  • In computer graphics, shadows play a very important role as a hint of inter-object distance as well as themselves in terms of realism. To represent shadows, some traditional methods such as shadow mapping and shadow volume have been frequently used for the purpose. However, the rendering results are not natural since they assume the point light. On the contrary, an area light can render soft-shadows, but its computation is too burdensome due to integral over the whole light source surface. Many alternatives have been introduced, back-projection of occluder onto the light source to get visibility of light or filtering of shadow boundary by calculating size of penumbra. But they also have problems of light bleeding or ringing effects because of low order approximation, or low performance. In this paper, we describe a method to improve those problems using shadow atlas.

  • This paper proposes a calibration method from two images. Camera calibration is necessarily required to obtain 3D Information from 2D images. Previous works to accomplish the camera calibration needed the calibration object or required more than three images to calculate the Kruppa equation, however, we use the geometric constraints of parallelism and orthogonality can be easily presented in man-made scenes. The task of it is to obtain intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters. The intrinsic parameters are evaluated from vanishing points and then the extrinsic parameters which are consisted of rotation matrix and translation vector of the camera are estimated from corresponding points of two views. From the calibrated parameters, we can recover the projection matrices for each view point. These projection matrices are used to recover 3D information of the scene and can be used to visualize new viewpoints.

  • This paper investigates the existence of mild solution for a fractional integro-differential equations with a deviating argument and nonlocal initial condition in an arbitrary separable Hilbert space H via technique of approximations. We obtain an associated integral equation and then consider a sequence of approximate integral equations obtained by the projection of considered associated nonlocal fractional integral equation onto finite dimensional space. The existence and uniqueness of solutions to each approximate integral equation is obtained by virtue of the analytic semigroup theory via Banach fixed point theorem. Next we demonstrate the convergence of the solutions of the approximate integral equations to the solution of the associated integral equation. We consider the Faedo-Galerkin approximation of the solution and demonstrate some convergenceresults. An example is also given to illustrate the abstract theory.

  • A core technology for implementation of Augmented Reality is to develop a merging algorithm between interesting 3-D objects and real images. In this paper, we present a 3-D object recognition method to decide viewing direction toward the object from camera. This process is the starting point to merge with real image and 3-D objects. Perspective projection between a camera and 3-dimentional objects defines a plane in 3-D space that is from a line in an image and the focal point of the camera. If no errors with perfect 3-D models were introduced in during image feature extraction, then model lines in 3-D space projecting onto this line in the image would exactly lie in this plane. • This paper presents a new approach to evaluate optimal basic reliability indices of electric distribution systems using genetic algorithm. The use of optimal reliability evaluation is an important aspect of distribution system planning and operation to determine adequacy reliability level of each area. In this paper, the reliability model is based on the analytical method, connecting component failure to load point outage in each section. The proposed method applies genetic algorithm to calculate the optimal values of basic reliability indices, ie. failure rate and repair time, for a load point in the power distribution system, subject to minimizing interruption cost. Test results for the model system are reported in the paper compared with a direct optimization method(gradient projection).

  • There are many videos about sports. There is a large need for content based video retrievals. In sports videos, the motions and camera works have much information about shots and plays. This paper proposes the baseball game process understanding using the similar motion retrieval on videos. We can retrieve the similar motion parts based on motions shown in videos using the space-time images describing the motions. Using a finite state model of plays, we can decide the precise point of pitches from the pattern of estimated typical motions. From only the motions, we can decide the precise point of pitches. This paper describes the method and the experimental results.

  • In this paper, we propose a new algorithm that obtains the surfac eorientation of the texture image using structural approaches. The proposed method showed that structural approaches can be effectively used in 3-D analysis of textures as well as description and segmentation without additional information. By examining fourier power spectrum of the texture image, we detemine the tilt of the textured surface. Then, 1-D projection information of the texture in the obtained tilt direction is used to compute the slant. Using the obtained information, we can compute the vanishing point, and rearrange the textured surface with lines converging to the vanishing point and lines perpendicular to the tilt direction. In the experimental results, we have ascertained the proposed algorithm can make a rpecise 3-D analysis of structural textures.

  • A visual servoing method is proposed for a robot with a camera in hand. Specifically, vanishing point features are suggested by employing a viewing model of perspective projection to calculate the relative rolling, pitching and yawing angles between the object and the camera. To compensate dynamic characteristics of the robot, desired feature trajectories for the learning of visually guided line-of-sight robot motion are obtained by measuring features by the camera in hand not in the entire workspace, but on a single linear path along which the robot moves under the control of a commercially provided function of linear motion. And then, control actions of the camera are approximately found by fuzzy-neural networks to follow such desired feature trajectories. To show the validity of proposed algorithm, some experimental results are illustrated, where a four axis SCARA robot with a B/W CCD camera is used.

  • This paper proposes a simple space vector PWM (SVPWM) scheme including overmodulation operation for 3-level NPC (Neutral Point Clamped) Inverters. The proposed scheme features a simple decision and calculation procedure for determining switching times in the overmodulation range by utilizing the duty calculation method used in 2-level inverters and the minimum phase error projection method widely employed in motor drive systems. The proposed scheme does not need to detect the angle of the reference vector or calculate trigonometric functions to determine the magnitude of the voltage vector. The magnitude of the angle of the new reference voltage vector is decided in advance with the help of the Fourier Series Expansion to extend the linearity of the output voltage of 3-level inverters in the overmodulation region. Experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed SVPWM scheme including overmodulation operation for 3-level NPC inverters.
