We fabricated BiAlO thin film by a solution process with a brush coating to be used as liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer. Solution-processed BiAlO was coated on the glass substrate by brush process. Prepared thin films were annealed at different temperatures of 80℃, 180℃, and 280℃. To verify whether the BiAlO film was formed properly, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis was performed on Bi and Al. Using a crystal rotation method by polarized optical microscopy, LC alignment state was evaluated. At the annealing temperature of 280℃, the uniform homogenous LC alignment was achieved. To reveal the mechanism of LC alignment by brush coating, field emission scanning electron microscope was used. Through this analysis, spin-coated and brush coated film surface were compared. It was revealed that physical anisotropy was induced by brush coating at a high annealing temperature. Particles were aligned in one direction along which brush coating was made, resulting in a physical anisotropy that affects a uniform LC alignment. Therefore, it was confirmed that brush coating combined with BiAlO thin film annealed at high temperature has a significant potential for LC alignment.
$\alpha$-sexithienyl($\alpha$-6T) thin films were deposited by Organic Molecular Beam Deposition(OMBD) technique, where the $\alpha$-6T was synthesized and purified by the sublimation method. The thin films of the $\alpha$-6T were deposited under various deposition conditions. The effects of deposition rate, substrate temperature. and vacuum pressure an the formation of these films have been studied. The molecular orientations of $\alpha$-6T films were investigated with the polarized electronic absorption spectroscopy. The molecules in the $\alpha$-6T film deposited at a low deposition rate under a high vacuum were aligned almost perpendicular to the substrate. The film deposited at an elevated substrate temperature (~9 $O^{\circ}C$) showed higher conductivity than the film deposited at room temperature.

Detailed surface characteristics of polymer films have been investigated by atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and NEXAFS spectroscopy experiments. The geometric confinement of the surfaces and the necessity to minimize the surface energy lead to the significant molecular organization and orientation in polymer surfaces, with their properties strongly depending upon the atomistic monomer structures. As compared with polymers, oligomeric electronic materials are much more readily aligned by employing various surface anchoring forces, rendering them highly attractive as polarized-light emitting materials and active semiconducting materials in thin film transistors.
Development of the methods to organize zeolite microcrystals into closely packed and uniformly aligned monolayers on various substrates have been pursued viewing microparticles as a novel class of building blocks. We now report that the vertically aligned zeolite monolayer can be applied as novel supramolecularly organized systems for anisotropic photoluminescence in high dichroic ratio, to study energy transfer dynamics between the internal and external fluorophores, and to develop zeolite-based advanced materials. Study of polarized fluorescence spectroscopy and angle-dependent intensity change with dye molecules in different surroundings further provides insight into molecular interactions that can be used for the future design of optoelectronic device in nanometer size. In addition, this report shows that isolating of organic dye through surface treatment is crucial for preventing the egress of the incorporated dye molecules from the channels of zeolite to the solution and to enhance the anisotropic luminescence.

Polarized Fourier transform infrared (IR) absorption is used to probe molecular conformation in a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) during the reorientation induced by the external field. Spectra of planar aligned cells of FLC W314 are measured as functions of IR polarizer orientation and electric field applied to the FLC. The time evolution of the dichroism of the absorbance due to biphenyl core and alkyl tail molecular vibration modes, is observed. Static IR dichroism experiments show a W314 dichroism structure in which the principal axis of dielectric tensor from molecular core vibration are tilted further from the smectic layer normal than those of the tail. This structure indicates the effective binding site in which the molecules are confined in the Sm-C phase has, on average, "zig-zag" shape and this zig-zag binding site structure is rigidly maintained while the molecular axis rotates about the layer normal during field-induced switching.

