Removing residual water in a fuel cell is a critical operational process for managing its performance and controlling its lifetime. Understanding the mechanism of water transport in fuel cells is essential for the design of the water removal process. In this study, an experimental method for measuring the water evaporation rate through a gas diffusion layer, which is a porous medium, under steady-state conditions was developed. Experimental bench tests were conducted to apply the developed method. Then, the effects of various parameters of the drying gas and the gas diffusion layer were experimentally measured. The water evaporation rate increased as the humidity of the drying gas decreased and the flow rate of the drying gas increased. In addition, a thinner gas diffusion layer yielded a higher water evaporation rate.
Multi-layered granules were prepared by a fluidized-bed coater and uniformed granules were obtained with a size range between $950{\sim}1000{\mu}m$ in diameter. The granule system was composed of three layers, i.e. seed layer with sugar sphere bead and a water-swellable polymer, middle layer with a drug, solubilizer and polymer, and the top layer of porous membrane with a polymeric binder. The aim of this work is to find out the dependence of a drug dissolution rate on the amount of a water-soluble binder and a solubilizer in the granule system. The results showed that the higher amount of hydrophilic binder in the porous membrane, gave the bigger pore size and porosity and made faster dissolution rate and also the higher amount of solubilizer in drug layer enhanced the dissolution rate of drug.

The shelter effect of a porous wind fence on a triangular prism was experimentally investigated in a circulating water channel. A porous fence of porosity .epsilon.=38.5% was installed in front of the prism model. The fence and prism model were embedded in a turbulent boundary layer. The instantaneous velocity fields around the fence and prism model were measured by using the instantaneous velocity fields around the fence and prism model were measured by using the 2-frame PTV(Particle Tracking Velocimetry) system. By installing the fence in front of the prism, the recirculation flow region decreases compared with that of no fence case. The porous fence also decreases the mean velocity, turbulent intensity and turbulent kinetic energy around the prism. Especially, at the top of the prism, the turbulent kinetic energy is about half of that without the fence.
Perforated wall has long been employed to control a variety of flow phenomena. It has been, in general, characterized by a porosity of the perforated wall. However, this porosity value does not take account of the number and detailed shape of porous holes, but is defined by only the ratio of the perforated area to total wall surface area. In order to quantify the porous wall effects on the flow control performance, an effective porosity should be known with the detailed flow properties inside the porous holes. In the present study, a theoretical analysis using a small disturbance method is performed to investigate detailed flow information through porous hole and a computational work is also carried out using the two-dimensional, compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Both the results are compared with existing experimental data. The gasdynamical porosity is defined to elucidate the effect of perforated wall.
We propose that we use a porous-Si for a new spatial walk-off polarizing material with a large split angle. The beam-split an91e f is determined by the filling factor g(or porosity p) of the columnar dielectric substance and the slant angle $\theta$. Theoretically, by the assuming that $n_2$=3.5, and $n_1$=1 one can predict that a large split angle, up to $27^{\circ}$, is possible if one can construct such films with $Si.^{[3]}$ To accomplish this, we use porous-Si. As a result of theoretical simulation, the best structural parameters for attaining the maximum split angle $\phi$=$27.5^{\circ}$ are $\theta$=$58.7^{\circ}$ and p=57.6%.
Distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) porous silicon (PSi) was generated by an electrochemical etching a bragg structure into a silicon wafer through electrode current in aqueous ethanolic HF solution. DBR PSi exhibiting unique reflectivity was successfully obtained by an electrochemical etching of silicon wafer using square current waveform. The multilayered photonic crystals of DBR PSi exhibited the reflection of a specific wavelength with high reflectivity in the optical reflectivity spectrum. In this work, we have developed a method to create refractive index in Si substrate through intensity of an electric current. The electrochemical process allows for precise control of the structural properties of DBR PSi such as thickness of the porous layer, porosity, and average pore diameter. The number of reflection peak of DBR PSi and its pore size increased as the intensity of electric current increased. This might be a demonstration for the fabrication of specific reflectors or filters.
