Recently, spillways are need to control stable water level for supporting main dams because of floods by unusual change of weather such as Typhoon Rusa. This study has been focused on the amount of leakage through the rock mass distributed fractures and joints under the opened emergency spillway. It is very important to evaluate the amount of leakage as these affect stability of spillway by interaction between effective stress and pore pressure. The commercial program MAFIC has been used for analyzing groundwater flow in fractured rock mass. The results showed that the values of range, average and deviation of leakage were 2.85∼ 3.79×10-1, 3.32×10-1 and 1.70×10-2 m3/day/m2 respectively. Secondary, we have estimated the effect of grouting after the transmissivity(Tf) of joint 1 as main pathway of leakage known from above results was changed from 1.78×10-7 to 1.59×10-9 m2/s. The results showed that the values of range, average and deviation of leakage were 7.80×10-4∼1.53×10-3, 1.18×10-3 and 1.32×10-4 m3/day/m2 respectively. As the result, the amount of leakage after grouting has been decreased by a ratio of 1 to 277.
In the engineering barriers of high-level radioactive waste disposal, gases could be generated through a number of processes. If the gas production rate exceeds the gas diffusion rate, the pressure of the gas increases and gases could migrate through the bentonite buffer. Because people and the environment can be exposed to radioactivity, it is very important to clarify gas migration in terms of long-term integrity of the engineered barrier system. In particular, it is necessary to identify the hydro-mechanical mechanism for the dilation flow, which is a very important gas flow phenomenon only in medium containing large amounts of clay materials such as bentonite buffer, and to develop and validate new numerical approach for the quantitative evaluation of the gas migration phenomenon. Therefore, in this study, we developed a two-phase flow model considering the mechanical damage model in order to simulate the gas migration in the engineered barrier system, and validated with 1D gas flow modelling through saturated bentonite under constant volume boundary conditions. As a result of numerical analysis, the rapid increase in pore water pressure, stress, and gas outflow could be simulated when the dilation flow was occurred.
Adfreeze bond strength develops upon freezing of pore water within soil and at foundation surface. It has been reported that various factors like temperature, soil type, and pile surface roughness affect adfreeze bond strength. Especially, pile surface roughness has been considered as a primary factor to design pile foundation in frozen ground. It has usually been estimated with fixed correction factors for pile materials. However, even if the pile foundation material is the same, the surface roughness could vary depending on the production circumstances. In this study, laboratory test was carried out to quantitatively analyze the effects of surface roughness on the adfreeze bond strength, and fractal dimension was used as a measure for surface roughness. Test results showed that adfreeze bond strength increased with decreasing temperature, increasing vertical stress and surface roughness. The adfreeze bond strength varies sensitively with surface roughness in the early freezing section of $-2^{\circ}C$, but its sensitivity decreased in the temperature ranging between $-2^{\circ}C$ to $-5^{\circ}C$. The results conclude that the roughness highly affects the frictional resistance of pile surface in frozen ground; however, the roughness does not affect considerably when the temperature drops below about $-2^{\circ}C$.
This paper is written to evaluate the ground stability according to the construction of Jeju 2nd airport. Sumgol is the unique characteristics of Jeju soil, which is used to evaluate the ground stability of the airport. The research contents are as follows. 1) The geotechnical characteristics for Jeju 2nd airport was analyzed, and the Sumgol and geotechnical properties were calculated based on the existing geotechnical survey data. 2) The divided sections of Jeju 2nd airport were modeled to evaluate the ground stability after determining the section (runway and airport facilities) which have the different soil and loading properties. 3) The stability and deformation ranges of the airport ground were identified through numerical analysis. The entire airport was divided into three sections to analyze the stability of Jeju 2nd airport, and calculated the stresses, settlements, and strains of each section by computer numerical analysis modeling. For modeling, the ground and load conditions were examined, also pavement conditions for each airport ground section were examined. From the analysis results of each section according to the ground conditions, the vertical settlements were analyzed as 0.11~0.18 m and the sum of effective stress and pore water pressure were 92.75~445 kPa. These results were made by taking into account the Sumgol of the bottom ground without reinforcement, also the soil strength parameters of the airport ground were reduced for computer modeling, Therefore, if proper reinforcements are applied to the ground of Jeju 2nd airport, sufficient airport ground stability can be secured.
