  • Carbon fibers are a new breed of high-strength materials which have been described as a fiber containing at least 90% carbon obtained by the controlled pyrolysis of appropriate fibers. Carbon fiber composites are ideally suited to applications where strength, stiffness, lower weight, and outstanding fatigue characteristics are critical requirements. They also can be used in the occasion where high temperature, chemical inertness and high damping are important. In recent decades, carbon fibers have found wide applications in commercial and civilian aircraft, recreational, industrial, and transportation markets. Therefore, understanding the basic structure, synthesis and physicochemical properties of carbon fibers is very important to apply them as a precursor of above applications. This review paper discuss the general information and manufacture technique of carbon fibers used for improving the performance of composite materials in various industries for the present.

  • Borazine (B3N3H6) as an inorganic analogue of benzene was synthesized by reaction of cheap raw materials (NaBH4 and (NH4)2SO4), and by using simple glass reaction apparatus in a scale up to 20 g per run with highly improved yield over 50%. It appears that synthesis of borazine is competing with formation of poly(aminoborane) as an inorganic analogue of polyethylene. The synthesized borazine and its polymerized product were characterized by comparison with products obtained from a commercial one. Bulk pyrolysis of the borazine polymer to 1500 ℃ produced a pure boron nitride (BN) with 75% ceramic yield, which displayed good oxidation resistance under dry air.

  • The most common cause of death in fires is the inhalation of noxious gases rather than thermal injury. Carbon monoxide is well-known toxic component in fire atmospheres. However, the importance of hydrogen cyanide(HCN) as a toxic agent in the fire related fatalities(FRF) is under discussion. HCN is known to be produced in fires involving by the pyrolysis of polyacrylonitril (PAN) and other nitrogen-containing polymer. (omitted)

  • The SiC-based ceramic nanopatterns were prepared by placing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold from DVD master on the spincoated polyvinylsilaeane (PVS) or allylhydridopolycaybosilane (AHPCS) as ceramic precursors to fabricate line pattern via UV-nanoimprint lithography (UV-NIL), and subsequent pyrolysis at $800^{\circ}C$ in nitrogen atmosphere. As the dimensional change of polymeric and ceramic patterns was comparatively investigated by AFM and SEM, the shrinkage in height was 38.5% for PVS derived pattern and 24.1% for AHPCS derived pattern while the shrinkage in width was 18.8% for PVS and 16.7% for AHPCS. It indicates that higher ceramic yield of the ceramic precursor resulted in less shrinkage, and the strong adhesion between the substrate and the pattern caused anisotropic shrinkage. This preliminary work suggests that NIL is a promissing route for fabricating ceramic MEMS devices, with the development on the shrinkage control.

  • The weight decrease curves of 18 kinds of polymers have been measured by thermobalance at the same condition where temperature is increased $1^{\circ}C$ per minutes under nitrogen or air atmosphere. The curves are further differentiated to obtain rate curve of weight decrease. Those curve offer a method to compare relative thermal stability, effects of oxygen or modes of thermal degradation of polymers qualitatively. The curves could be classified into following four types: Polystyrene, polymethylmethacrylate and acetal polymer belong to the first type. Those polymers depolymerize mainly into corresponding monomers, weight decrease curves are steepy up to perfect vaporization of polymers and rate curves show a relatively sharp peak. (Type I) Polyvinyl chloride represents the second type. This polymer decomposes with splitting off of hydrogen chloride. The thermogravimetric curve rises rapidly at first, then level off at the moderate weight decrease and gradually rises. Polyvinyl acetate also belongs to this class. (Type II) The modification of the second type is represented by polyester. The curve at the early stage is less steep, the leveling off at the next stage is less clear and the final rising of the curve is steeper than the normal second type. Polyamide, polyurethane, and polycarbonate belong to this type. (Type II') The thermal decomposition of the third type polymers is more complex than that of others. Various irregular chain scissions including side chain splitting and depolymerization to monomers occur simultaneously. The weight of the polymer decreases gradually and the rate curve does not show sharp peaks. Polyvinyl alcohol and diene polymers belong to this type. (Type III) Generally, polycondensation polymers are more stable toward heat than addition polymers and polymers having aromatic nucleus show good thermal stability. Polymers having tertiary carbon atoms such as polystyrene or polypropylene and acetal resin start decomposition under airatmosphere at the temprature below $50^{\circ}C$ or more of the temperature where the polymers start decomposition under nitrogen atmosphere.

  • Carbon fabric-reinforced silicon carbide composites (C/SiC) have attracted a considerable attention for high temperature structural application because of their outstanding oxidation resistance property and thermal shock resistance. In this study, we reported on the preparation of C/SiC composites by the polymer impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP) method. For this, polycarbosilane solution was impregnated into the carbon fabric and then cured by electron beam irradiation under argon atmosphere. Afterwards, the cured composite was pyrolyzed at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under argon atmosphere to produce the C/SiC composite. The porosity and density of the C/SiC composite were 13.5% and $2.44\;g/cm^3$, respectively, when the impregnation of the carbon fabric with the 30 wt% polycarbosilane solution conducted four times. In addition, in the isothermal experiment at $1500\;^{\circ}C$ in air for 5 h, the 95.9 wt% of the C/SiC composite was remained, indicating that the prepared C/SiC composite has a outstanding oxidation resistance.

  • For replacing Li metal at Lithium ion Battery(LIB) system, we used carbon powder material which prepared by Pyrolysis of Phenol resin as starting material. It became amorphous carbon by Pyrolysis through it's self condensation by thermal treatment. Amorphous carbon can be doped with Li intercalation and deintercalation because it has wide interlayer. However, it has a problem with structural destroy due to weak carbon-carbon bond. So, we used $ZnCl_2$ as the pore-forming agent. This inorganic salt was used together with the resin serves not only as the pore-forming agent to form open pores, which grow into a three-dimensional network structure in the cured material, but also as the microstructure-controlling agent to form a loose structure doped with bulky dopants. We used SEM in order to find to difference of structure, and can calculate the distance of interlayer by XRD analysis. CV test showed oxidation and reduction.
