  • This research is suggesting the most effective positioning method for GPS based positioning when no GPS reference point is available in the neighborhood. For this purpose, we carried out positioning of the IGS realtime observatories in Australia in various conditions. According to the research, we were certainly assured the one reference point with a short baseline length is more effective for differential positioning than multiple reference points with a long baseline distance beyond 1,000km and suggested the precise point positioning based positioning method can be an excellent substitute when no reference point is available around an unknown point. The research result may be used as the basic data for accurate positioning in poor reference point environments, especially in Antarctica.

  • This paper explains major considerations for integrated GPS/GLONASS/BDS positioning, and then analyzes integrated GNSS positioning accuracies based on low-cost receivers in open-sky and poor reception environments. In an open-sky environment, horizontal RMSE of the integrated system positioning is about 1.2m. It shows improved result compared with single system positioning, the improvement ratio was 17-55%. In poor reception environments, we sometimes could not do positioning because the number of visible satellites gets below four. In an integrated positioning mode, the number of visible satellites was always higher than four, allowing us to find positions all the time. The horizontal RMSE of the integrated system positioning in poor reception environments is about 6.4m. Compared with single system positioning;the integrated system positioning shows better performance and the improvement ratio was 8-47% for the horizontal directions.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of proper positioning in chest PA X-ray examination. As a study method, this author searched for and analyzed materials related to chest PA X-ray examination from theses and books that had been published previously to understand the importance of proper positioning in chest PA X-ray examination. Generally, one of the examinations frequently done in most of the hospitals is chest PA X-ray examination. Also, in any kinds of X-ray examination, proper positioning is the most fundamental and definite way to provide accurate information about the patient. Poor positioning in chest PA X-ray examination may jeopardize the diagnosis and treatment, increase social cost due to examination needed to be done additionally, and generate additional radiation exposure unnecessarily above all. In conclusion, it is expected that proper positioning in chest PA X-ray examination will exert positive effects such as the provision of accurate information about the patient, prevention of misdiagnosis, reduction in social cost, and lastly decrease in radiation exposure.

  • This study analyzed positioning accuracy of the multi-differential global navigation satellite system (DGNSS) algorithm that integrated GPS, GLONASS, and BDS. Prior to the analysis, four sites of which satellite observation environment was different were selected, and satellite observation environments for each site were analyzed. The analysis results of the algorithm performance at each of the survey points showed that high positioning performance was obtained by using DGPS only without integration of satellite navigation systems in the open sky environment but the positioning performance of multi-DGNSS became higher as the satellite observation environments degraded. The comparison results of improved positioning performance of the multi-DGNSS at the poor reception environment compared to differential global positioning system (DGPS) positioning results showed that horizontal accuracy was improved by 78% and vertical accuracy was improved by 65% approximately.

  • The low cost of Bluetooth technology has led to its wide usage in indoor positioning. However, some inherent shortcomings of Bluetooth technology have limited its further development in indoor positioning, such as the unstable positioning state caused by the fluctuation of Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and the low transmission frequency accompanied by a poor real-time performance in positioning and tracking moving targets. To address these problems, an indoor fusion positioning algorithm of Bluetooth technology and pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) based on a particle filter with dynamic adjustment of weights calculation strategy (BPDW) will be proposed. First, an orderly statistical filter (OSF) sorts the RSSI values of a period and then eliminates outliers to obtain relatively stable RSSI values. Next, the Group-based Trilateration algorithm (GTP) enhances positioning accuracy. Finally, the particle filter algorithm with dynamic adjustment of weight calculation strategy fuses the results of Bluetooth positing and PDR to improve the performance of positioning moving targets. To evaluate the performance of BPDW, we compared BPDW with other representative indoor positioning algorithms, including fingerprint positioning, trilateral positioning (TP), multilateral positioning (MP), Kalman filter, and strong tracking filter. The results showed that BPDW has the best positioning performance on static and moving targets in simulation and actual scenes.

  • This paper shows a feasibility analysis results on RFID for car positioning system. Usually, a car navigation is mainly based on GPS combined with map-matching. However, in the case of poor visibility of satellites, GPS can not supply accurate position information continuously. In recent years, RFID has been considered to be one of key technologies in positioning and localization area. But its application and research results in the area of vehicular positioning are not popular. RFID system consists of tag, reader, antenna and software such as drivers and middleware. The main function of RFID system in a vehicular positioning is to retrieve ID recorded position information from tags which set on the center of road. We propose a positioning method for vehicles using RFID and we present some indoor and outdoor experiment results to show that the proposed method is available in vehicle operational environments.

  • In visible light (VL) positioning based on angle of arrival (AOA) estimation for smart indoor service, the AOA parameters obtained at the receiver has sometimes a random and distributed angle form instead of a point angle form due to the multipath transfer of the actual visible light and short positioning distance. The AOA estimation of a VL signal with a random and parametric distributed angle form may give incorrect AOA parameter estimates, which may result in poor VL positioning performance. In this paper, we classify the AOA parameters of the received VL signal into three forms according to the actual positioning channel environment and consider the short-range VL positioning method. We propose a subspace-based AOA parameter estimation technique and a data fusion method, and analyzed the proposed method by simulation and the measurement of the real VL channel characteristics.

  • Indoor positioning is highlighted recently, and various kinds of indoor positioning systems are under developments. Since positioning systems have their own characteristics, proper positioning scheme should be chosen according to the required specifications. Positioning methods are classified into time-based and angle-based one. This paper presents the error analysis of time-based and angle-based location methods. Because measurements of these methods are nonlinear, linearizations are needed in both cases to estimate the user position. In the linearization, Gauss-Newton method is used in both cases. To analyze the position error, we investigate the error ellipse parameters that include eccentricity, rotation angle, and the size of ellipse. Simulation results show that the major axes of TOA and AOA method lie in different quadrants at most region of workspace, especially where the geometry is poor. When the TOA/AOA hybrid is employed, it is found that the error ellipse is reduced to the intersection of ellipses of TOA and AOA.

  • In order to find out partial discharge (PD) phenomena in the cable joint due to the poor workmanship during the installation, the relationship between PD inception voltages and joint defects was investigated. For the purpose, in the joint of 22.9kV CNCV cables, electric fields were calculated for various semiconductive layer wrong positioning (WP) defects. And, PDIV were investigated through the experiments and compared with the results of electric field analysis. In all WP defect cases, the PD inception field calculated using measured PDIVs was similarly shown to be the average value of 1.84kV/mm. In addition, the calculated PDIV and the measured PDIV were almost equal, from the PDIV calculation using maximum electric fields and the measured PDIV for the normal case. Throughout this study, it is possible to analyze WP defects due to the poor workmanship and to establish better joint design for the distribution grade extruded cable system.

  • In this paper, we present a novel idea to integrate low cost Inertial Measurement Unit(IMU) and Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) for Telematics applications. As well known, low cost IMU produces large positioning and attitude errors in very short time due to the poor quality of inertial sensor assembly. To conquer the limitation, we present a bimodal approach for integrating IMU and DGPS, taking advantage of positioning and orientation data calculated from CCD images based on photogrammetry and stereo-vision techniques. The positioning and orientation data from the photogrammetric approach are fed back into the Kalman filter to reduce and compensate IMU errors and improve the performance. Experimental results are presented to show the robustness of the proposed method that can provide accurate position and attitude information for extended period for non-aided GPS information.
