Excessive growth of phytoplankton is a common and severe problem in intensively farmed pangasiid catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) culture ponds. It can lead to cyanobacterial blooms, reduced fish growth, bad-tasting fish flesh, and lower market demand. To investigate how to manage undesirable phytoplankton growth, we evaluated three stocking strategies in nine rural fishponds (0.020-0.022 ha) owned by various farmers: a pangasiid catfish mono culture (treatment 1, $T_1$), and pangasiid catfish-silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) polycultures at two stocking ratios of 1:1 (treatment 2, $T_2$) and 2:1 (treatment 3, $T_3$). The total density of all ponds was approximately 30,000 fishes/ha. Monoculture ($T_1$) resulted in significantly higher (p < 0.05) nutrient levels (nitrate and phosphate) in ponds than did polyculture ($T_2$ and $T_3$). Nutrient loads increased with culture time, resulting in increased growth of phytoplankton, including Cyanophyceae (9 genera), Chlorophyceae (15 genera), Bacillariophyceae (8 genera), and Euglenophyceae (3 genera). The introduction of silver carp as a co-species helped to regulate phytoplankton growth and to improve the water quality of pangasiid catfish culture ponds.
It may be said that ancient wild Chinese garden had been founded during Qin dynasty and completed through Han, Sui and Tang dynasties. At first used as hunting areas for kings, the ancient resort forests began to take forms of garden. They dug a pond in the garden and made a simulated mountains with the soil that came from the excavations for the pond and suc pavilions has Gyong, Ru, Gak etc. were built around the pond. The ponds were different in size from those in Korea, being of the lake-like size. they made three island in the pond, which were the islands of Taoist hermits with supernatural powers, called Bong-lae, Young-ju and Band-jang respectively. the traditional of making those islands began in the Qin era and were completed in the Han era, being descended to posterity as a traditional garden structure of 'three islands in one pond' garden style. Such style was brought to Korea and first appeared as Kung-Nam-Ji in Back-jae kingdom and then brought to Japan, becoming the tradition of constructing ponds from early Heian era. Those lake-like huge Chinese ponds constituted the core of ancient garden where various feasts took place. Such ponds were also placed at the center of the gardens and played the roles of feasting garden ponds. Through the above-mentioned studies of the ancient Chines garden, the origin of them and the influence of the ancient Chinese ponded garden upon those of Korea and Japan were investigated.
Applications of probiotics to shrimp ponds were carried out to determine their effects on water quality. Fermented solutions consisting of Bacillus spp. and Nitrosomonas spp. were applied to a 4 ha shrimp (Fenneropenaeus chinensis) pond from July to September, 2000. In the pond treated with probiotics, daily variations of DO and pH, and concentrations of DIN and DIP were lower than those in the ponds without probiotic treatment. Concentration of phytoplankton was less variable and the number of species was more variable in the probiotic-treated pond than those in the control pond. Variation of bacterial numbers and the number of Vibrio spp. were lower in the treated pond than those in the control pond. It is confirmed that the probiotics can be used to improve water quality of the shrimp ponds.
To study the effect of paddle wheel on water circulation, velocity components were measured in shrimp ponds both along the longitudinal direction from a single paddle wheel and at 25 grid points of two ponds, which have mean water depth of 1.2m and aspect ratio (length/width) 1.05 and 0.68, respectively. An analysis of factors related to water quality and circulation showed that I) a single paddle wheel has an effective distance of 33m for de-stratification, 16m for particulate suspension and 25m for removal of organic material, dispersion of DO and prevention of bed sediment disturbance and ii) with doubling the number of paddle wheels at the pond corners, the flow speed increased by 13% over the ponds, while it reduced by 8.5% around the pond centres. Contrary to expectation, increasing the number of paddle wheel did not generate strong circulation around the pond centre and improve water quality.
To evaluate characteristics of water quality in Jeju, a study was implemented for Han stream and retention ponds. Inflow water quality of retention ponds was heavily dependent on precedent rainfall, and no pesticide was detected due to the little artificial pollution sources. A smooth settling efficiency curve was noticed because heavy particles were already settled down in front of the retention pond. There were weak relationships between retention time and water quality, and this can be attributable to high concentration of pollutants influx at peak inflow. In addition, as Han stream retention pond has a role of groundwater recharge, inflow control based on water quality as well as quantity is needed to maximize pollutant removal at the retention ponds.
