This research was focused on the selective separation of $CO_2$ or $CH_4$ from mixture of these gases, by controlling the size of pore or pore gate. Pitch based activated carbon fibers(ACF) were used as adsorbents. The size of pore gate was controlled by the molecule having similar size to that of pore opening. After the adsorption of adsorbate on pore surface, planar molecules such as benzene and naphthalene covered the pore gate. The slow release of adsorbate from the pores covered by planar molecules makes apertures between planar molecules covering pore gate and this structure can be fixed by rapid pyrolysis. The control of pore gate using benzene as covering molecules could not accomplished due to the simultaneous volatilization of benzene and adsorbate$(CO_2)$ caused by similar temperatures of benzene volatilization and adsorbate desorption. Therefore we replaced benzene with naphthalene looking for the stability at a $CO_2$ desorption temperature. The naphthalene molecule was adsorbed on the ACF up to 15% of ACF weight and showed no desorption until $100^{\circ}C$, indicating that the molecule could be used as a good cover molecule. Naphthalene could cover almost all the pore gate, reducing BET surface area from 753 $m^2/g$ to 0.7 $m^2/g$. A mixed gas$(CO_2:CH_4=50:50)$ was adsorbed on the naphthalene treated OG-7A ACF. The amount of $CO_2$ adsorption increased with total pressure, whileas thai of $CH_4$ was not so much influenced on the pressure, indicating that $CO_2$ made more compounds on the ACF surface along with total pressure increase. The most $CO_2$ and the least $CH_4$ were adsorbed in the condition of 0.4 atm, resulting in the highly pure $CH_4$ left in ACF.
SiC hollow fiber was fabricated by curing, dissolution and sintering of Al-PCS fiber, which was melt spun the polyaluminocarbosilane. Al-PCS fiber was thermally oxidized and dissolved in toluene to remove the unoxidized area, the core of the cured fiber. The wall thickness ($t_{wall}$) of Al-PCS fiber was monotonically increased with an increasing oxidation curing time. The Al-PCS hollow fiber was heat-treated at the temperature between 1200 and $2000^{\circ}C$ to make a SiC hollow fibers having porous structure on the fiber wall. The pore size of the fiber wall was increased with the sintering temperature due to the decomposition of the amorphous $SiC_xO_y$ matrix and the growth of ${\beta}$-SiC in the matrix. At $1400^{\circ}C$, a nano porous wall with a high specific surface area was obtained. However, nano pores grew with the grain growth after the thermal decomposition of the amorphous matrix. This type of SiC hollow fibers are expected to be used as a substrate for a gas separation membrane.
A study on the fouling control by periodical ozone-scrubbing was conducted in a membrane filtration process for drinking water treatment. Hydrophilic hollow fiber polyethylene membrane with pore size of $0.1{\mu}m$ and its surface area of $0.42m^2$ was used. Dead-End filtration method was selected to obtain high efficiency of energy. Laboratory prepared synthetic raw water with kaolin was used and the membranes were scrubbed by ozone once in an hour and once in two hours. When the duration of ozone scrubbing was increased from 10 seconds to 20 seconds, the rate of membrane fouling was significantly decreased. Although the frequency of ozone-scrubbing was reduced from once in an hour to once in two hours. the effect of fouling control was unchanged. However, ozone-scrubbing was not effective after a membrane was fouled and washed with detergent for reuse. Among several possible working effects of ozone, bactericidal effect was confirmed to be the primary reason of fouling control.

Recently, there has been growing interest in the study of removal of harmful and hazardous pollutants emitted by industrial activities. In this study, we have developed porous activated carbon fibers prepared by a water vapor activation method and analyzed the adsorptions of the harmful gases with electrochemical responses of activated carbon fibers. To control the uniformity of pore structures, active reaction areas, and active sites, the reaction conditions of activation temperatures were varied from 750 to 850 ℃ with the predetermined reaction time intervals (30 to 240 min). The SO2 and NO gas adsorptions of activated carbon fibers prepared by various reaction conditions were analyzed and monitored by electrochemical sensor responses. In particular, the activated carbon fibers prepared at the reaction temperature of 850 ℃ and time of 45 min showed the highest specific surface area (1,041.9 ㎡/g) and pore characteristics (0.42 ㎤/g), and excellent adsorption capabilities of SO2 (1.061 mg/g) and NO (1.210 mg/g) gases, respectively.