There is a growing interest in evaluating earthquake damage and determining disaster prevention measures due to the magnitude 5.8 earthquake in Pohang, Korea. Since the liquefaction phenomena occurred extensively in the residential area as a result of the earthquake, there was a demand for research on liquefaction phenomenon evaluation and liquefaction disaster prediction. Liquefaction is defined as a phenomenon where the strength of the ground is completely lost due to a sudden increase in excess pore water pressure caused due to large dynamic stress, such as an earthquake, acting on loose sand particles in a short period of time. The liquefaction potential index, which can identify the occurrence of liquefaction and predict the risk of liquefaction in a targeted area, can be used to create a liquefaction hazard map. However, since liquefaction assessment using existing field testing is predicated on a single borehole liquefaction assessment, there has been a representative issue for the whole targeted area. Spatial interpolation and geographic information systems can help to solve this issue to some extent. Therefore, in order to solve the representative problem of geotechnical information, this research uses the kriging method, one of the geostatistical spatial interpolation techniques, and constructs a geotechnical information database for liquefaction and spatial interpolation. Additionally, the liquefaction hazard map was created for each return period using the constructed geotechnical information database. Cross validation was used to confirm the accuracy of this liquefaction hazard map.
Liquefaction refers to a phenomenon in which excessive pore water pressure occurs when a dynamic load such as an earthquake rapidly acts on a loose sandy soil saturated with soil, and the ground loses effective stress and becomes liquefied. The indoor repeated test for liquefaction evaluation can be confirmed through the repeated triaxial compression test and the repeated shear test. In this regard, this study tried to confirm the liquefaction resistance strength according to the relative density and particle size distribution of sand using the repeated triaxial compression test. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the liquefaction resistance strength increased as the relative density increased regardless of the soil classification, and the liquefaction resistance strength according to the particle size distribution of the sand was confirmed that the liquefaction resistance strength of the SP sample close to SW was significantly higher. In addition, as a result of analyzing 30% of fine powder compared to 0% of fine powder, as the relative density increased to 40~70%, the liquefaction resistance strength decreased by 5~20%, and the domestic weathered soil ground had a fine liquefaction resistance strength compared to Jumunjin standard sand. When the minute was 10%, it was measured to be 30% or more, and when the fine particle was 30%, it was measured to be less than 50%.

Recently, the frequency and intensity of typhoon-induced wave loading are increasing due to changed marine environments such as climate change. In addition, frequent earthquakes are causing a lot of damage around the world, including in Japan, Chile, Haiti, China, and Indonesia. In Korea, damage from typhoons has also been increasing since the 2000s, and the frequency and intensity of earthquakes are also increasing. Korea is surrounded by sea on three sides, so typhoons can cause a lot of damage to coastal structures, and earthquakes also cause a lot of damage to coastal structures. As such, the frequency and intensity of typhoon-induced wave loading and earthquakes are increasing both domestically and internationally, but there is no research linking typhoons and earthquakes. Therefore, in this study, numerical analysis was performed for a total of four cases by linking typhoon waves and earthquakes to the caisson breakwater. Numerical analysis was performed by applying wave loads in Case 1 and seismic wave in Case 2, seismic wave after wave loads in Case 3, and wave loads after seismic wave in Case 4. As a result of the numerical analysis, it was confirmed that in Case 3 and Case 4, which linked a typhoon and earthquakes, the damage caused by each load increased compared to Case 1 and Case 2 because the load was applied while the existing ground strength was reduced. In addition, it was confirmed that the greatest damage occurred in Case 3, in which seismic wave were applied after the wave loads.