This paper proposes the use of a porous core between layers of laminated composite plates to examine its effect on the natural frequencies of the resulted porous laminated composite sandwich plate (PLCSP) resting on a two-parameter elastic foundation. Moreover, it has been suggested that the dispersion of porosity has two different functionally graded (FG) patterns which are compared with a uniformly dispersed (UD) profile to find their best vibrational efficiency in the proposed PLCSPs. In FG patterns, two types of dispersions, including symmetric (FG-S) and asymmetric (FG-A) patterns have been considered. To derive the governing Eigen value equation of such structures, the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) of plates has been employed. Accordingly, a finite element method (FEM) is developed to solve the derived Eigen value equation. Using the mentioned theory and method, the effects of porosity parameters, fiber orientation of laminated composite, geometrical dimensions, boundary conditions and elastic foundation on the natural frequencies of the proposed PLCSPs have been studied. It is observed that embedding porosity in core layer leads to a significant improvement in the natural frequencies of PLCSPs. Moreover, the natural frequencies of PLCSPs with FG porous core are higher than those with UD porous core.
Porous surfaced Ti implant compacts were fabricated by electro-discharging-sintering (EDS) of atomized spherical Ti powders. Powders of $50-100{\mu}m$ in diameter were vibratarily settled into a quarts tube and subject to a high voltage and high density current pulse in Ar atmosphere. Single pulse of 0.7 to 2.0 kJ/0.7 gpowder, from 150, 300, and $450{\mu}F$ capacitors was applied in less than $400{\mu}sec$ to produce twelve different porous-surfaced Ti implant compacts. The solid core formed in the center of the compact shows similar microstructure of cp Ti which was annealed and quenched in water. Hardness value at the solid core was much higher than that at the particle interface and particles in the porous layer, which can be attributed to both heat treatment and work hardening effects induced by EDS. Compression tests were made to evaluate the mechanical properties of the EDS compacts. The compressive yield strength was in a range of 12 to 304MPa which significantly depends on input energy. Selected porous-surfaced Ti-6Al-4V dental implant compacts with a solid core have much higher compressive strengths compared to the human teeth and sintered Ti dental implants fabricated by conventional sintering process.

Anatomical characteristics of genus Platycarya, Juglans and Pterocarya of Juglandaceae occurring in Korea were described and coded based on the IAWA list. Juglandaceae are ring-porous or semi-ring-porous. Vessels have simple perforation plates and helical thickenings in some genus. Axial parenchyma cells were abundant, most apotracheal but rarely paratracheal and rays with 1-5 seriate. Platycarya is ring-porous wood with 2-3 rows of vessels in the pore zone. Helical thickenings were found only in small vessel of latewood. Axial parenchyma were commonly diffuse-in-aggregates or vasicentric. Rays 3-5 seriate. belonging to Kribs' heterogeneous II or III type with frequent occurrence of rhomboidal crystals. Juglans are semi ring-porous with few vessels in $mm^2$ and pores are commonly solitary. Axial parenchyma were diffuse-in-aggregate or marginal. Rays were mostly homocellular and 3-5 seriates. Pterocarya is similar to Juglans in anatomical features but the reticulate parenchyma consisting of 1 layer on transverse section and biseriate rays.
This is the first attempt to consider the nonlinear bending analysis of porous functionally graded (FG) thick annular and circular nanoplates resting on Kerr foundation. The size effects are captured based on modified couple stress theory (MCST). The material properties of the porous FG nanostructure are assumed to vary smoothly through the thickness according to a power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituent materials. The elastic medium is modeled by Kerr elastic foundation which consists of two spring layers and one shear layer. The governing equations are extracted based on Hamilton's principle and two variables refined plate theory. Utilizing generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM), the nonlinear static behavior of the nanostructure is obtained under different boundary conditions. The effects of various parameters such as material length scale parameter, boundary conditions, and geometrical parameters of the nanoplate, elastic medium constants, porosity and FG index are shown on the nonlinear deflection of the annular and circular nanoplates. The results indicate that with increasing the material length scale parameter, the nonlinear deflection is decreased. In addition, the dimensionless nonlinear deflection of the porous annular nanoplate is diminished with the increase of porosity parameter. It is hoped that the present work may provide a benchmark in the study of nonlinear static behavior of porous nanoplates.