Bead type and hollow fiber type catalyst (HFC, Hollow Fiber type Catalyst) was prepared by $La_{0.1}Sr_{0.9}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (LSCF1928) perovskite powder catalyst which showed excellent methane complete oxidation characteristics through previous studies. The HFC have a cylindrical shape with an empty interior, and pores can be formed through Phase inversion method so the specific surface area can be remarkably improved. In the case of the bead type catalyst prepared by adding Methyl Cellulose (MC), $SrCO_3$ was produced in addition to the original catalyst composition of LSCF1928 due to the reaction of $CO_2$ emitted from MC and Sr of the catalyst. In the case of the HFC, a single phase perovskite structure was obtained without impurities. The HFC calcined at $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ showed pore structure of finger-sponge-finger structure, and 99.9% oxygen conversion rate was achieved through complete oxidation of methane at $475^{\circ}C$. Air gap and spinning pressure condition were changed to control the HFC pore. 2 cm air gap and 7 bar spinning pressure showed the best catalytic performance and achieved oxygen conversion rates of more than 70.65%, 93.01%, and 99.99% at $425^{\circ}C$, $450^{\circ}C$ and $475^{\circ}C$, respectively.
The pilot study was conducted to (i) investigate the ability of various membrane integrity monitoring methods to detect changes in membrane integrity during operation, and (ii) determine the impact of membrane damage on microbial removal by microfiltration. Two variations of air pressure hold tests were investigated for direct integrity monitoring: pressure decay (PD) and diffusive air flow (DAF) tests which are most commonly used integrity tests for microfiltration (MF) membranes. Both PD and DAF tests were sensitive enough to detect one damaged fiber out of 66,000 under field operaing conditions. Indirect integrity monitoring such as turbidity and particle counting, however, responded poorly to defects in membrane systems. Microbial challenge study was performed using both new and deliberately damaged membranes, as well as varying the state of fouling of the membrane. This study demonstrated that MF membrane with nominal pore size $0.2{\mu}m$ was capable of removing various pathogens including coliform, spore, and cryptosporidium, at the level required by drinking water regulations, even when high operating pressures were applied. A sharp decrease in average log reduction value (LRV) was observed when one fiber was damaged, emphasizing the importance of membrane integrity in control of microbial contamination.

In this study, adsorption and desorption characteristics of pulverized waste paper-mulberry pellet and bast fiber were measured to confirm the applicability to humidity control products. Paper-mulberry powder was classified by 710-355㎛, 355-100㎛, 100-45㎛ and less than 45㎛ and used in experiment. Specific surface area increased from 1.02㎡/g to 1.35㎡/g as the particle size decreased from 710㎛ to under 45㎛. Adsorption and desorption performance decreased in the order of 355-100㎛, 710-355㎛, 100-45㎛, less than 45㎛ and bast fiber, adsorption content on each particle sizes were 141.1g/㎡, 147.1g/㎡, 135.7g/㎡, 129.0g/㎡ and desorption content were 117.2g/㎡, 123.6g/㎡, 110.2g/㎡, 93.3g/㎡. As a result, adsorption and desorption performance of paper-mulberry powder were superior to those of the bast fiber and these phenomenon can be considered that it caused by pore distribution in pellet and damage of fiber.

We present a method of fabricating poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) porous microfibers using a pore template. PLGA microfibers were synthesized using a glass capillary tube in a poly-(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microfluidic chip. Gelatin solution was used as a porous template to prepare pores in microfibers. Two phases of PLGA solutions in different solvents-DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) and DCM (dichloromethane)-were used to control the porosity and strength of the porous microfibers. The porosity of the PLGA microfibers differed depending on the ratio of flow rates in the two phases. The porous structure was formed in a spiral shape on the microfiber. The porous structure of the microfiber is expected to improve transfer of oxygen and nutrients, which is important for cell viability in tissue engineering.
Ceramic fiber separator is the promising material for thermal battery system because it reduces the production cost and offers the potential to a new application compared to a pellet type electrolyte. The electrolyte separator for thermal battery should be easily handled and loaded a large amount of the molten lithium salt. Ceramic fibers were used as an electrolyte separator and the lithium based molten salts were infiltrated into the ceramic filters. Leakage of molten salt (several lithium salts) leads to short-circuit during the thermal battery operation. In this study, a uniform and fine SiOC mat with fibers ranging from 1 to 3 ${\mu}m$ was obtained by electrospinning of polycarbosilane and pyrolysis. The optimum spinning conditions for obtaining fine diameters of SiOC fiber were controlled by the solution composition and concentration, applied voltage and spinning rate, release rate by porosity. The pore structures of the ceramic filter and the melting properties of the lithium salts affected to the electrolyte loading and leakage. The importance of the fiber size and porosity and their control was discussed and the mechanical properties were also discussed.

High strength concrete has a structural advantage as well as superior usability and durability, so that its application in building is being steadily augmented. However, in the high temperature like in a fire, the high strength concrete has extreme danger named explosive spalling. It is known that the major cause of explosive spalling is water vapour pressure inside concrete. General solution for preventing concrete from spalling include applying fire protection coats to concrete in order to control the rising temperature of members in case of fire. The purpose of this study is to investigate the high temperature properties of fireproof mortar using organic fiber and various types of fine aggregate for fire protection covering material. The results showed that addition of perlite and polypropylene fiber to mortar modifies its pore structure and reduces its density. This causes the internal temperature to rise. As a results, it is found that a new fireproof mortar can be used in the fire protection covering material in high strength concrete.