In the disposal environment, gases can be generated at the interface between canister and buffer due to various factors such as anaerobic corrosion, radiolysis, and microbial degradation. If the gas generation rate exceeds the diffusion rate, the gas within the buffer may compress, resulting in physical damage to the buffer due to the increased pore pressure. In particular, the rapid movement of gases, known as gas breakthroughs, through the dilatancy pathway formed during this process may lead to releasing radionuclide. Therefore, understanding these gas generation and movement mechanism is essential for the safety assessment of the disposal systems. In this study, an experimental apparatus for investigating gas migration within buffer was constructed based on a literature review. Subsequently, a gas injection experiment was conducted on a compacted bentonite block made of Bentonile WRK (Clariant Ltd.) powder. The results clearly demonstrated a sharp increase in stress and pressure typically observed at the onset of gas breakthrough within the buffer. Additionally, the range of stresses induced by the swelling phenomenon of the buffer, was 4.7 to 9.1 MPa. The apparent gas entry pressure was determined to be approximately 7.8 MPa. The equipment established in this study is expected to be utilized for various experiments aimed at building a database on the initial properties of buffer and the conditions during gas injection, contributing to understanding the gas migration phenomena.
This paper presents a quantitative evaluation of water permeability in concrete with cold joint considering mineral admixture and loading conditions. Concrete samples with OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) and GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) are prepared considering 0.6 of W/C ratio and 40% of replacement. 30% and 60% loading levels for compression and 60% loading level for tension are induced to concrete samples. In compression conditions, the permeability in control case shows $2.41{\times}10^{-11}m/s$ in OPC concrete, and it changes to $2.07{\times}10^{-11}m/s$ (30% of peak) and $2.36{\times}10^{-11}m/s$ (60% of peak). The results in GGBFS concrete shows the same trend, which yields $2.17{\times}10^{-11}m/s$ (control), $1.65{\times}10^{-11}m/s$ (30% of peak), and $1.96{\times}10^{-11}m/s$ (60% of peak), respectively. In tensile conditions, the permeability increases from $2.37{\times}10^{-11}m/s$ (control) to $2.67{\times}10^{-11}m/s$ (60% of peak) while that in GGBFS concrete increases from $2.17{\times}10^{-11}m/s$ (control) to $2.24{\times}10^{-11}m/s$ (60% of peak). Permeability coefficients decreases in 30% of compressive level but increases in 60% level, while results in tensile level increases rapidly. This shows pore structure in concrete is condensed and with loading and permeability increases due to micro-cracking. Permeability evaluation considering the effects of loading conditions, cold joint, and GGBFS is verified to be important since water permeability greatly changes due to their effects.
The engineered barrier system of high-level radioactive waste disposal must maintain its performance in the long term, because it must play a role in slowing the rate of leakage to the surrounding rock mass even if a radionuclide leak occurs from the canister. In particular, it is very important to clarify gas dilation flow phenomenon clearly, that occurs only in a medium containing a large amount of clay material such as a bentonite buffer, which can affect the long-term performance of the bentonite buffer. Accordingly, DECOVALEX-2019 Task A was conducted to identify the hydraulic-mechanical mechanism for the dilation flow, and to develop and verify a new numerical analysis technique for quantitative evaluation of gas migration phenomena. In this study, based on the conventional two-phase flow and mechanical behavior with effective stresses in the porous medium, the hydraulic-mechanical model was developed considering the concept of damage to simulate the formation of micro-cracks and expansion of the medium and the corresponding change in the hydraulic properties. Model verification and validation were conducted through comparison with the results of 1D and 3D gas injection tests. As a result of the numerical analysis, it was possible to model the sudden increase in pore water pressure, stress, gas inflow and outflow rate due to the dilation flow induced by gas pressure, however, the influence of the hydraulic-mechanical interaction was underestimated. Nevertheless, this study can provide a preliminary model for the dilation flow and a basis for developing an advanced model. It is believed that it can be used not only for analyzing data from laboratory and field tests, but also for long-term performance evaluation of the high-level radioactive waste disposal system.
