  • The roughness models have developed to describe the grinding behaviour and predict the final quality of workpiece. The model forms of the plunge grinding process are generally established with initial and steady state model form in accordance with the accumulated metal removal. The steady state roughness model form are based on the grinding condition and specific parameters are used to show the influence of it according to the grinding process such as the equivalent chip thickness and accumulated metal removal. However, the models have been developed in past are not considered the effect of changing the grinding conditions in the same batch. In this paper, the roughness model form to consider the effect of changing grinding condition is proposed and the performance of proposed model is evaluated based on the experimental results.

  • The thermal response of sprinkler is characterized by the response time index(RTI). The RTI represents the product of the thermal time constant for the heat responsive element of a sprinkler and the square root of the hot air velocity at plunge test. A plunge test is adapted for measuring RTI, wherein a sprinkler is suddenly immersed in the steady flow in the test section of a hot air tunnel. The method of measurements of the response parameters is presented.

  • Bacause the chatter vibration is a main factor to damage on the quality and integrity, The cure is required peticurity in cykinderical plunge grinding. The chatter vibration relatied with wheel speed, workpiece and infeed rate. Therefore, we expressed more credible normal signal and chatter signal Pattern in accrdiance with wheel speed and acquired RMS signal of the accelerrometer. In thos study, after finding the chatter pattern, we applied two parameters, standard deviation and Kurtosis, to Neural Network.

  • Because the existing scour prediction formulas for plunge pools of pipe culverts and spillways give a wide range of predicted scour depths, it is difficult to estimate actual scour depths. A review of literature showed that wide range of predicted values was caused mostly by lack of thorough analysis of the scour mechanism. In this study, the effects of the parameters govering scour were examined, and the scour potentials were measured. The major variables govering scour were the velocity and size of jet impinging into the plunge pool, the submerged weight of bed material, the ratio of jet size to bed material size, the tail watr depth of the plunge pool, and the angle of jet impact on water surface. The ratio of jet size to bed material size to bed material size was found to be another significant parameter affecting scour for larger bed materials. A densimetric Froude nember of the bed material in incipient motion was formulated. This number represented the scour potential of the jet at the point where the bed material was tested.

  • Because a failure to provide enough plunge pool depth can create a risk to the structural stability of the psillways or dams, many researchers have proposed experimental formulas for claculating ultimate scour depth under jet issued from spillways and pipe culverts. For the design purposes of a plunge pool, scour potential distribution is important as much as the ultimate scour depth is. In this study scour potential distributions near the jet impinging point on a porous plane which can simulate a real cohesionless movable flat bed has been measured. Experimental results showed that scour potential distributions are geometrically similar to each other provided the angle of jet impact was the same. Statistical analysis of experimental results showed that scour potential distributions for the design purposes of a plunge pool could be expressed by a single equation within a range of this experiment. The proposed formula for the prediction of scour potential distributions agrees well with experimental measurements.

  • A5J32-T4 and A5052-H32 dissimilar aluminum alloy plates with thickness of 1.6 and 1.5 mm were welded by friction stir lap welding (FSLW). The FSLW were studied using different probe length tool and various welding conditions which is rotation speed of 1000, 1500 rpm and welding speed of 100 to 600 mm/min and material arrangement, respectively. The effects of plunge depth of tool and welding conditions on tensile properties and weld nugget formation. The results showed that three type nugget shapes such as hooking, void, sound have been observed with revolutionary pitch. This plunge depth and material arrangement were found to effect on the void and hooking formation, which in turn significantly influenced the mechanical properties. The maximum joint efficiency of the FSLWed plates was about 90% compared to base metal, A5052-H32 when the A5052-H32 was positioned upper plate and plunge depth was positioned at near interface between upper and lower plates.

  • Butt-joints of A6061-T6 and AZ31 plates were successfully manufactured by using a friction stir welding method. Off-set free joints and off-set joints were fabricated to investigate the effect of the tool plunge position on the mechanical properties of the joints. Hardness test, tensile test and charpy impact test was performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of the joints. Off-set condition resulted in increase of mechanical properties of the joints. The variation of the hardness distribution in the SZ was also stabilized in the off-set condition. Tensile strength of the off-set joint was about 85% against to that of the AZ31 base metal. Impact absorption energy by Charpy-Impact-Test of the off-set joint also increased by almost 2 times against to that of the AZ31 base metal.

  • This paper discusses the optimization of friction stir spot welding (FSSW) process parameters for joining Aluminum alloy (AA6061-T6) with Magnesium alloy (AZ31B) sheets. Prior to optimization an empirical relationship was developed to predict the Tensile Shear Fracture Load (TSFL) incorporating the four most important FSSW parameters, i.e., tool rotational speed, plunge rate, dwell time and tool diameter ratio, using response surface methodology (RSM). The experiments were conducted based on four factor, five levels central composite rotatable design (CCD) matrix. The maximum TSFL obtained was 3.61kN, with the tool rotation of 1000 rpm, plunge rate of 16 mm/min, dwell time of 5 sec and tool diameter ratio of 2.5.

  • This paper deals with monitoring of grinding wheel wear in surface grinding process. A laser scanning micrometer is used to measure the circumferential shape as well as the axial shape of grinding wheel. The monitoring system is applied to two kinds of grinding methods: plunge and traverse grinding. Through experiments, it is found that measurement of grinding wheel wear reveals information of roughness of ground surface and the adequate dressing time. In addition, monitoring of grinding wheel wear makes it possible to identify abnormal grinding conditions.
