An experimental investigation to determine the transfer length of a seven-wire prestressing strand in different concretes is presented in this paper. A testing technique based on the analysis of bond behaviour by means of measuring the force supported by the prestressing strand on a series of specimens with different embedment lengths has been used. An analytical bond model to calculate the transfer length from an inelastic bond stress distribution along the transfer length has been obtained. A relationship between the plastic bond stress for transfer length and the concrete compressive strength at the time of prestress transfer has been found. An equation to predict the average and both the lower bound and the upper bound values of transfer length is proposed. The experimental results have not only been compared with the theoretical prediction from proposed equations in the literature, but also with experimental results obtained by several researchers.

The potential use of Cu-based shape memory alloys (SMA) in retrofitting historical monuments is investigated in this paper. This study is part of the ongoing work conducted in Tunisia within the framework of the FP6 European Union project (WIND-CHIME) on the use of appropriate modern seismic protective systems in the conservation of Mediterranean historical buildings in earthquake-prone areas. The present investigation consists of a finite element simulation, as a preliminary to an experimental study where a cantilever masonry wall, representing a part of a historical monument, is subjected to monotonic and quasi-static cyclic loadings around a horizontal axis at the base level. The wall was retrofitted with an array of copper SMA wires with different cross-sectional areas. A new model is proposed for heat-treated copper SMAs and is validated based on published experimental results. A series of nonlinear finite element analyses are then performed on the wall for the purpose of assessing the SMA device retrofitting capabilities. Simulation results show an improvement of the wall response for the case of monotonic and quasi-static cyclic loadings.

Epitaxial yttrium-stabilized HfO$_2$ thin films were deposited on p-type (100) Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition at a relatively lower substrate temperature of 550. Transmission electron microscopy observation revealed a fixed orientation relationship between the epitaxial film and Si; that is, (100)Si.(100)HfO$_2$ and [001]Si/[001]HfO$_2$. The film/Si interface is not atomically flat, suggesting possible interfacial reaction and diffusion, X-ray photoelectron spectrum analysis also revealed the interfacial reaction and diffusion evidenced by Hf silicate and Hf-Si bond formation at the interface. The epitaxial growth of the yttrium stabilized HfO$_2$ thin film on bare Si is via a direct growth mechanism without involoving the reaction between Hf atoms and SiO$_2$ layer. High-frequency capacitance-voltage measurement on an as-grown 40-A yttrium-stabilized HfO$_2$ epitaxial film yielded an dielectric constant of about 14 and equivalent oxide thickness to SiO$_2$ of 12 A. The leakage current density is 7.0${\times}$ 10e-2 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 1V gate bias voltage.

The purpose of this paper is to present the analysis of propagating and evanescent waves in functionally graded (FG) nanoplates with the consideration of nonlocal effect. The analytical integration nonlocal stress expansion Legendre polynomial method is proposed to obtain complete dispersion curves in the complex domain. Unlike the traditional Legendre polynomial method that expanded the displacement, the presented polynomial method avoids employing the relationship between local stress and nonlocal stress to construct boundary conditions. In addition, the analytical expressions of numerical integrations are presented to improve the computational efficiency. The nonlocal effect, inhomogeneity of medium and their interactions on wave propagation are studied. It is found that the nonlocal effect and inhomogeneity of medium reduce the frequency bandwidth of complex evanescent Lamb waves, and make complex evanescent Lamb waves have a higher phase velocity at low attenuation. The occurrence of intersections of propagating Lamb wave in the nonlocal homogeneous plate needs to satisfy a smaller Poisson's ratio condition than that in the classical elastic theory. In addition, the inhomogeneity of medium enhances the nonlocal effect. The conclusions obtained can be applied to the design and dynamic response evaluation of composite nanostructures.

