This paper represents the role of pinna in localizing target direction. Specially, this paper described what is the role of right-side pinna versus left-side pinna. In this experiment, one side of the pinna function was distorted intentionally by inserting a short tube on the ear canal. The localization error caused by right and left side pinna distortion was investigated. Since a laser pointer showed much less error (0.5%) in localizing target position than FASTRAK (30%) that has been generally used, it was used for the pointing task. It was found that harmonic components were not essential for the auditory target localization, however, non-harmonic nearby frequency components were more important to localize target direction of sound. We have found that the right pinna is one of the most important functions in localizing target direction and pure tone with only one frequency component is confusing for localization.

This paper addresses development of the ultra-light analog sun sensors for small satellite applications. The sun sensor is suitable for attitude determination for small satellite because of its small, light, low-cost, and low power consumption characteristics. The sun sensor is designed, manufactured and characteristic-tested with the target requirements of ${\pm}60^{\circ}$ FOV (Field of View) and pointing accuracy of ${\pm}2^{\circ}$. Since the sun sensor has nonlinear characteristics between output measurement voltage and incident angle of sunlight, a higher order calibration equation is required for error correction. The error was calculated by using a polynomial calibration equation that was computed by the least square method obtained from the measured voltages vs. angles characteristics. Finally, the accuracies of 1-axis and 2-axes sun sensors, which consist of 2 detectors, are compared.

The Ka-band cloud radar (KCR) has been operated by the National Institute of Meteorological Research (NIMR) of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) at Boseong National Center for Intensive Observation of severe weather since 2013. Evaluation of data quality is an essential process to further analyze cloud information. In this study, we estimate the measurement error and the sampling uncertainty to evaluate data quality. By using vertically pointing data, the statistical uncertainty is obtained by calculating the standard deviation of each radar parameter. The statistical uncertainties decrease as functions of sampling number. The statistical uncertainties of horizontal and vertical reflectivities are identical (0.28 dB). On the other hand, the statistical uncertainties of Doppler velocity (spectrum width) are 2.2 times (1.6 times) larger at the vertical channel. The reflectivity calibration of KCR is also performed using X-band vertically pointing radar (VertiX) and 2-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD). Since the monitoring of calibration values is useful to evaluate radar condition, the variation of calibration is monitored for five rain events. The average of calibration bias is 10.77 dBZ and standard deviation is 3.69 dB. Finally, the statistical characteristics of cloud properties have been investigated during two months in autumn using calibrated reflectivity. The percentage of clouds is about 26% and 16% on September to October. However, further analyses are required to derive general characteristics of autumn cloud in Korea.
The SPICA (SPace Infrared Telescope for Cosmology & Astrophysics) project is a next-generation infrared space telescope optimized for mid- and far-infrared observation with a cryogenically cooled 3m-class telescope. It will achieve the high resolution as well as the unprecedented sensitivity from mid to far-infrared range. The FPC (Focal Plane Camera) is a Korean-led near-infrared instrument as an international collaboration. The FPC-S and FPC-G are responsible for the scientific observation in the near-infrared and the fine guiding, respectively. The FPC-G will significantly reduce the alignement and random pointing error through the observation of guiding stars in the focal plane. We analyzed the pointing requirement from the focal plane instruments. The feasibility study was performed to achieve the requirements. Here, we present the role of SPICA/FPC as a fine guiding camera.
A great variety of handheld device are coming onto the market. Some have advanced features compacted into very small sized hardware. In order to maximize the capability of these devices, we need to understand the characteristics of different input methods and utilize them in a sufficient way. Our study aims to understand characteristics of each device, so that we can design user interfaces more effectively. Two experiments were conducted to compare target pointing performance with a pen and with a hardware key on small displays. In experiment 1, we examined participants' performance of target pointing with both input methods at different target sizes. It was found that pen operation is more erroneous than key based operation when target size is smaller than 5mm, but at a target size of 5mm, the error rate decreased to the same level as for key input. In experiment 2, we examined the effect of the number of targets. The results showed, with a target size of 5mm, the pen could point to targets quicker than with key input, when the distance to the target exeeds a path length of 3 steps.
The purpose of the present study was to examine gaze effects on spatial and kinematic characteristics during a pointing task. Subjects were asked to watch and point to an aimed target (2 mm in diameter) displayed on a vertically mounted board. Four gaze conditions were developed as combinations of "seeing-aiming" in terms of the eye movements: Focal-Focal (F-F), Focal-Fixing (F-X), Fixing-Focal (X-F), and Fixing-Fixing (X-X). Both the home target and an aimed target were presented for 1 second and then were disappeared in F-F and X-F. In X-F and X-X, only an aimed target disappeared after 1 second. Subjects were asked to point (with index finger tip) to an aimed target accurately as soon as the aimed target was removed. A significant main effect of gaze was found (p<.01) for normalized movement time. Peripheral retina targets had significantly larger absolute error compared to central retina targets on the x (medio-lateral) and z (superior-inferior) axes (p<.01). A significant undershooting to peripheral retina targets on the x axis was found (p<.01). F-F and X-F had larger peak velocities compared to F-X and X-X (p<.01). F-F and X-F were characterized by more time spent in the deceleration phase compared to F-X and X-X (p<.01). The present study demonstrates that central vision utilizes a form of on-line visual processing to reach to an object, and thus increases spatial accuracy. However, peripheral vision utilizes a relatively off-line visual processing with a dependency on proprioceptive information.
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate how well eye movement times in visual target selection tasks by an eye input device follows the typical Fitts' Law and to compare vertical and horizontal eye movement times. Background: Typically manual pointing provides excellent fit to the Fitts' Law model. However, when an eye input device is used for the visual target selection tasks, there were some debates on whether the eye movement times in can be described by the Fitts' Law. More empirical studies should be added to resolve these debates. This study is an empirical study for resolving this debate. On the other hand, many researchers reported the direction of movement in typical manual pointing has some effects on the movement times. The other question in this study is whether the direction of eye movement also affects the eye movement times. Method: A cursor movement times in visual target selection tasks by both input devices were collected. The layout of visual targets was set up by two types. Cursor starting position for vertical movement times were in the top of the monitor and visual targets were located in the bottom, while cursor starting positions for horizontal movement times were in the right of the monitor and visual targets were located in the left. Results: Although eye movement time was described by the Fitts' Law, the error rate was high and correlation was relatively low ($R^2=0.80$ for horizontal movements and $R^2=0.66$ for vertical movements), compared to those of manual movement. According to the movement direction, manual movement times were not significantly different, but eye movement times were significantly different. Conclusion: Eye movement times in the selection of visual targets by an eye-gaze input device could be described and predicted by the Fitts' Law. Eye movement times were significantly different according to the direction of eye movement. Application: The results of this study might help to understand eye movement times in visual target selection tasks by the eye input devices.

