  • The present study investigates the ventilation effects on smoke spreading characteristics in railway tunnels with the rescue stations. Experiments were carried out for n-heptane pool fires with a square length 4 cm at different fire locations, and the heat release rates (HRR) were obtained by the measurement of burning rates. In addition, using the commercial code (FLUENT), the present article presents numerical results for smoke behavior in railway tunnels with rescue station, and it uses the MVHS (Modified Volumetric Heat Source) model for estimation of combustion products resulting from the fire source determined from the HRR measurement. As a result, it is found that smoke propagation is prevented successfully by the fire doors located inside the cross-passages and especially, the smoke behavior in the accident tunnel can be controlled through the ventilation system because of substantial change in smoke flow direction in the cross-passages.

  • This paper is an attempt to give a concise overview of the state-of-the-art in the recent liquid hydrogen safety researches with unwanted event progress. The vessel of liquified hydrogen may fail and liquid hydrogen spilled. The hydrogen will immediately start to evaporate above a pool and make a hydrogen cloud. The cloud will disperse and can produce a vapor cloud explosion. The vessel containing the liquid hydrogen may not be able to cope with the boil-off due to heat influx, especially in case of a fire, and a BLEVE may occur. In equipment where it exists as compressed gas, a leak generates a jet of gas that can self-ignite immediately or after a short delay and produce a jet flame, or in case it ignites at a source a certain distance from the leak (delayed ignition), a flash fire occurs in the open and with confinement a deflagration or even detonation may develop. The up-to-date knowledge in these events, recent progress and future research are discussed in brief.

  • We have found the plants belonging to the genus Spartina which has not yet been reported for the flora of Korea. This has been distributed at Dongmak seashore in Ganghwado since 2012. These were identified as common cordgrass (Spartina anglica C. E. Hubb.) belonging to the family Poaceae, the genus Spartina. It is a perennial halophyte as an alien weed that can grow in the tidal flat, native to southern England. Here, we named it for 'Young-guk-Gaet-ggeun-pool' in Korean refer the origin, reported the distribution, spreading condition, and botanical characteristics of common cordgrass. In China, Spartina anglica was introduced in 1963, it was approved that it had benefit in a bioengineering side firstly. But it was known that as a highly invasive plant to make a monotype meadow of Spartina anglica which has deteriorate the ecological function of saltmarsh. And also it has another problem that is not easy to eradicate. The spreading of Spartina anglica which was appeared in the West coast of Korea may threaten severely to the domestic mudflat and estuary ecosystem. For the maintenance of mudflat ecosystem soundly, continuous monitoring and active eradication plans are required.

  • In this paper, we propose an ICT-based smart farm design. At present, the decrease in rural population is naturally inevitable due to the decrease of the total population. The economic burden on each farm grows with increasing labor costs. As a solution to this, the necessity of spreading smart farms using computing resources is emerging. The proposed system utilizes the ICT technology emerging from the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We will use big data analysis to collect a large amount of data and propose a platform for managing collected data and providing efficient services. The proposed platform consists of SOA service layer, middleware layer, resource pool layer and physical resource layer. ICT-based smart farm service can reduce costs and be easy to install and manage because ICT-based smart farm service provides only necessary functions from the user's point of view.

  • This article reviews the papers published in the Korean Journal of Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering during 2015. It is intended to understand the status of current research in the areas of heating, cooling, ventilation, sanitation, and indoor environments of buildings and plant facilities. Conclusions are as follows. (1) The research works on the thermal and fluid engineering were carried out in the areas of flow, heat and mass transfer, cooling and heating, and air-conditioning, the renewable energy system and the flow inside building rooms. Research issues dealing with air-conditioning machines and fire and exhausting smoke were reduced. CFD seems to be spreading to more research areas. (2) Research works on heat transfer area were carried out in the categories of heat transfer characteristics, pool boiling and condensing heat transfer and industrial heat exchangers. Researches on heat transfer characteristics included the economic analysis of GHG emission, micro channel heat exchanger, effect of rib angle on thermal performance, the airside performance of fin-and-tube heat exchangers, theoretical analysis of a rotary heat exchanger, heat exchanger in a cryogenic environment, the performance of a cross-flow-type, indirect evaporative cooler made of paper/plastic film. In the area of pool boiling and condensing, the bubble jet loop heat pipe was studied. In the area of industrial heat exchangers, researches were performed on fin-tube heat exchanger, KSTAR PFC and vacuum vessel at baking phase, the performance of small-sized dehumidification rotor, design of gas-injection port of an asymmetric scroll compressor, effect of slot discharge-angle change on exhaust efficiency of range hood system with air curtain. (3) In the field of refrigeration, various studies were carried in the categories of refrigeration cycle, alternative refrigeration/energy system, system control. In the refrigeration cycle category, a cold-climate heat pump system, $CO_2$ cascade systems, ejector cycles and a PCM-based continuous heating system were investigated. In the alternative refrigeration/energy system category, a polymer adsorption heat pump, an alcohol absorption heat pump and a desiccant-based hybrid refrigeration system were investigated.
