Gas permeation and separation characteristics of ozone treated polysulfone (PSF) membranes were investigated. The PSF is one of the most widely used commercial membranes. Ozone treatment of the PSF membrane was performed for certain hours by continuously supplying 5 vol.% ozone-containing oxygen to the chamber, in which the membrane samples were charged. The permselectivity of PSF increased with ozone treatment time, and it was found that one and half hour was enough to ozone treatment. Increase in the selectivity of the membrane for He/$N_2$, HY$N_2$, O:J$N_2$, COJ$CH_4$ by ozone treatment was found to be due to decrease in the permeability of gases with larger molecular size such as $N_2$ and $CH_4$ The decrease in the permeability of gases with smaller molecular size was negligible. The increase in the selectivities of the PSF by ozone treatment would be due to decrease in the free volume of the polymer because of the oxygen complexes generated by the reaction between ozone and the polymer.
Polymeric membranes have been used in various applications and generally applied to the systems prevented from exterior exposure. However, polymer membranes for outdoor usages such as, an air quality monitoring and membrane reservoirs for the selective recovery of useful metals from seawater, have been newly developed. Thus it is required to investigate the properties of the membrane for the outdoor use and also studies of the accelerated UV exposure onto the polymeric membranes are essential to estimate their weatherability. Herein, we report on the thermal and mechanical properties, morphology changes, and color differences of the polysulfone anisotropic membranes and non-woven type polypropylene membranes with the accelerated UV exposure. Results showed that the effect of UV exposure on the membrane depend not only on the polymer used but also on the form of the membrane. This work can provide some of key informations of the membrane for outdoor use.
The self-designed membrane system was tested to examine the performance of the hollow fiber type polysulfone ultrafiltration(UF) membrane for the treatment of pure water(the 3rd treated water). The molecular weight cut-off's (MWCO) of the membranes used in this study were 5, 000 and 10, 000, respectively. The recovery rate, the ratio of permeate flow rate to the feed flow rate, increased as the temperature rose. The values of MWCO obtained in this study, using 2, 000 ppm polyethylene glycol and dextran solutions with various molecular weight, showed higher values than those suggested by SKI. Based on the results of the primary experiments, the water of the Gongji-stream, in which water quality is deteriorated by the inflow of domestic wastewater, was selected for the UF membrane test. Biological oxygen demand(BOD), total solids, and turbidity of the treated water had much lower values than those of the source water. Therefore, this study confirmed the possibility of the domestic water treatment using the hollow fiber type UF membrane.
Pervaporation membrane for butanol separation was prepared by hybrid process. Plasma treatment of commercial poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) membrane was attempted and combination of plasma treatment and PDMS solution coating on polysulfone, poly(ether imide) supports were also performed. Plasma treatment of PDMS membrane with hexane and silane group compounds was performed to increase the hydrophobicity of the surface, which enhanced the separation factor upto 12.5 at the expense of flux decrease down to $1.15kg/m^2{\cdot}hr$. Contact angle and relative sorption ratio were also related with hydrophobicity of the memrbane. Increase of PDMS prepolymer composition resulted in dense structure of coating layer with better separation factor. Effects of sequence of PDMS coating vs. plasma treatment were examined. It was found that plasma treatment with butanol and n-hexane plasma followed by PDMS coating showed better performance and vice versa for plasma treatment with hexamethyldisilane and hexamethyldisilazane.
The smear media possible to sampling and radiation detection was prepared and evaluated for the surface contamination using indirect method. The films were made by impregnating Cerium Activated Yttrium Silicate (CAYS) in a polysulfone membrane. The membranes used solution as a dimethylformamide (DMF) and methylene chloride (MC), polysulfone as a polymer matrix and CAYS as a inorganic scintillator. The proximity membranes were prepared with single- and double-layered structure. The solidified methods were immersion to the nonsolvent bath such at water and ethanol and solvent evaporation. The measurement of the photon produced by interaction with radiation and inorganic scintillator used a photomultiflier tube (PMT), amplifier, and counter. In the comparison with the low background alpha/beta counter, the counter rate using inorganic scintillator proximity membrane for the $\^$14/C surface contamination was about 50%. Also. the $^3$H counting results revealed that the prepared membranes were efficient to monitor the surface contaminated with the low energy be-ray emitter nuclides.

