  • In this paper, we have investigated the degradation of shed materials of outdoor insulators by UV-radiation by using corona-charging and XPS analysis. The accumulated charges on polymeric surface having intrinsic hydrophobic property have a negative impact on retaining its hydrophobicity. Therefore, shorter decay times of surface charges are preferred. The surface voltage decay on UV-treated silicone rubber and EPDM show a different decay trend with UV treated time. From the XPS analysis, the oxidized groups of silica-like structure in silicone rubber increase with UV treatment time. For EPDM, the oxidized carbon groups of C=O, O=C-O increase as elapse of UV radiation time. These oxidized surface for each material have different electrostatic characteristics, so deposited charges may be expected to have different impacts on their surface hydrophobicity. The degradation mechanism based on our results is discussed.

  • Radiation technology is an effective way for regulating polymeric materials to physicochemical and mechanical properties. New polymeric hydrogels based on vinyl ethers have been synthesized by the ${\gamma}$-initiated polymerization method. In this paper, we have studied the effect of radiation on mechanical and electrochemical properties of new rubber-like polymeric composite materials based on poly (vinyl ether of ethyleneglycol: PVEEG).

  • Thiol-ene polymerization is a versatile tool for several applications. Here we report the preparation of epoxide groups containing thiol-ene photocurable polymeric support and the covalent immobilization of ${\alpha}$-amylase onto these polymeric materials. The morphology of the polymeric support was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) coupled with SEM was used to explore the chemical composition. The polymeric support and the immobilization of the enzyme were characterized by FTIR analysis. SEM-EDS and FTIR results showed that the enzyme was successfully covalently attached to the polymeric support. The immobilization efficiency and enzyme activity of ${\alpha}$-amylase were examined at various pH (5.0-8.0) and temperature ($30-80^{\circ}C$) values. The storage stability and reusability of immobilized ${\alpha}$-amylase were investigated. The immobilization yield was $276{\pm}1.6$ mg per gram of polymeric support. Enzyme assays demonstrated that the immobilized enzyme exhibited better thermostability than the free one. The storage stability and reusability were improved by the immobilization on this enzyme support. Free enzyme lost its activity completely within 15 days. On the other hand, the immobilized enzyme retained 86.7% of its activity after 30 days. These results confirm that ${\alpha}$-amylase was successfully immobilized and gained a more stable character compared with the free one.

  • Activated carbons (ACs) are widely used in adsorption for the removal of gaseous and aqueous pollutants[1]. Although a wide range of carbonaceous materials can be converted into ACs, the coal and lingocellulosic materials are the most commonly used starting materials for the production of commercial ACs. Recently, there are a quite large number of studies regarding the preparation of ACs from various polymeric materials because of high carbon yield and low ash content In this work, ACs are prepared from polystyrene (PS) by chemical activation with potassium hydroxide and the effect of the KOH-to-PS ratio to adsorption of ammonia is investigated. • The fourteen different electrodes coated with polymeric lipid membrane were evaluated to selectively monitor the sweet, salty, sour and bitter tastes, and umami. The polymeric lipid membrane consisted of the three components, or polymer matrix, plasticizer and electroactive material, the compositional ratio of which was 1:1.25:1. Herein, the 14 different electroactive materials were used. Sucrose, NaCl, citric acid, caffeine and MSG were used as standard materials of sweet, salty, sour and bitter tastes, and umami. The linear responses of each electrode regarding 5 tastes were analyzed by means of the correlation coefficient between electric potential difference and concentration of a taste material when the linearity was based on a linear model and a thermodynamic model, respectively. As fur salty taste, the electrode coated with valinomycin had a selective linearity at the significance level of 0.01. For monitoring sweet taste, the electrode with oleylamine and the electrode with the mixture of tai-n-octylmethylammonium chloride and dioctylphosphate (2:8) showed the significant linearities at the levels of 0.05 and 0.10, respectively.

  • Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are one of attractive energy conversion and storage system based on high theoretical specific capacity and energy density with low costs. However, volatile nature of elemental sulfur is one of critical problem for their practical acceptance in industry because it considerably affects electrode uniformity during electrode manufacturing. In this work, polymeric sulfur composite consisting of ionic liquid (IL) are suggested to reduce volatility nature of elemental sulfur, resulting in better processibility of the Li-S cell. According to systematic spectroscopic analysis, it is found that polymeric sulfur is consisting of repeating units combining with elemental sulfur and volatility of them is negligible even at high temperature. In addition, the IL-embedded polymeric sulfur shows moderate cycle performance compared to the cell with elemental sulfur. From these results, it is found that the IL-embedded polymeric sulfur composite is applicable cathode candidate for the Li-S cell based on their excellent non-volatility as well as their superior electrochemical performance.

  • The green body of WC-Co cemented carbides containing polymeric binders such as paraffin, polyethylene glycol (PEG), and polyvinyl acetate (PVA) are prepared. The green density of the WC-Co cemented carbides increases with the addition of binders, with the exception of PVA, which is known to be a polar polymeric substance. The green strength of the WC-Co cemented carbides improves with the addition of paraffin and a mixture of PEG400 and PEG4000. In contrast, the green strength of the WC-Co does not increase when PEG400 and PEG4000 is added individually. The compressive strength of the green body increases to 14 MPa, and the machinability of the green body improves when more than 4-6 wt% paraffin and a mixture of PEG400 and PEG4000 is used. Simultaneously, the sintered density of WC-Co is as high as 99% relative density, similar to a low binder addition of 1-2 wt%.