A mathematical model is used to investigate nitrogen dynamics in the intensive aquaculture ponds in the western coast of Korea. Parameters associated with water quality, sediments and growing of shrimp (Fenneropenaeus chinensis) are measured to calibrate the model for feeding ponds A and B and storage ponds. The model describes the fate of nitrogen including loadings of ammonia from feeds, phytoplankton assimilation, nitrification, sedimentation, volatilization and discharge. The model obtains good agreements with the measured values of TAN $(NH_4,\;NH_3),\;NO(NO_2,\;NO_3)$ and Chl (chlorophyll a). Impacts of water exchange on TAN and Chl are investigated, showing that the range of 0.01-0.2 (/day) cannot effectively reduce TAN but reduces Chl. Nitrogen in the ponds A is removed by sedimentation $66\%,$ volatilization $8\%,$ discharge of particulate and dissolved $8\%.$ The pond B shows $56\%\;and\;26\%$ of sedimentation and volatilization, respectively, to yield $10\%.$ decrease and 8c/o increase compared to those in the pond A. While the pond A has larger area (1.02:0.66 ha) and same stocking density (0.025 md./L) at the beginning of culture, the pond B obtains higher stocking density (0.0065:0.0091 md./L), longer feeding period (103:121 day) and resultant higher shrimp production (1.15:2.13 t/ha/cycle) at harvest. This is possibly due to the hydraulic characteristics driven by paddlewheels. At low ratio of the low speed area and the pond area, the rate of sedimentation is high, while the rate of gas exchange is low. Thus, the measurement and model analysis suggest that water quality and shrimp production are positively correlated with the hydraulic characteristics in the shrimp ponds.
Hexavalent chromium is a bio accumulative toxic metal in water and fish. It enters aquaculture ponds mainly through anthropogenic sources. Hexavalent chromium concentrations and its effects on the morphology and behavior of Clarias gariepinus were investigated from four aquaculture ponds for 12 weeks. Chromium was measured using diphenyl carbohdrazide method; alkalinity and hardness were measured using colometric method and analyzed with Bench Photometer. Temperature and pH were measured using pH/EC/TDS/Temp combined tester. Temporal and spatial replications of samples were done with triplicates morphological and behavioural effects of the metal on fish were observed visually. Chromium ranged from no detection to 0.05 mg/L, alkalinity 105 to 245 mg/L, hardness 80 to 165 mg/L, pH 6.35 to 8.03 and temperature 29.1 to $35.9^{\circ}C$. Trend in the chromium concentrations in the ponds is natural > earthen > concrete > collapsible. There was a significant difference (P < 0.05) in chromium, alkalinity, water hardness, pH and temperature among the four ponds. Significant positive correlation also existed between alkalinity, water hardness, pH, with chromium. Morphological and behavioural changes observed in the fish include irregular swimming, frequent coming to the surface, dark body colouration, mucous secretion on the body, erosion of gill epithelium, fin disintegration, abdominal distension and lethargy. High chromium concentration in natural pond was due to anthropogenic run-off of materials in to the pond. Acidic pH, low alkalinity, low water hardness also contributed to the high chromium concentration. Morphological and behavioural changes observed were attributed to the high concentrations, toxicity and bio accumulative effect of the metal. Toxicity of chromium to fish in aquaculture could threaten food security. Watershed best management practices and remediation could be adopted to reduce the effects of toxicity of chromium on pond water quality, fish flesh quality and fish welfare.
An experiment was conducted to detect aquaculture pond bottom soil nutrients, pH and electrical conductivity with a view to optimize production and to incorporate the scientific method of fish nursing, rearing and culturing at Noakhali district in Bangladesh. The soil samples were collected from the recently dug ponds (1 - 5 years) and older ponds (> 5 years). Samples were taken from five different spots in a Z shape from each pond and were mixed to get a composite sample. The composite samples from the ponds were collected in polyethylene bags and shipped to the laboratory for analysis. The soil samples were analyzed with respect to pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon (OC), organic matter (OM), nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K) and sulfur (S). The average value of pH, OC, OM, N, P, K and S were $7.43{\pm}0.40$, $2.21{\pm}1.43%$, $1.47{\pm}0.53%$, $2.52{\pm}0.94{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$, $0.126{\pm}0.047{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$, $3.84{\pm}1.77{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$, $0.191{\pm}0.106{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ and $306.72{\pm}222.05{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ respectively, in Noakhali. The average EC, OC, OM, N and P contents were found to be higher in Subornachar than those in Sonapur. On the other hand pH, K and S were found to be higher in Sonapur than the values of Subornachar. The pH, EC, OC, OM, N and S contents were found to be higher in new ponds than old ponds whereas P and K contents were found to be higher in old pond than in new pond.
