  • This paper presents a mathematical model and simulation method for investigating the performance of set net systems and fish cage systems influenced by currents and waves. Both systems consist of netting, mooring ropes, a floating collar and sinkers. The netting and ropes were considered flexible structures and the floating collar was considered an elastic structure. Both were modeled on a mass-spring model. The structures were divided into finite elements and mass points were placed at the mid-point of each element, and the mass points were connected by mass-less springs. Each mass point was subjected to external and internal forces and the total force was calculated at every integration step. An implicit integration scheme was used to solve the nonlinear dynamic system. The computation method was applied to dynamic simulation of actual systems simultaneously influenced by currents and waves in order to evaluate their practicality. The simulation results improved our understanding of the behavior of the structure and provided valuable information concerning the optimized design of set net and fish cage systems exposed to an open ocean environment.

  • The aim of this study is to provide fundamental informations that make it possible to use a cool stream and a hot stream simultaneously. We changed the pressure of compressed air that flows into a tube, the inner diameter of orifice that a cold stream exits, and the mass flow rate ratio. And in each case, we measured the temperature of a cold stream and a hot stream in each exit of a tube. Also we measured the axial temperature distribution and the radial temperature distribution in internal space of a tube. From the study, following conclusive remarks can be made. Average flow rate that flows into a tube is in proportion to square root of inlet pressure. As inlet pressure increases axial and radial temperature distribution in the inner space of vortex-tube increase. As mass flow rate ratio change, separation point moves.

  • Recently, Genetic Algorithm(GA) is widely adopted into a search procedure for structural optimization, which is a stochastic direct search strategy that mimics the process of genetic evolution. This methods consist of three genetics operations maned selection, crossover and mutation. Contrast to traditional optimal design techniques which use design sensitivity analysis results, GA, being zero-order method, is very simple. So, they can be easily applicable to wide area of design optimization problems. Also, owing to multi-point search procedure, they have higher probability of converge to global optimum compared to traditional techniques which take one-point search method. In this study, a method of finding the optimum values of suspension parameters is proposed by using the GA. And vehicle is modelled as planar vehicle having 5 degree-of-freedom. The generalized coordinates are vertical motion of passenger seat, sprung mass and front and rear unsprung mass and rotate(pitch) motion of sprung mass. For rapid converge and precluding local optimum, share function which distribute chromosomes over design bound is introduced. Elitist survival model, remainder stochastic sampling without replacement method, multi-point crossover method are adopted. In the sight of the improvement of ride comfort, good result can be obtained in 5-D.O.F. vehicle model by using GA.

  • To make a firing table of artillery with trajectory simulation, a precise trajectory model which corresponds with real firing test is required. Recent 4-DOF modified point mass trajectory model is considered accurate as a theoretical model, but fitting coefficients are used in calculation to match with real firing test results. In this paper, modified point mass trajectory model is presented and method of setting ballistic coefficient is introduced by applying optimization algorithms. After comparing two different algorithms, Particle Swarm Optimization and Covariance Matrix Adaptation - Evolutionary Strategy, we found that using CMA-ES algorithm gives fine optimization result. This fitting coefficient setting method can be used to make trajectory simulation which is required for development of new projectiles in the future.

  • Robust semi-active vibration control of wind turbines using tuned mass dampers (TMDs) is a promising technique. This study investigates a 1.5 megawatt wind turbine controlled by eight different types of tuned mass damper systems of equal mass: a passive TMD, a semi-active varying-spring TMD, a semi-active varying-damper TMD, a semi-active varying-damper-and-spring TMD, as well as these four damper systems paired with an additional smaller passive TMD near the mid-point of the tower. The mechanism and controllers for each of these TMD systems are explained, such as employing magnetorheological dampers for the varying-damper TMD cases. The turbine is modelled as a lumped-mass 3D finite element model. The uncontrolled and controlled turbines are subjected to loading and operational cases including service wind loads on operational turbines, seismic loading with service wind on operational turbines, and high-intensity storm wind loads on parked turbines. The displacement and acceleration responses of the tower at the first and second mode shape maxima were used as the performance indicators. Ultimately, it was found that while all the semi-active TMD systems outperformed the passive systems, it was the semi-active varying-damper-and-spring system that was found to be the most effective overall - capable of controlling vibrations about as effectively with only half the mass as a passive TMD. It was also shown that by reducing the mass of the TMD and adding a second smaller TMD below, the vibrations near the mid-point could be greatly reduced at the cost of slightly increased vibrations at the tower top.

  • The rigid body characteristics (value of mass, Position of center of mass, moments and products of inertia) of mechanical systems can be identified from FRF data or vibration spectra of rigid body motion. Therefore the accuracy of rigid body characteristics is connected directly with the accuracy of measured data for rigid body motions. In this paper, a method of improving accuracy of measurement of rigid body motion is presented. Applying rigid body theory, ail translational and rotational displacements at a tentative point on the rigid body are calculated using the measured translational displacements for several points and transfer matrix. Then the estimated displacements for the identical points are calculated using the 6 displacements of the tentative Point and transfer matrix. By using correlation coefficient between measured and estimated displacements, we can detect the existence of errors that are contained in a certain measured displacement. Consequently, the improved rigid body motion with respect to a tentative point can be obtained by eliminating the contaminated data.

  • The main purpose of this article is to describe the magnetohydrodynamic stagnation point flow of Walter-B nanofluid over a stretching sheet. The phenomena of heat and mass transfer are based on the involvement of thermal radiation and chemical reaction. Characteristics of Newtonian heating are given special attention. The Brownian motion and thermophoresis models are introduced in the temperature and concentration expressions. Appropriate variables are implemented for the transformation of partial differential frameworks into sets of ordinary differential equations. Plots for velocity, temperature, and nanoparticle concentration are displayed and analyzed for governing parameters. The skin friction coefficient and local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are studied using numerical values. The temperature and heat transfer rate are enhanced within the frame of the thermal conjugate parameter.

  • Design optimization of a transonic compressor rotor (NASA rotor 37) using response surface method and three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis has been carried out in this work. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was used in the flow analysis. Two design variables were selected to optimize the stacking line of the blade, and mass flow was used as a design variable, as well, to obtain new design point at peak efficiency. Data points for response evaluations were selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method was used for the optimization on the response surface. As a main result of the optimization, adiabatic efficiency was successfully improved, and new design mass flow that is appropriate to an improved blade was obtained. Also, it is found that the design process provides reliable design of a turbomachinery blade with reasonable computing time.

  • Addition of point supports results in increasing the fundamental frequency of a structure, generally. In this paper, searching more effective location of point supports is a major object to maximize a fundamental frequency of various cantilever plates. Results are presented by aspect ratio of the plate, by design domain within which point supports generate, and by mass location equipped on the plate. Optimization method is applied due to expand the ESO(Evolutionary Structural Optimization) method.
