The effects of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on glucoamylase production in recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae were studied. By PEG addition, the cell growth was not affected. However, the glucoamylase production was increased in all range of PEG molecular weights and concentrations. The optimal molecular weight of PEG was 6000 and the optimal concentration was 1g/L. Using these optimals, the extracellular glucoamylase activity was 23% higher in PEG-containing medium than that in medium without PEG.
The purpose of this study was to develop a method for increasing the solubility of paclitaxel in water to reduce its toxicity and make the drug more feasible for chemotherapy. A series of highly water soluble paclitaxel polyethylene glycol (PEG) esters were synthesized and evaluated for their anti-tumor activity and toxicity. The solubility of 7-polyethylene glycol paclitaxel carbonate 5 was 840 mg/mL and the acute toxicity ($LD_{50}$) was 286 mg/kg. Because of its reduced toxicity, compound 5 showed a dramatic reduction of tumor volume without any loss of animals in long-term treatment (daily consecutive injections for 15 days).
Laccase catalyzes the oxidation and polymerization of aromatic compounds in the presence of molecular oxygen. Studies were conducted to characterize the use of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as an additive to keep up the enzymatic stability. The enzymatic activities highly remained and bisphenol A (BPA) was rapidly converted in the presence of 5 mg/l of PEC. These effects were accomplished with PEG of molecular weight 3,350. A linear relationship was found between the quantity of BPA to be converted $(10-120\;{\mu}M)$ and the optimum dose of PEC required for greater than $95\%$ conversion. This result suggests that it is the interaction between the PEG and the reaction products. In the optimum dose of PEG, the aeration of reaction mixture neither enhanced the conversion of BPA nor retarded the inactivation of the enzyme.
The tensile properties and color of fish meal film under various processing conditions were measured to obtain basic data for biodegradable Alaska Pollack meal protein isolate (APMPI) film. The tensile strength and the elongation of APMPI film were increased with casting volume of APMPI solution but those of APMPI film were weakened with the addition of glycerol amount as well as reduction of pH values. In case of adding various plasticizer, the tensile strength of film was increased in order as follows: sorbitol, polyethylene glycol and glycerol. The elongation was increased in order of polyethylene glycol, sorbitol and glycerol. The tensile strength of film increased with increment of APMPI concentration, but the elongation of film was not affected by APMPI concentration. The tensile strength of APMPI film was decreased with the increment of relative humidity but its elongation was increased with the increment of relative humidity, Not only lightness and yellowness of film added with sorbitol but also redness and total different color of film added with polyethylene glycol showed the highest value in Hunter color system.
To develop a $^{13}C-urea-containing$ capsule for more economic and sensitive diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection, the $^{13}C-urea-containing$ capsules were prepared with various additives such as polyethylene glycol, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulfate and citric acid. Their dissolution test and $^{13}C-urea$ Breath Test in human volunteers were then performed. Polyethylene glycol increased the initial dissolution rates of urea and difference ${\sigma}$$^{13}C$ values from $^{13}C-urea$, while microcrystalline cellulose and sodium lauryl sulfate decreased them. Irrespective of addition of citric acid, the compositions with polyethylene glycol showed higher values from $^{13}C-urea$ compared to a commercial 76 mg $^{13}C-urea-containing$ capsule due to higher initial dissolution rate. The capsules with 38 mg $^{13}C-urea$ and 1.9 mg polyethylene glycol, which showed higher Helicobacter pylori-positive value of about $8{\textperthousand}$ at 10 min, improved the sensitivity of $^{13}C-urea$ in human volunteers. Thus, the $^{13}C-urea-containing$ capsule with polyethylene glycol would be a more economical and sensitive preparation for diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection.
The processing conditions for producing and edible alginate film from sea tangle were investigated by measuring water vapor permeability (WVP), tensile properties and colors of film. The alginates were extracted with $3\%$ sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$) solution for 5 hrs, and the alginate films were prepared with extracted sodium alginates, D-gluconic acid lactone, $CaCO_3$ and various plasticizers, As the concentration of alginate in making the film was increased, the WVP and elongation of the film were decreased and the tensile strength was increased. The higher amount of plasticizer showed the higher WVP and elongation, and the order of various plasticizers in increasing the WVP and elongation of the film was glycerol, polyethylene glycol, and sorbitol. The addition of sorbitol in the film showed the highest value (89.57) in lightness of Hunter color system and the film added polyethylene glycol had the highest values (-1,12 and 11.4) in redness and yellowness.
In the polyethylene glycol/dextran aqueous two-phase systems, volume ratio was increased and partition coefficient was decreased with the increase of potyethylene glycol molecular weight and concentration. However the volume ratio was decreased and the partition coefficient was increased with the increase of dextran molecular weight. On the other hand, the volume ratio and the partition coefficient were decreased with the increase of dextran concentration. Continuous enzymatic hydrolysis of soluble starch with $\alpha$-amylase which was produced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens IF0 14141 was investigated in polyethylene glycol/dextran aqueous two-phase systems. Nonreacted soluble starch and $\alpha$-amylase were reused in these systems. $\alpha$-Amylase activity was maintained more than 100 hrs by recycling of $\alpha$-amylase from bottom of settler to reactor.

Biodegradable enzymes such as lipase and proteinase can hydrolyze not only fatty acid esters and triglycerides, but also aliphatic polyesters. We measured the biodegradability that biodegradable enzymes have an important role in the degradation of natural aliphatic poly material such as PLA, corn starch, and polyethylene glycol in the natural environment. However, we investigated on the biodegradability of PLA, PLA and Polyethylene acrylate blended, and PLAcoPolyethylene polymerized with PLA graft copolymer Polyethylene glycol acrylate. When prepared biodegradable polymers. the Mechanical properties of them were measured on Biodegradability, thermal properties, real time in-situ electrical monitoring of polymers resin. Therefore BOD and biodegradation of PLAcoPolyethylene was graft copolymerized with PLA and polyethylene acrylate were measured at a lower rate than the other samples.
Agrobacterium tumefaciens induces cancerous growths called crown galls at wound sites on dicotyledonous plants. A large plasmid called Ti plasmid is responsible for virulence. Upon tumor induction, part of the plasmid, termed T-DNA, becomes integrated into plant genome and its genetic sequences are expressed. These properties allow Ti plasmids to be used as gene vectors in plants. Several in vitro methods for the transfer of Ti plasmid into plant cell have been developed. One of them is the treatment of bacterial spheroplasts and plant protoplasts mixture with polyethylene glycol that is generally used as fusogen in cell-to-cell fusion. Several workers investigated the interaction of bacterial spheroplasts with plant protoplasts in the presence of polyethylene glycol and suggested that the interaction is not fusion but endocytosis. In this report we observed the interaction of Agrobacterium tumefaciens spheroplasts with Nicotiana tabacum protoplasts by electron microscope. Agrobacterium tumefaciens spheroplasts and Nicotiana tabacum protoplasts were prepared and mixed in the presence of polyethylene glycol and high pH-high $Ca^{2+}$ buffer. Then the interaction of the spheroplasts with the protoplasts was examined by transmission electron microscope. After the treatment of polyethylene glycol the spheroplasts adhered to the surface of the protoplasts and then they were engulfed by the protoplasts. After the high pH-high $Ca^{2+}$ buffer treatment the engulfed spheroplasts lost their cell integrity. No fusion process was observed. Thus all these observations suggest that the introduction process of Agrobacterium tumefaciens spheroplasts into Nicotiana tabacum protoplasts with the aid of polyethylene glycol is endocytosis.