In this paper, we have identified the system instability factors in a bistatic radar system using pulse chasing and considered their effects on the bistatic receiver's MTI(Moving Target Indication) improvement performance. The pulse chasing is a scan method that searchs a restricted area on the transmit pulse-to-pulse basis and the MTI filter is a signal processing that separates a target from some kinds of interferences such as clutter using small number of transmit pulses. Ideal MTI processing performance, e.g., clutter attenuation and improvement, has been limited by the property of the clutter itself, however, the MTI performance in a proposed bistatic receiver configuration could be affected by the receiving beam pointing error during pulse chasing scanning. Also, for the bistatic receiver, we have defined other system instability factors, which result from the time synchronization error, COHO's phase error, the frequency/phase synchronization error, and have analyzed their effects on the system performance improvement.

In general, Harris detector is commonly used for finding salient points in watermarking systems using feature points. Harris detector is a kind of combined comer and edge detector which is based on neighboring image data distribution, therefore it has some limitation to find accurate salient points after watermark embedding or any kinds of digital attacks. In this paper, we have used cross reference points which use not data distribution but geometrical structure of a normalized image in order to avoid pointing error caused by the distortion of image data. After normalization, we find cross reference points and take inverse normalization of these points. Next, we construct a group of triangles using tessellation with inversely normalized cross reference points. The watermarks are affine transformed and transformed-watermarks are embedded into not normalized image but original one. Only locations of watermarks are determined on the normalized image. Therefore, we can reduce data loss of watermark which is caused by inverse normalization. As a result, we can detect watermarks with high correlation after several digital attacks.