In this study, nano fibers with various physical properties were materialized by using a variety of polymers [PAN (Polyacrylonitrile), PU (Polyuretane), PSU (Polysulfone)] which are raw materials of dope solution manufactured for electrospinning and solvents [NMP (N-methyl-2 pyrrolidone), DMF (Dimethylformamide)] and evaluated characteristics of their flux and SS (Suspended Solids) separation and then ascertained application of manufactured fibers as separation membrane for water treatment. In this study, analysis of surface of manufactured material was carried out through SEM analysis to ascertain the cause of flux and SS separation performance by checking diameter, uniformity and straightness of fiber. If additive is used in manufacturing nano fiber water treatment separation membrane, it is expected to solve problems such as membrane fouling and mechanical strength and to be used as basic factor for manufacturing separation membrane with catalyst function added.
The surface of dense polysulfane films was modified through solvent treatment. The modification process consisted of dipping a film for one second in dimethylformamide and then immersing it Into a nonsolvent bath. After being solidified, the original transparent film transformed into an opaque white one, which is due to the light scattering on pores newly developed on the surface. The surface roughness entailing the pore formation was more explicit on a film coagulated by water as nonsolvent than on a film coagulated by isopropanol. The surface-modified films show the better pick-up efficiency than a conventional filter paper on the detaching of radioactive contaminants on the contaminated area. The pick-up efficiency of the film prepared by the water immersion process was superior to that of the film prepared in the isopropanol bath, which was consistent with the surface roughness result. The surface-modified films kept the dense inner structure, playing a major role preventing a possible secondary contamination during the pick-up process.
High performance polysulfone microfiltration membranes with a high were successfully prepared by vapor induced phase separation (VIPS) coupled with non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. Asymmetric Membranes were prepared with PSF/DMF/PVP/PEG/DMSO/water mixed solutions and water/IPA coagulant. PSF, DMF, PVP, PEG, DMSO, water was used as a membrane polymer, a solvent, a hydrophilic polymer additive, a polar protic liquid polymer, a polar aprotic nonsolvent, and a polar protic nonsolvent in the casting solution, respectively. The addition of polar aprotic nonsolvents, and polar protic nonsolvents is a convenient and effective method to control membrane structure. In order to control the morphology of polymeric membranes, the spontaneous emulsification induced by drawing water vapor into the exposed casting solution surface has been used. Control of the internal morphology of polymeric membranes by using mixed coagulation solution such as water and IPA is discussed in the present work. The pure water permeability, pore size distribution, surface hydrophilicity and membrane morphology were investigated. Due to the addition of DMSO to casting solution, the mean pore size increased almost $0.2{\mu}m$ and the water flux increased about 1000-1800 LMH.

During cleaning steps, ultrafiltration membranes are mechanically and chemically stressed. This may result in membrane degradations and failures. In this paper, polysulfone membranes were used to evaluate membrane deteriorations by commercial detergents in static conditions. Ageing of the membrane was simulated by immersing samples in solutions containing commercial detergents with various concentrations, temperatures and times defined by experimental designs. Indeed, an innovative approach in the chemical membranes ageing researches, based on methodological tools, was used in order to achieve significant ageing experiments without using an accelerated ageing protocol. The macroscopic changes were monitored by permeability measurements and mechanical strength tests coupled with a microscopic characterization by ATR-FTIR and HRSEM. The present work details results obtained for three commercial detergents: an alkaline, an acidic and an enzymatic detergent. It was found that the detergents used in the industrial advised conditions (concentration, temperature and time of contact) were not detrimental for membrane properties (permeability and elongation at break) and so for the quality of the produced water. Over the industrial cumulated time of contact, different ageing effects can be observed and compared with the ones induced by NaOCl.
Protein affinity membranes were prepared via coating of chitosan gel on the porous flat and hollow-fiber polysulfone membranes, followed by the immobilization of the reactive dye (Cibacron Blue 3GA) to the chitosan gel. Maximum protein binding capacity of these affinity membranes was about 70 $\mu{g/cm}^2$. Using the affinity flat membrane module, the elution chromatography of human serum albumin (HSA) was performed to determine the optimum condition of eluent buffer. The optimum condition of eluent was the universal buffer solution of 0.06 M concentration containing 1 M KCl at pH 10. For the frontal chromatography of HSA using the flat module, the dynamic protein binding capacity was rapidly decreased from the equilibrium values with increasing flow rate and HSA concentration of the loading solution. However, in the case of hollow-fiber module, the dynamic binding capacity was maintained an equilibrium value without depending on the operating conditions. These results showed that the hollow-fiber module was more effective than the flat module as an affinity chromatography column.
