the structures. Every year, moreover, these works suck the government budget due to higher incomplete maintenance expense for protection from corrosions cf structures and increased underwater construction period. For the purpose cf cutting down the expense cf government budget, it is necessary to extend the life cycle of the existing structures. Therefore, we developed a new method for maintenance of submerged structures near the waterline by allowing dry work environment with the floating caisson. The method shows easy to move around the working area and handle. It also showed not only a significant reduction of maintenance expenses and time for anti-corrosion work but also better protection This will be a milestone to reduce the maintenance and construction expenses for the shore and water structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to use DEA modeling to make an analysis on 12 ODCYs in the hinterland of Busan North Port, so that it may propose possible ways to efficiently operate them. For analysis, this study adopted 3 input factors such as CY area, number of employees and number of cargo work equipments and also adopted 1 output factor, i.e. container throughput. According to the analysis DEA-CCR model, it was found that Chunil(YongDang CY) was the most efficient one among companies engaged in the operation of ODCY. And it was found that KCTC(YongDang CY), Kukbo(U-Am CY), KORAIL(BusanJin CY) and Hanjin (JaeSong CY) would need to boost the container throughput 5 or more times higher than current throughput with a view to improving cargo handling efficiency, while Sebang(U-Am CY), KCTC(U-Am CY), KCTC(YongDang CY), Hyopsung(YongDang CY) and Kukbo(U-Am CY) need to work on personnel restructuring targeted to current employees. Based on the analysis DEA-BCC model, it was found that Chunil(YongDang CY), Dongbu(ShinYoung GamMan CY), Intergis(GamMan CY) and Sebang(U-Am CY) were efficient companies, but KCTC(YongDang CY), Kukbo(U-Am CY), KORAIL(BusanJin CY) and Hanjin(JaeSong CY) were inefficient companies. Particularly, it was found that both KCTC(U-Am CY) and Kukbo(U-Am CY) would need to try harder to carry out personnel reshuffle than other comparable companies.

  • Busan is located at the mouth of Nakdong River and if an earthquake occurs, it is very likely that the damage by the earthquake will be worse as liquefaction can happen in the sand layer, builtup soil, and landfill ground due to amplification in the lower sedimentary layer that is well developed in the river mouth. Therefore, this study first examined the possibility of liquefaction in the replaced sand layer under breakwater using 14 earthquakes in 5.6-7.9 scale and artificial earthquakes including the seismic wave suggested in the standard specifications for seismic design of ports and fishing port facilities to evaluate the stability of breakwater which is the primary protective structure for port facilities against earthquakes. Second, analysis on characteristics of the seismic energy and acceleration response spectrum by size of earthquake was performed to suggest the most appropriate size of seismic wave for the condition in Korea. Third, finite element analysis was performed using the suggested seismic wave to study the characteristics of earthquake by finding the dynamic lateral displacement of breakwater and verifying the stability of structure and the displacement and forces occurring at geotextile. Results of the study showed that the possibility of liquefaction in the landfill and replaced sand layer, the dynamic lateral displacement of breakwater, and changes of geotextile are greatly affected by the subsurface ground (replaced sand layer).
