  • In this paper, the inorganic-organic thin film encapsulation layer was newly adopted to protect the organic layer from moisture and oxygen. Using the electron beam, Sputter and Spin-Coater system, the various kinds of inorganic and organic thin-films were deposited onto the Ethylene Terephthalate(PET) and their interface properties between organic and inorganic layer were investigated. In this investigation, the SiON and Polyimide(PI) layer showed the most suitable properties. Under these conditions, the WVTR(water vapour transition rate) for PET can be reduced from level of 0.57 g/$m^2$/day (bare subtrate) to $1{\times}10^{-5}$ /$m^2$/day after application of a SiON and Polyimide layer. These results indicates that the SiON/PI/SiON/PI/PET barrier coatings have high potential for flexible organic light-emitting diode(OLED) applications.

  • We have studied the liquid crystal alignment properties for various alignment methods on the homogeneous polyimide surface. Suitable liquid crystal alignment for one-side alignment cell on the polyimide surface by all alignment method was observed. Highly pre-tilt angle of the NLC for both-side rubbing cell was measured. But, low pre-tilt angle of the NLC for one-side ion beam and UV irradiation cell was observed. We consider that the pre-tilt angle of NLC for one-side ion beam and UV irradiation on the PI surface is lower than that of the PI surface with rubbing. Also, the suitable transmittance-voltage curves for the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the PI surface with one-side UV irradiation were measured. Also, good response time characteristics of the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the polyimide surface with one-side UV irradiation can be measured.

  • Previous studies have reported on the mechanical robustness and chemical stability of flexible amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) on plastic substrates both in flat and curved states. In this study, we investigate how the polyimide (PI) substrate affects hydrogen concentration in the a-IGZO layer, which subsequently influences the device performance and stability under bias-temperature-stress. Hydrogen increases the carrier concentration in the active layer, but it also electrically deactivates intrinsic defects depending on its concentration. The influence of hydrogen varies between the TFTs fabricated on a glass substrate to those on a PI substrate. Hydrogen concentration is 5% lower in devices on a PI substrate after annealing, which increases the hysteresis characteristics from 0.22 to 0.55 V and also the threshold voltage shift under positive bias temperature stress by 2 ${\times}$ compared to the devices on a glass substrate. Hence, the analysis and control of hydrogen flux is crucial to maintaining good device performance and stability of a-IGZO TFTs.

  • In this study, we intended to investigate aging effect of polyimide prepared by VDPD(vapor deposition polymerized method). The prepared polymide was treated by the oxygen and argon gas plasma. And we evaluated the polyimide treated by plasma from contact angle, surface leakage current, FT-IR and SEM. We know that the structure of polyimide at surface are changed to amide structure by plasma treating. It seems that strong energy of plasma causes breaking the molecular chin of the polyimide. And surface roughness increases with plasma treating time increased and sequentially the wettability and leakage current increases.

  • Aluminuim doped zinc oxide(ZnO:AL)Films have been prepared on Polyimide(PI) and Coming 7059 glass substrates by r.f. magnetron sputtering method. The structural of the ZnO:Al films were studied in accordance with various deposition R.F power and working pressure by XRD, SEM. And The electrical and optical properties of ZnO:Al films were characterized by Hall effect and UN visible spectrophotometer measurements, ZnO:Al films had were hexagonal wurtzite structure and dominant c-axis orientation. The R.f power and working pressure for optimum condition to fabricate the transparent conductive films using a PI substrate were 2 mTorr and 100W, respectively. The resistivity of the ZnO:Al films prepared under this condition were $9.6{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$. The optical transmittance of 400nm thick films at 550nm is ${\sim}85 %$.

  • Electro-optical (EO) characteristics of in-plane switching (IPS) cell on the polyimide surface using obliquely ion beam (IB) exposure as new ion beam (IB) type system (DuoPIGatrion ion source). A good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the polyimide surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned IPS-cell on poly imide surface ; the stable VT curve in the ion-beam-aligned IPS cell on a poly imide (PI) surface with ion beam exposure using new type IB equipment was obtained. and the fast response time in the ion-beam-aligned IPS cell on a polyimide (PI) surface with ion beam exposure using new type IB equipment was obtained.

  • The effect of liquid crystal (LC) alignment on a homeotropic polyimide (PI) surface induced by ion beam (IB) irradiation and rubbing process was studied. LC alignment was not affected by IB irradiation with an exposure time of 10 s, and an IB irradiation with an exposure time of 60 s more effectively oriented the LCs on the PI layer than the rubbing process. It was assumed that the LC alignment depended on the C-O bonds created from the C=O bonds on the PI surface broken by IB irradiation after an exposure time of 60 s, which resulted in a strong surface energy that transformed the homeotropic LC alignment to homogeneous states.

  • We have studied the effect of the mesogenic core of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) for polar (out-of-plane tilt) anchoring strength and surface order parameter on rubbed polyimide (PI) films. The order of polar anchoring strength for NLCs on rubbed PI films is 5CB > PCH5 > CCH5. This order is the same for all rubbing strengths investigated. The surface order parameter for NLCs is 5CB > PCH-5 > CCH5 on rubbed PI films. From these results, we suggest that the polar anchoring strength is strongly related to the surface order parameter.

  • The polar anchoring strength and surface ordering in a NLC, 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface containing trifluoromethyl moiety were studied. The large extrapolation length de of 5CB for washing process of water was measured at RS=114 mm. The polar anchoring energy of 5CB on the rubbed PI surface is decreased by the washing process. Also, the polar anchoring energy of 5CB increases with the rubbing strength on the PI surface. The surface ordering of 5CB for all washing processes is smaller than the non-washing process; it is attributed to the washing process.

  • We investigated response characteristics of liquid crystal display(LCD) with different operating mode of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) such as $45^{\circ}$twist nematic (TN), $67.3^{\circ}$TN and ECB(electrical controlled birefringence) on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface. The three kinds of LCD operating mode obtain stable EO performance. Low transmittances of the $45^{\circ}$TN and $67.3^{\circ}$TN cell on the rubbed PI surface were achieved by using low cell gap d. The fast response time of ECB cell among the three kinds of LCD operating mode was measured.