The effect of mixing ratio on the corrosion protection of carbon steel coated by a film composed of poly(vinylidene) fluoride (PVDF) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was examined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Surface crystallization behavior and thermal properties of the PVDF/PMMA coated carbon steel were evaluated using polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. A Maltese cross-pattern spherulite crystal was observed in the PVDF/PMMA coating film, which became more apparent with increasing PVDF content. The highest corrosion protection performance was achieved with 60 wt.% PVDF-coated carbon steel, and delamination and corrosion reactions were observed for 20 wt.% PVDF-coated carbon steel. Further, corrosion protection performance with an amorphous/crystal mixture (PVDF/PMMA, 60/40 (w/w)) was better than those observed in the amorphous domain and the perfect-crystal domain of the PVDF/PMMA blended coating system.
To elucidate the liquid crystal(LC) molecules alignment mechanism, it is important to determine the molecular orientation of the rubbed polymer surface molecules that directly contact with LC molecules. In this work, the molecular orientation on a rubbed surface of polyimide (SE-3310, Nissan) film has been studied by polarized FTIR absorption spectroscopy. It has been found that molecular chain on the rubbed surface of polymide film are oriented along the rubbing direction and are tilted up on an average by 5.0$^{\circ}$. In the SHG(Second Harmonic Generation) measurement, the pretilt angle of molecular chain on the poylmide fim was 4.6$^{\circ}$ fro, the surface plane. And the pedit angle of liquid crystal (ZLI-2293, Merck) molecules measured by crystal rotation method was 5.4$^{\circ}$in the same rubbing condition.
Molecular layer deposition (MLD) is sequential, self-limiting surface reaction to form conformal and ultrathin polymer film. This technique generally uses bifunctional precursors for stepwise sequential surface reaction and entirely organic polymer films. Also, in comparison with solution-based technique, because MLD is vapor-phase deposition based on ALD, it allows epitaxial growth of molecular layer on substrate and is especially good for surface reaction or coating of nanostructure such as nanopore, nanochannel, nanwire array and so on. In this study, polyurea film that consisted of phenylenediisocyanate and phenylenediamine was formed by MLD technique. In situ Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) measurement on high surface area SiO2 substrate was used to monitor the growth of polyurethane and polyurea film. Also, to investigate orientation of chemical bonding formed polymer film, plan-polarized grazing angle FTIR spectroscopy was used and it showed epitaxial growth and uniform orientation of chemical bones of polyurea films.
We synthesized the photoresponsive side chain polymers containing aminonitro azobenzene for studying the effect of temperature on photoinduced birefringence. Four different copolymers were prepared using methacrylate, α-methylstyrene, and itaconate monomer. Photoisomerization was observed under the exposure of UV light using UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy. Reorientation of polar azobenzene molecules induced optical anisotropy under a linearly polarized light at 532 nm. The change of the birefringence was observed with increasing the sample temperature under a continuous irradiation of excitation light. We could estimate the activation energy of molecular motion in thermal and photochemical mode. Besides the effect of glass transition temperature on the activation energy, we focused our interests on the effect of geometrical hindrance of polar azobenzene molecules and cooperative motion of environmental mesogenic molecules in the vicinity of polar azobenzene molecules.

The normal and fluorinated high-Tc superconducting materials, $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}F_y$with $0.25{\leq}x{\leq}0.55\;and\;0.00{\leq}y{\leq}0.30$, were synthesized to investigate the dopping effect of fluorine atom on the superconductivity of Y123 and studied by X-ray diffraction analysis and electron probe microanalysis, resistivity and thermopower measurements, and polarized micro-Raman spectroscopy. The reproducible micro-Raman spectra were recorded and analyzed. The coherent assignments could be suggested for the spectra of normal and fluorinated samples. The fluorine atoms introduced were found to be substituted for oxygen in pyramidal Cu-O units rather than in Cu-O chains. The unit cell parameters were decreased upon the substitution of oxygen by fluorine atom. From the decreasing cell parameters and Tc, the increasing thermopower, and the possible assignments of the vibrational modes, it could be suggested that the dopping of fluorine atom localizes the superconducting electrons in Y123.
