Spectral Characteristics of FBGs Inscribed in Polarization-Maintaining Fiber with Two Side Holes (두 개의 Side Hole을 가진 편광유지 광섬유에 새겨진 단주기 격자의 스펙트럼 특성)

  • In this paper, we will discuss the spectral characteristics of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) inscribed in two different types of polarization-maintaining fibers with side holes. One showed high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), narrow bandwidth and high bending sensitivity, while the other one showed insensitivity to bending due to the small size of the side holes.

Design of Reconfigurable Dual Polarization Patch Array Antenna (재구성 이중편파 패치 배열 안테나 설계)

  • In this paper, we proposed reconfigurable dual polarization patch array antenna that can select two polarizations(Vertical, RHCP) using defected ground structure and Pin diode. The proposed antenna was designed arranging a circular polarization patch antenna implemented with a square microstrip patch and two slots 3x3 at 25.8mm placed, a half-wavelength of 5.8 GHz. Conect the pin diode and the capacitor to the slot diagonally placed on the ground of each antennas, and select polarization using the open/short operating according to the application of DC voltage to the pin diode. As a result of the design, the gain of the antenna is 11.7 dBi at vertical polarization and 11.6 dBic at RHCP. The axial ratio is 20.3 dB at 1.8 dB vertical polarization at RHCP. Mutual Coupling is Maximum to -20.8 dB for vertical polarization and Maximum to -30.1 dB for RHCP.

Polarization Analysis of Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) Geomagnetic Data for Monitoring Earthquake-precusory Phenomenon in Korea (지진 전조현상 모니터링을 위한 ULF 대역 지자기장의 분극 분석)

  • Since the 1990's, a number of ULF geomagnetic disturbance associated with earthquake occurrences have actively been reported, and polarization analysis of geomagnetic fields becomes one of potential candidates to be capable of predicting short-term earthquake. This study develops the modified polarization analysis method based on the previous studies, and analyzes three-component geomagnetic fields obtained at Cheongyang geomagnetic observatory using the developed method. A daily polarization value (the ratio of spectral power of horizontal and vertical geomagnetic field) is calculated with a focus on the 0.01 Hz band, which is known to be the most sensitive to seismogenic ULF radiation. We analyze a total of 10 months of geomagnetic data obtained at Cheongyang observatory, and compare the polarization values with the Kp index and the earthquake occurred in the analysis period. The results show that there is little correlation between the temporal variations of polarization values and Kp index, but remarkable increases in polarization values are identified which are associated with two earthquakes. Comparison the polarization values obtained at Cheongyang and Kanoya observatory indicates that the increases of polarization values at Cheongyang might be due to not global geomagnetic induction but the locally occurred earthquakes. Furthermore, these features are clearly shown in normalized polarization values, which take account in the statistical characteristics of each geomagnetic field. On the basis of these results, polarization analysis can be used as promising tool for monitoring the earthquake-precursory phenomenon.

A Study on the Design of Wideband Microstrip Cross Slot Array Antennas with Circular Polarization (원편파용 광대역 마이크로스트립 크로스 슬롯 어레이 안테나의 설계에 관한 연구)

  • There are many types of circularly polarized(CP) microstrip antenna elements, which are used as a good unit radiator. Since an advantage of CP antenna is no strict alignment requirements between Rx and Tx system, the printed antennas with circular polarization are very often used in numerous satellite and mobile radio systems. In order to realize the broad bandwidth of 3 dB axial ratio and impedance of CP microstrip antenna, complex feed structure and tri-plate patch element have been researched. This paper describes a design of wideband microstrip cross slot array antennas with circular polarization. The proposed antenna is composed of an open-ended microstrip feed line as a feeder and a cross slot as a radiator for circular polarization. To realize the wide bandwidth, tri-plate structure are considered and cross slot is electromagnetically coupled with feed line. Optimum parameters of 1-element cross slot antenna are analyzed and designed by method of moments. These parameters are also applied to may antennas design considered the mutual coupling between radiating elements. Right hand circular polarization(RHCP) and left hand circular polarization(LHCP) of the proposed antenna are easily controlled by asymmetrical cross slot structure and slot position. In 1-element and 15-element cross slot array antenna, the good axial ratio of 1 dB below and the broad bandwidth characteristics of antenna are obtained.

