  • The purpose of this study is to figure out the effects of nature-friendly environmental education program on environmental pollution prevention and practice attitude of children. To achieve this, a survey was experimentally carried out on total 43 five-year old class children in Chungcheong Province-based preschools. They were classified into the experimental group made up of 12 male children and 10 female children, and the control group made up of 12 male children and 9 female children. The results of this study are as follows. First, there was no statistically significant difference in environmental pollution prevention and practice attitude between the control group. And there was an increase of general environmental pollution prevention and practice attitude in the experimental group, showing a statistically significant difference. Second, there was a decrease and an increase of the 'concern about nature', 'aesthetical experience' and 'emotional stability' by each sub-factor of environmental pollution prevention and practice attitude in the control group and the experimental group, respectively, showing a significant effect. And there was an increase of 'activities to prevent environmental pollution' and 'practice attitude' in both control group and the experimental group, showing a significant effect. As stated above, the nature-friendly environmental education program for children had positive effects on the environmental pollution prevention and practical attitude improvement. Consequently, it is proven that this program is useful for improving the environmental pollution prevention and practice attitude of children through education for repetitive life attitude of natural preciousness from early childhood.

  • In this paper, we propose a simplified pollution adaptive mesh generation algorithm using singular elements. The algorithm based on the element pollution error indicator concentrate on boundary nodes. The automatic mesh generation method is followed by either a node-relocation or a node-insertion method. The boundary node relocation phase is introduced to reduce pollution error estimates without increasing the boundary nodes. The node insertion phase greatly improves the error and the factor with the cost of increasing the node numbers. It is shown that the suggested r-h version algorithm combined with singular elements converges more quickly than the conventional one.

  • Chinese government has implemented the West Development Strategy since 1999 to boost the region's growth and prevent the environmental degradation. Until now, the regional economy and living standard in Western China have been greatly improved, while it also indicated by the State Council that the ecological environment still deteriorated with part improvement, and pressure of water shortage increased. The paper focus on the relationship of GDP per capita and the volume of industrial waste water discharge of all the 12 provinces in Western China from 1989 to 2004, by the expanded EKC model in the cubic form. Results show that they mainly have down trend in the whole sample space but small up trend in the recent years. That means controlling of industrial wastewater discharge is still an important task to be insisted in the Western China.

  • Motor vehicle related air pollution has become more serious because of rapid increase of number of cars, specially in the urban area. The increase trend seems to be accelerated, however, the fact is that road conditions, parking facilities and traffic control systems are far behind coping with this situation. In spite of the lack of related basic data, urban transportation planning (UPT) and air pollution dispersion models were applied to predict air pollution level. In standard UPT model, trip generation, distribution, modal split and network assignment were estimated by experimental equations and appropriate models. The air pollution level in the central business area was believed to be higher and it will increase continuously due to the increase of traffic demand. To meet this situation, air pollution problem should be considered as a part of integrated plannings of urban plans or transportation plans as well as more stringent motor vehicle emission standards, have to be enforced.

  • Hefei has suffered from heavy air pollution, especially car exhaust and industry emissions. The smoke contains PM2.5 and PM10. These smoke will enter people's bodies and have a bad impact on the human body. This review is about PM2.5. This review covers the sources and hazards of PM2.5. It introduces the use of modelling methods to analyze PM2.5 pollution in various places and proposes treatment measures. These cities were heavily polluted by PM2.5, and after the local government's management and renovation, there has been a significant improvement. However, there are still many shortcomings in the process of pollution improvement. This review combines the means used in the process of pollution prevention and control in Handan City, Beijing. Hefei now suffers from some of the same pollution as these cities did in the past.

  • For a long road tunnel, a tunnel ventilation system may be used in order to reduce the pollution level below the required level. To control the tunnel pollution level, a closed loop control algorithm may be used. The cascade control algorithm, which composed of a jet fan control algorithm and an air velocity setpoint algorithm, was developed to regulate the CO level in a tunnel. The verification of control algorithms was carried out by dynamic models developed from real tunnel data sets. The simulation results showed that control algorithms developed for this study were effective to control the tunnel ventilation system.

  • Phytoremediation-the use of plants for the in situ treatment of contaminated soil and water-has recently emerged as an inexpensive and user-friendly alternative to traditional methods of environmental clean-up. The present article outlines the characteristics of phytoremediation based on accumulated research evidence, along with discussions on its advantages and disadvantages. It further reviews various mechanisms involved in the phytoremediation processes: phytoextraction, rhizofiltration, phytostabilization, phytovolatilization and phytodegradation. Along the way, the author summarizes examples of its applications to environmental pollution control. These include wastewater treatment, removal of heavy metals, and hydrocarbons, remediation of recalcitrant contaminants, phytoremediation of radionuclides, and application of transgenic plants for enhanced biodegradation and phytoremediation. The remainder of the article briefly concludes with directions for future research.

  • A discrete state space model for a multiple-reach river system is formulated using the dynamics of biochemical oxygen demand(BOD) and dissolved oxygen(DO). A hierarchical optimization technique, which is applicable to large-scale systems with time-delays in states, is also described to control stream quality in a river as an optimal manner based on the interaction prediction method. The steady state tracking error of the proposed method is determined analytically and a necessary and sufficient condition on which a constant target tracking problem has zero steady-state error is derived. Computer simulations for the river pollution model illustrate the algorithm.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate non-point sources (NPS) pollution and prioritize management areas affected by NPS pollution in the Saemangeum Watershed. AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) technique was selected to prioritize sub-watersheds for effectively managing NPS pollution in this study areas. Generation properties of NPS pollution, discharge properties of NPS pollution, and runoff properties of NPS pollution were selected and set for AHP. Weighted descriptors including indicators like numbers of livestock, land- and livestock-system loads, rainfall, and impervious area ratio were generalized from 0 to 1 and multiply each index based on screened 17 survey data. The results were visualized as maps which enable resource managers to identify sub-watersheds for effective improving water quality. The sub-watersheds located in Gongdeok-Myeon, Yongji-Myeon, Hwangsan-Myeon of Gimje-Si were selected for managing NPS pollution control areas. This result presented that these sub-watershed are more affected by the pollution from livestock-system than from land-system. The finding from this study can be used to screen sub-watersheds that need further assessment by managers and decision-makers within the study area.
