We have studied the tilt angle generation on the homeotropic polyimide (PI) surface using a low intensity ion beam source as a function of incident angle. An excellent LC alignment of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on the PI surface with ion beam exposure for all incident angles was observed. The tilt angle of NLC on the homeotropic PI surface for all incident angles was from 90 to 88 degree was observed. Also the tilt angle of NLC on the homeotropic PI surface with ion beam exposure of 400 eV had a tendency to increase as ion beam energy incident angle become more instance from 45 degree. Finally, a good LC alignment thermal stability on the homeotropic PI surface with ion beam exposure can be achieved.

In large liquid crystal displays, the image quality in an oblique viewing direction is a crucial issue. From this perspective, 8-domain polymer-stabilized vertical alignment (PS-VA) mode has been developed to suppress the color shift in oblique viewing directions, compared to that in 4-domain PS-VA mode. To realize the 8-domain PS-VA, the four domains in a pixel are each divided into two regions, such that applying different electric potentials result in different tilt angles in these two regions, while keeping four azimuthal directions in each domain. However, applying different voltages in a pixel causes drawbacks, such as requiring additional processes to construct a capacitor and a transistor, which will further reduce the aperture ratio. Here we propose a different approach to form the 8-domain, by controlling surface polar anchoring energy and the width of patterned electrodes in two regions of a pixel. As a result, the gamma-distortion index (GDI), measured at an azimuthal angle of $0^{\circ}$, is reduced by about 23% and 8%, compared to that of a conventional 4-domain at polar angles of $30^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ respectively.
In this study, we investigated the generation of pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in a cell with oblique non-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surfaces. It was found that the monodomain alignment of the NLC is obtained with an angle of incidence of $70{\sim}85^{\circ}$ on PI surface. We consider that the monodomain alignment of NLC is attributed to anisotropic dispersion force due to photo-depolymerization of polymer on PI surfaces. Also, pretilt angle of NLC is generated about $3^{\circ}$ with an angle of incidence of $70{\sim}75^{\circ}$. It is considered that the pretilt angle generation in NLC is attributed to interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surfaces.
In this study, we have investigated the relationship between the generation of pretilt angle and the polarization component in cells with UV light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surface. It was found that the generated pretilt angle is about $1.4^{\circ}$ with S-polarized UV light irradiation of $75^{\circ}$ on PI surface; it may be attributed to the asymmetry triangular of polymer surface with oblique S-polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface. Also, we measured that the generated pretilt angle is about $2.0^{\circ}$ with oblique P polarized UV light irradiation of $75^{\circ}$ on PI surface. Consequently, we suggest that the generated pretilt angle of the NLC is attributed to the interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surface with oblique polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface.
We have investigated the generation of pretilt angle for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with rubbing alignment method on two kinds of polyimide (PI) surfaces using thin plastic substrates. The generated NLC pretilt angles on the pre-imidized type PI are about $3.8^{\circ}$ by the rubbing alignment method with thin plastic substrates, However, the pretilt angle measured at about $2.8^{\circ}$ lower on the polyamic acid type PI than by pre-imidized type PI surface with thin polymer film. The tilt angle increases as increasing curring temperature for making polyimide layer using polyamic acid type PI. It was concluded that pretilt angle in the polyimide surface is attributable to the increasing of imide rato.
We investigated the annealing effect on generating pretilt angle and aligning liquid crystal (LC) using the photo-depolymerization reaction in this study. In case of rubbing polyimide (PI) surface with the side chain, pretilt angle tends to increase with increasing the annealing time. It is considered because the steric interaction is increased by annealing which cause the side chain to come back to original position. For obliquely irradiating ultraviolet (UV) light on PI surface, pretilt angle shows to $0^{\circ}$ and is increased by annealing. The pretilt angle in rubbed PI surface is much higher than in photo-aligned PI surface. It is attributed to the steric interaction and the number of LC molecular arrangement on azimuthal direction. In addition. in case of obliquely irradiating UV light on PI surface. it showed LC alignment to increase by annealing. It can be regarded due to the fact that the re-alignment of LC molecule is improved to residual polymer direction by annealing.
To elucidate the liquid crystal(LC) molecules alignment mechanism, it is important to determine the molecular orientation of the rubbed polymer surface molecules that directly contact with LC molecules. In this work, the molecular orientation on a rubbed surface of polyimide (SE-3310, Nissan) film has been studied by polarized FTIR absorption spectroscopy. It has been found that molecular chain on the rubbed surface of polymide film are oriented along the rubbing direction and are tilted up on an average by 5.0$^{\circ}$. In the SHG(Second Harmonic Generation) measurement, the pretilt angle of molecular chain on the poylmide fim was 4.6$^{\circ}$ fro, the surface plane. And the pedit angle of liquid crystal (ZLI-2293, Merck) molecules measured by crystal rotation method was 5.4$^{\circ}$in the same rubbing condition.
We synthesised a novel photo-alignment material of PCEMA (poly(cinnamolyethyl methacrylate)) on photo-dimerization reaction. Next we investigated the electro-optical (EO) characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with linearly polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on PCEHA surface. The excellent voltage-transmittance characteristics of photo-aligned TN-LCD on PCEMA surface were obtained. The threshold voltage of photo-aligned TN-LCD decreases with increasing the UV light irradiation time on PCEMA surface. Also, the response time of photo-aligned TN-LCD on PCEMA surface is almost the same as rubbing-aligned TN-LCD.

Thin films of poly(vinyl cinnamate) (PVCi) were prepared on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass and silicon substrates by conventional spin coating and subsequent drying process. The thicknesses of the films ranged 50-120 nm. The films' surface was treated by rubbing, ultraviolet exposure or their combinations in various ways with changing rubbing strength and exposure dose. These films were examined in detail in the aspects of surface morphology and chain orientation. Further, the anchoring and orientation behaviors of liquid crystals on the film surfaces were investigated. All the results will be discussed in detail.
Aligning capabilities for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using a in-situ photodimerization method on various Photo-crosslinkable Polyimide (Pl) based polymer and blending photopolymer surfaces were investigated. High pretilt angle of the NLC can be measured by obliquely polarized UV exposure on a photo-crosslinkable polyimide based polymer surface containing biphenyl (BP), decyl (de), and cholesteryl (chol) group, respectively. However, the low pretilt angle of the NLC was measured by obliquely polarized UV exposure on the blending photopolymer (Pl and cinnamate materials) surfaces. Consequently, the pretilt angle of the NLC generated on the photo-crosslinkable polyimide based polymer surfaces using the in-situ photodimerization method was higher than that of the blending photopolymers.