  • In the present study, the piezoelectricity and polarization of multilayer ceramic actuator, being designed to stack PMN-PZ-PT ceramic layers and Ag-Pd electrode layers alternatively, were investigated under a consideration of geometric factor, the volume ratio of the ceramic to the electrode layers. The actuators were fabricated by tape casting of $0.2Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3)O_3-0.38PbZrO_3-0,42PbTiO_3$ followed by lamination and burnout & co-firing processes. The actuators of $10\times10\times0.6~2\textrm{mm}^3$ in size were formed in a way that $60 ~ 200\mu\textrm{m}$ thick were stacked alternatively with $5\mu\textrm{m}$ thick electrode layer. Increases in polarization and electric field-induced displacement with thickness of the ceramic layer were attributed to change of $90^{\circ}$/$180^{\circ}$ domain ratio, which was affected by interlayer internal stress. The piezoelectricity and actuation behaviors were found to depend upon the volume ratio (or thickness ratio) of ceramic to electrode layers.

Fatigue and Retention Characteristics of PLZT(10/y/z) Thin films with Various Zr/Ti Concentrations Ratio (PLZT(10/y/z) 박막에서 Zr/Ti 농도에 따른 피로와 리텐션 특성)

  • The effects of Zr/Ti concentration ratio in PLZT (10/y/z) thin films prepared by sol-gel method are investigated for the NVFRAM application. As Ti amount of Zr/Ti concentration ratio increases, the dielectric constants at 10 kHz decrease from 550 to 400, while the loss tangents increase from 0.028 to 0.053 and the leakage current densities at 170 kV/cm decrease from $1.64\times10^{-6}$ to $1.26\times10^{-7}\;A/cm^2$. In the results of hysteresis loops measured at $\pm170kV/cm$, the remanent polarization and the coercive field increase from 6.62 to $12.86{\mu}C/cm^2$ and from 32.15 to 56.45 kV/cm, respectively, according to the change from 40/60 to 0/100 in Zr/Ti concentration ratio. Fatigue and retention properties also improve much as the Zr/Ti concentration ratio change from 40/60 to 0/100. After applying $10^9$ square pulses with $\pm5V$, the remanent polarization of the PLZT (10/40/60) thin film decreases $50\%$ from the initial state while that of the PLZT (10/0/100) thin film decreases $28\%$. In the results of retention measurements of 10s s, the remanent polarization of the PLZT (10/0/100) thin film dec.eases only $10\%$ from the initial state, while that of the PLZT (10/40/60) thin film decreases $40\%$.

  • Right hand circularly polarized Ka band microstrip patch array antenna was designed, manufacture and measurement were carried out. In order to lower axial ratio performance sequential rotation array technique was used. With mono-pulse feed There are sum and delta channel. Waveguide to microstrip transition was used. The 512 array antenna was performed which axial ratio is about 1.ldB in the half power beam width and also 1.ldB at the normal direction. Directivity gain of designed antenna is 32dB.

  • (Ba, Sr)TiO$_3$[BST] thin films were fabricated on Pt/SiO$_2$/Si substrate by RF sputtering technique. The structural, dielectric and electrical properties of BST thin films were investigated with Ar/O$_2$ ratio. Dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the BST thin film were about 1020 and 2.0[%], respectively. (at RF power 80W, post annealing temperature $650^{\circ}C$, deposition pressure of 5mTorr and Ar/O$_2$=80/20). For the BST(Ar/O$_2$=80/20) thin film with Polarization switching cycles of 10$^{10}$ , remanent polarization and coercive field were 0.084[$\mu$C/cm$^2$], 1.954[kV/cm], respectively.

  • An electro-optic polymer digital optical switch with rib waveguides is designed and fabricated by using the RIE method. POlarization-independent and wavelength-insensitive operation is demonstrated at the wavelengths of 1.3mm and 1.55mm, for the first time in electro-optic polymer-based devices. The rib waveguides have been designed to achieve good guiding properites for both TE and TM polarizations by controlling the etching depth as well as its aspect ratio. Especially theetching depth is controlled to change the guided mode profiles of the rib waveguide and thus to achieve an optimum coupling in the branch. The measured crosstalk is better than -16dB and the extincton ratio of each output port is greater than 16dB.

  • In this paper a dual-band circularly polarized stacked microstrip antenna for Global Positioning System (GPS) service and Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) service is designed. By stacking two different corner-truncated square microstrip patches, dual-band, dual polarization characteristic is obtained. Experimental results show impedance bandwidth of 60 MHz (3.8%) and axial ratio bandwidth of 6 MHz (0.4%) in GPS and impedance bandwidth of 126 MHz (4.7%) and axial ratio bandwidth of 30MHz (1.1%) in DMB.
