  • An efficient Newton-GMRES algorithm is presented for computing two-dimensional steady compressible viscous flows on unstructured hybrid meshes. The scheme is designed on cell-centered finite volume method which accepts general polygonal meshes. Steady-state solution is obtained with pseudo-transient continuation strategy. The preconditioned, restarted general minimum residual(GMRES) method is employed in matrix-free form to solve the linear system arising at each Newton iteration. The incomplete LU fartorization is employed for the preconditioning of linear system. The Spalart-Allmars one equation turbulence model is fully coupled with the flow equations to simulate turbulence effect. The accuracy, efficiency and robustness of the presently developed method are demonstrated on various test problems including laminar and turbulent flows over flat plate and airfoils.

  • When a mobile robot moves around autonomously without man-made landmarks, it is essential to recognize the placement of surrounding objects especially for current position estimation, obstacle avoidance, or homing into the work station. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to recognize the floor paln for indoor mobile robot navigation using ultrasonic time-of-flight method. We model the floor plan as a collection of polygonal plane objects and recognize the floor plan by locating edges and vertices of the objects. The direction is estimated by the patterns of transmission beam and reception sensitivity of the ultrasonic transducer, and the distance is estimated by the correlation detection method. We show the validity of the proposed approach through experimental results and discuss the resolution and the accuracy of the estimation of direction and distance.

  • A theoretical formula that is based on the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) is proposed for computing sound diffraction by multiple wedges, barriers, and polygonal-like shapes. The formula can treat both convex and concave edges, where edges mayor may not be inter-connected. Comparisons of theoretical predictions with other results done by the BEM or experiments for scaled model confirm the accuracy of the present formula. Numerical examples such as double wedges and doubly inclined barrier show that when there exist several diffraction paths for given source and receiver positions, the insertion loss is dominated by the diffraction associated with the shortest propagation path.

  • In this paper we propose a new method for the recognition of 2-D partially occluded objects. The border of the object is transformed to a curve in arc length-accumulated interior angle plane. The transformed curve of an image is partitioned so that each segment is bounded by the concave interior angles. In order to tolerate shape distortion due to the polygonal approximation of the boundary of the object a group of feature points of the input image are matched with those of model views. The estimation method for positions and orientations of the identified objects objects is presented.

  • The Snakes and GVF used to find object edges dynamically have assigned their initial contour arbitrarily. If the initial contours are located in the neighboring regions of object edges, Snakes and GVF can be close to the true boundary. If not, these will likely to converge to the wrong result. Therefore, this paper proposes a new initialization of Snakes and GVF using convex hull approximation, which initializes the vertex of Snakes and GVF as a convex polygonal contour near object edges. In simulation result, we show that the proposed algorithm has a faster convergence to object edges than the existing methods. Our algorithm also has the advantage of extracting whole edges in real images.

  • Recent days composite bridge dock is gaining attraction due to many advantages such as light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance, and high durability. In this study, composite deck models of hat, box and triangular section type wore fabricated with VARTM Process. For these models, three point flexural tests wore carried out both in strong and weak axis. The experimental results were compared with each other to determine efficient section profile. It has been demonstrated that composite sandwich deck has strong potentials to be used as bridge deck in the new construction and rehabilitation works.

  • Reverse engineering has been widely used for the shape reconstruction of an object without CAD data and the measurement of clay or wood models fur the development of new products. To generate a surface from measured points by a laser scanner, typical steps include the scanning of a clay or wood model, the generation of compatible input curves, the generation of a surface and manufacturing data like G code or STL file. A laser scanner has a great potential to get geometrical data of a model for its frost measuring speed and higher precision. The data from a laser scanner are composed of many line stripes of points including small spikes and noise. A new approach using automated surface generating algorithm is introduced to deal with problems during reverse engineering process. And the input data and the generated surface are represented in IGES format, thus can be supplied to other CAD/CAM software without any data manipulation.

  • This paper is studied for the recognition of occluded objects by fuzzy inference. The images are transformed a group of linear line segments, which is formed local features extracted from curvature points, using polygonal approximation. The features extracted from images are representes to the fuzzified data which is mapped into fuzzy concepts to represent the fuzziness, and the recognition of a model from scenes is performed by fuzzy inference using the production rulse which is generated from the model image. It is considered that the recognition results according to the change of degree of fuzziness in the experiments, and the experimental results for 30 scenes contained 120 models is obtained 92.5% of recognition rate.

  • To address the limitation of the commonly used steam curing of reactive powder concrete (SC-RPC) in engineering, a preparation technology of normal curing reactive powder concrete (NC-RPC) is proposed. In this study, an experimental comparative research on the mechanical properties of NC-RPC and SC-RPC under uniaxial tension is conducted. Under the premise of giving full play to the ultra-high performance of RPC, the paper tries to explore whether normal curing can replace steam curing. The results show that various mechanical indexes of NC-RPC (e.g., tensile strength, ultimate tensile strain, elastic modulus and deformation performance) could basically reach the mechanical index values in steam curing at 28d age, some performance is even better at a longer age. So it affirms the feasibility of normal curing. In this paper, the influence of normal curing age on the tensile properties of RPC is discussed, and the relationship between each index and age is introduced in detail. Based on the experimental data, the tensile mechanism of RPC is analyzed theoretically, and two kinds of tensile constitutive models for RPC are proposed, one is curvilinear model, and another one is polygonal line model. The validity of the two models is further verified by the test results of others.

  • The method to generate a digital elevation model(DEM) from contour lines causes a problem in which the low relief landform cannot be clearly presented due to the fact that it is significantly influenced by the expression of micro landform elements according to the interval of contours. Thus, this study attempts to develop a landcover burning method that recovers the micro relief landform of the DEM, which applies buffering and map algebra methods by inputting the elevation information to the landcover. In the recovering process of the micro landform, the DEM was recovered using the buffering method and elevation information through the map algebra for the landcover element for the micro landform among the primary DEM generation, making landcover map, and landcover elements. The recovering of the micro landform was applied based on stream landforms. The recovering of landforms using the buffering method was performed for the bar, which is a polygonal element, and wetland according to the properties of concave/convex through generating contours with a uniform interval in which the elevation information applied to the recovered landform. In the case of the linear elements, such as bank, road, waterway, and tributary, the landform can be recovered by using the elevation information through applying a map algebra function. Because the polygonal elements, such as stream channel, river terrace, and artificial objects (farmlands) are determined as a flat property, these are recovered by inputting constant elevation values. The results of this study were compared and analyzed for the degree of landform expression between the original DEM and the recovered DEM. In the results of the analysis, the DEM produced by using the conventional method showed few expressions in micro landform elements. The method developed in this study well described wetland, bar, landform around rivers, farmland, bank, river terrace, and artificial objects. It can be expected that the results of this study contribute to the classification and analysis of micro landforms, plain and the ecology and environment study that requires the recovering of micro landforms around streams and rivers.
