  • We proposed new and easy fabrication method of micro-nano hierarchical structures for synthetic dry adhesives and conducted feasibility tests of alignment characteristics of nano-materials in the microstructures by capillary effect. Candidates of fabrication conditions were selected based on the degree of cure and viscosity of mixtures of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which were measured with respect to the fabrication conditions. Scanning electron microscopy images of cross sections of MWCNT-PDMS microstructures were analyzed. MWCNT alignment in microstructures was better when fabrication temperature and degree of cure at fabricating start were lower, but areal density of MWCNTs was little affected by fabrication conditions.

  • This paper presents the fabrication method of a micro-riblet film (MRF) using MEMS technology and the experimental results of the drag reduction of an airfoil with MRFs. Riblets having grooved surface in the streamwise direction has been proven as an effective passive control technique of the drag reduction. A V-grooved pattern on (100) silicon wafer is etched with anisotropic bulk micromachining. The MRF is completed by replicating the V-grooved pattern with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Experiments were performed by measuring a velocity field behind the trailing edge of a NACA 0012 airfoil with and without MRFs in a closed-type subsonic wind tunnel using particle image velocimetry (PlV) technique. The MRF provides about 3.8 % drag reduction compared to the drag on a smooth airfoil when the freestream velocity of wind tunnel is 3.3 m/s.

  • Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a widely used material for replicating micro-structures because of its transparency, deformability, and easy fabrication. At the nanoscale, however, it is hard to fill a nanohole template with uncured PDMS. This paper introduces several simple methods by changing the surface energy of a nanohole template and PDMS elastomer for replicating 100nm-scale structures. In the case of template, pristine anodic aluminum oxide (AAO), hydrophobically treated AAO, and hydrophillically treated AAO are used. For the surface energy change of the PDMS elastomer, a hydrophilic additive and dilution solvent are added in the PDMS prepolymer. During the molding process, a simple casting method is used for all combinations of the treated template and modified PDMS. The nanostructured PDMS surface was investigated with a scanning electron microscope after the molding process for verification.

  • We report a simple method for preparing hydrophobic mesoporous silica and its use as a pre-concentrating agent of gas analytes. Hydrophobic mesoporous silica was prepared by coating PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) thin layer on commercial mesoporous silica with thermal deposition method in a sealed chamber. By using this method, we were able to coat PDMS layer on inner-walls of pores larger than 15 nm. Also, contact angle measured on a surface consisting of PDMS-coated mesoporous silica exceeded $150^{\circ}$, implying that the surface has high water repellency. Pre-concentration ability of PDMS-coated mesoporous silica and baremesoporous silica was tested under dry and humid conditions. Adsorption and molecular desorption of gas analytes was much enhanced by PDMS-coating on mesoporous silica under both dry and humid conditions. Therefore we suggest that PDMS-coated mesoporous silica can be an efficient pre-concentration agent in order to enhance sensitivity of various detectors.

  • Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)-co-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)(PHEMA) was prepared and the degree of swelling of solvents into the polymers was examined. It was confirmed that the solubility parameter of PHEMA homopolymer is 26 (J/cm3)1/2. Ethanol was significantly absorbed into copolymers containing large amount of PHEMA, while tetrahydrofuran was effectively absorbed into copolymers containing large amount of PDMS. Absorption of polar solvents into the copolymers were increased with the increase of PDMS content. The model drug, crystal violet (CV), was more absorbable into PDMS-HPEMA copolymers than PHEMA homopolymer. Absorption of CV was decreased with the increase of PDMS content of the copolymers.

  • The recovery of trace volatile organic components from water by pervaporation was investigated. Permeation experiments through homogeneous polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) membrane was carried out and the effect of feed concentrations and membrane thicknesses on the permeation characteristics were investigated. A solution-diffusion model is used to describe the pervaporation transport mechanism. In homogeneous PDMS membrane it appeared that the selectivities of MEK and toluene are constant, and that organic flux has a linear relationship with feed concentration. These results indicate that the coupling effects between organics were negligible. The selectivity of PDMS membranes is invariant with respect to the membrane thickness. The intrinsic membrane permeability of organic components determined by using a solution-diffusion model. Comparing with various composite type membrane, the membrane using PEG treated nonwoven fabric as sublayer showed the best performance in VOC recovery by pervaporation.

  • In the present study, we constructed a membrane inlet assembly for selective permeation of volatile airborne organic compounds for subsequent analysis by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The time-dependent diffusion of analytes through a $75\;{\mu}m$ thick polydimethylsiloxane membrane was measured by monitoring the ion signal after a step change in the sample concentration. The results fit well to a non-steady-state permeation equation. The diffusion coefficient, response time, and sensitivity were determined experimentally for a range of polar (halogenated) and nonpolar (aromatic) compounds. We found that the response times for several volatile organic compounds were greatly influenced by the alkyl chain length as well as the size of the substituted halogen atoms. The detection limits for benzene, ethylbenzene, and 2-propanol were 0.2 ppm, 0.1 ppm, and 3.0 ppm by volume, respectively, with a linear dynamic range greater than three orders of magnitude. These results indicate that the membrane inlet/time-of-flight mass spectrometry technique will be useful for a wide range of applications, particularly for in situ environmental monitoring.

  • Magnetic beads (Dynabeads$^{(R)}$) embedded in ~1 micron size polystyrene beads bearing surface carboxylic acid groups were modified with aminobenzyl ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (ABEDTA) to concentrate or separate metal ions using pH gradients on micro and nano scales. The immobilization of ABEDTA was achieved by amide formation. The presence of the metal chelating functional group in the fully deprotonated form was confirmed by FT-IR. The chelation efficiency of beads was tested by determining metal ions in supernatant using GFAAS when pH gradients from 3 to 7. Mixtures of Cu and Mg and of Cd and Mn (at 10 ng/mL of metal) were separated as the difference in formation constant with the functional group of ABEDTA. The separation was repeated twice with relative standard deviation of <18%. A polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchip column packed with EDTA-coated magnetic beads was optimized to concentrate metal ion for practical applications by eluting a Cu solution of micro scale at pH 3.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the influences or the vinyl content of polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) and type of silica on the electrical and mechanical properties of silicone rubber far high voltage insulation. When the content of vinyl group was increased, cross-linking density and hardness were increased, and tensile strength, volume resistivity and tracking resistance were improved. The mechanical and electrical properties of silicone rubber reinforced with fumed silica were higher than those of silicone rubber reinforced with precipitated silica. It was found that the electrical and mechanical properties of silicone rubber were influenced greatly by the water contents of silica.