[ $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ ] films have been prepared on $LaAlO_3$ (100) single-crystal substrates by a metalorganic deposition using dichloroacetate precursors (DCA-MOD). Calcination conditions were varied in order to optimize the microstructure and the superconducting properties of YBCO film. Coated films were calcined at various temperatures ranging from $400{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ in flowing humid oxygen atmosphere. Ramping rate to calcination tempertures was $2.22^{\circ}C/min$. Conversion heat treatment was performed at $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in flowing Ar gas containing 1000 ppm oxygen with a humidity of 9.45%. Observations of surface and cross sectional SEM microstructure showed that the particle size in the calcined film increased in the range of 100-200 nm with heating rate and the calcination temperature. SEM EDS analysis showed that 13 a/o of chlorine was contained in the calcined film. It was also observed that the porosity increased with the heating rate and temperature. Porous microstructure was developed when YBCO films were prepared using porous calcined film. Dense microstructure and high $J_c$ over $1\;MA/cm^2$ was obtained when calcination was carried out at the temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ with a heating rate of $2.22^{\circ}C/min$.
It has been well known that a toroid is the inevitable shape for a high temperature superconducting (HTS) coil as a component of a large scale superconducting magnetic energy storage system (SMES) because it is the best option to minimize a magnetic field intensity applied perpendicularly to the HTS wires. Even though a perfect toroid coil does not have a perpendicular magnetic field, for a practical toroid coil composed of many HTS pancake coils, some type of perpendicular magnetic field cannot be avoided, which is a major cause of degradation of the HTS wires. In order to suggest an optimum design solution for an HTS SMES system, we need an accurate, fast, and effective calculation for the magnetic field, mechanical stresses, and stored energy. As a calculation method for these criteria, a numerical calculation such as an finite element method (FEM) has usually been adopted. However, a 3-dimensional FEM can involve complicated calculation and can be relatively time consuming, which leads to very inefficient iterations for an optimal design process. In this paper, we suggested an intuitive and effective way to determine the maximum magnetic field intensity in the HTS coil by using an analytic and statistical calculation method. We were able to achieve a remarkable reduction of the calculation time by using this method. The calculation results using this method for sample model coils were compared with those obtained by conventional numerical method to verify the accuracy and availability of this proposed method. After the successful substitution of this calculation method for the proposed design program, a similar method of determining the maximum mechanical stress in the HTS coil will also be studied as a future work.
This paper presents a novel finite element (FE) model for analyzing coupled flutter of long-span bridges using the commercial FE package ANSYS. This model utilizes a specific user-defined element Matrix27 in ANSYS to model the aeroelastic forces acting on the bridge, wherein the stiffness and damping matrices are expressed in terms of the reduced wind velocity and flutter derivatives. Making use of this FE model, damped complex eigenvalue analysis is carried out to determine the complex eigenvalues, of which the real part is the logarithm decay rate and the imaginary part is the damped vibration frequency. The condition for onset of flutter instability becomes that, at a certain wind velocity, the structural system incorporating fictitious Matrix27 elements has a complex eigenvalue with zero or near-zero real part, with the imaginary part of this eigenvalue being the flutter frequency. Case studies are provided to validate the developed procedure as well as to demonstrate the flutter analysis of cable-supported bridges using ANSYS. The proposed method enables the bridge designers and engineering practitioners to analyze flutter instability by using the commercial FE package ANSYS.
High-speed rail (HSR) has been in operation and development in many countries worldwide. The explosive growth of HSR has posed great challenges for operation safety and ride comfort. Among various technological demands on high-speed trains, vibration is an inevitable problem caused by rail/wheel imperfections, vehicle dynamics, and aerodynamic instability. Ride comfort is a key factor in evaluating the operational performance of high-speed trains. In this study, online monitoring data have been acquired from an in-service high-speed train for condition assessment. The measured dynamic response signals at the floor level of a train cabin are processed by the Sperling operator, in which the ride comfort index sequence is used to identify the train's operation condition. In addition, a novel technique that incorporates salient features of Bayesian inference and time series analysis is proposed for outlier detection and change detection. The Bayesian forecasting approach enables the prediction of conditional probabilities. By integrating the Bayesian forecasting approach with time series analysis, one-step forecasting probability density functions (PDFs) can be obtained before proceeding to the next observation. The change detection is conducted by comparing the current model and the alternative model (whose mean value is shifted by a prescribed offset) to determine which one can well fit the actual observation. When the comparison results indicate that the alternative model performs better, then a potential change is detected. If the current observation is a potential outlier or change, Bayes factor and cumulative Bayes factor are derived for further identification. A significant change, if identified, implies that there is a great alteration in the train operation performance due to defects. In this study, two illustrative cases are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method for condition assessment of high-speed trains.
PZT suspensions for photo-curable 3D printing were fabricated and their characteristics were evaluated. After mixing the PZT, photopolymer, photo-initiator, and dispersant for 10 min by using a high-shear mixer, the viscosity characteristics were investigated based on the powder content. To determine an appropriate dispersant content, the dispersant was mixed at 1, 3, and 5 wt% of the powder and a precipitation test was conducted for two hours. Consequently, it was confirmed that the dispersibility was excellent at 3 wt%. Through thermogravimetric analysis, it was confirmed that weight reduction occurred in the photopolymer between 120? and 500?, thereby providing a debinding heat treatment profile. The fabricated suspensions were cured using UV light, and the polymer was removed through debinding. Subsequently, the density and surface characteristics were analyzed by using the Archimedes method and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Consequently, compared with the theoretical density, an excellent characteristic of 97% was shown at a powder content of 87 wt%. Through X-ray diffraction analysis, it was confirmed that the crystallizability improved as the solid content increased. At the mixing ratio of 87 wt% powder and 13 wt% photo-curable resin, the viscosity was 3,100 cps, confirming an appropriate viscosity characteristic as a stereolithography suspension for 3D printing.
