Hydrogen-steam gas mixture may be injected into containment with flow regime varying both spatially and transiently due to wall effect and pressure difference between primary loop and containment in severe accidents induced by loss of coolant accident. Preliminary CFD analysis is conducted to gain information about the helium flow regime transition process from jet to buoyancy plume for forthcoming experimental study. Physical models of impinging jet and wall condensation are validated using separated effect experimental data, firstly. Then helium transportation is analyzed with the effect of jet momentum, buoyancy and wall cooling discussed. Result shows that helium distribution is totally dominated by impinging jet in the beginning, high concentration appears near gas source and wall where jet momentum is strong. With the jet weakening, stable light gas layer without recirculating eddy is established by buoyancy. Transient reversed helium distribution appears due to natural convection resulted from wall cooling, which delays the stratification. It is necessary to concern about hydrogen accumulation in lower space under the containment external cooling strategy. From the perspective of experiment design, measurement point should be set at the height of connecting pipe and near the wall for stratification stability criterion and impinging jet modelling validation.
The purpose of this study is to investigate climatological variations from the temporal and spatial surface particulate organic carbon (POC) estimates based on SeaWiFS spectral radiance, and to determine the physical mechanisms that affect the distribution of pac in the Gulf of Mexico. 7-year monthly mean values of surface pac concentration (Sept. 1997 - Dec. 2004) were estimated from Maximum Normalized Difference Carbon Index (MNDCI) algorithm using SeaWiFS data. Synchronous 7-year monthly mean values of remote sensing data (sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface wind (SSW), sea surface height anomaly (SSHA), precipitation rate (PR)) and recorded river discharge data were used to determine physical forcing factors. The spatial pattern of POC was related to one or more factors such as river runoff, wind-derived current, and stratification of the water column, the energetic Loop Current/Eddies, and buoyancy forcing. The observed seasonal change in the POC plume's response to wind speed in the western delta region resulted from seasonal changes in the upper ocean stratification. During late spring and summer, the low-density river water is heated rapidly at the surface by incoming solar radiation. This lowers the density of the fresh-water plume and increases the near-surface stratification of the water column. In the absence of significant wind forcing, the plume undergoes buoyant spreading and the sediment is maintained at the surface by the shallow pycnocline. However, when the wind speed increases substantially, wind-wave action increases vertical motion, reducing stratification, and the sediment were mixed downward rather than spreading laterally. Maximum particle concentrations over the outer shelf and the upper slope during lower runoff seasons were related to the Loop Current/eddies and buoyancy forcing. Inter-annual differences of POC concentration were related to ENSO cycles. During the El Nino events (1997-1998 and 2002-2004), the higher pac concentrations existed and were related to high runoffs in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but the opposite conditions in the western Gulf of Mexico. During La Nina conditions (1999-2001), low Poe concentration was related to normal or low river discharge, and low PM/nutrient waters in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but the opposite conditions in the western Gulf of Mexico.

An experimental study has been carried out using a rotating water channel in order to investigate the effect of surface roughness on the vertical dispersion of plume within boundary layer. Dispersion measurements of tracers released from two sources with different height at neutral conditions over various rough terrain ranging from rural to urban have been performed. Various values of roughness length were simulated by combining of 4 stream velocities and 3 roughness element conditions. Dispersion measurements have also been made for rough terrain where high buildings are locally concentrated. Values of $\sigma$z increase with roughness and this tendency appears to apply both cases of with and without locally concentrated high buildings. The comparisons of the Bowne's nomogram on $\sigma$2 vs x relationship and the measurements of $\sigma$2 with roughness show good accordance in $\sigma$2 distribution at stability D class over rural, suburban and urban terrain. For constant roughness length the $\sigma$2 values of plumes from lower source height are smaller than those of plumes from higher source at short downwind distance, but this relationship becomes reverse as distance increases. Crossing appears to be made before about 2km. The value of constant I in McMullen's equation $\sigma$2=exp [I+J(In x) + K(In x)2] appears to increase with roughness length, however, the relationships between other constants and roughness have been confirmed. The values of $\sigma$2 for various downwind distances, estimated by using an equation which is employed in ISC (Industrial Source Complex) dispersion model for areas where high buildings are locally assembled, are in accordance with measurements from water channel experiments.

Heat and $SF_6$ gas dispersions over a complex terrain were investigated using wind tunnel. The wind speed, temperature and concentration profiles were measured for the 1/1000 scale complicated terrain model in an Eiffel type boundary layer wind tunnel with test section of 2.5m in height and 4.5m in width. The scale model was mounted on the top of a plate which can rotate with respect to the approaching wind. Dispersion processes from a continuous emission source driven by various wind direction were investigated, including plume climbing over the steep up-slope of the mountain and down-spreading toward the lower level of the valley. Extensive dispersion experiment data (wind speeds and concentration profiles) were provided for verification and validation of dispersion models. Under the identical flow and emission conditions, the independently measured profiles of the temperature and $SF_6$ concentration showed an excellent agreement which ensured the credibility of the results.

The smoke filling process for the atrium space containing a fire source is simulated using two types of deterministic fire modus: Zone model and Field model. The zone mode used is the CFAST(version 1.6) mode developed at the Building and Fire Research laboratories, NIST in the USA. The lied model is a self-developed fire field model based on Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) theories. This article is focused on finding out the smoke movement and temperature distribution in atrium space which is cubic in shape. A computational procedure for predicting velocity and temperature distribution in fro-induced flow is based on the solution, in finite volume method and non-staggered grid system, of 3-dimensional equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy, species and so forth. The fire model i. e. Zone model and Field model predicted similar results for Ire clear height and the smoke layer temperature.

To set the similarity conditions between a prototype usually in the field and its reduced-scale model is a crucial part in model tests. No technique is available to keep perfect similarity for this procedure so far. The experimental work using a wind tunnel is not exceptional. based on the field measurements, the effect of stack parameters and wind conditions on the dispersion of stack plume has been investigated in the laboratory. in this paper intensive methodology is focused on matching these similarities. Due to the limitations to keep perfect similarity conditions some simplifications are involved in common. In this study geometric conditions and kinematic conditions using Froude number and Reynolds number have been con-sidered to keep the similarity conditions required. From the tests it is found that the critical Reynolds number (Recrit) is 2,700 when the height of stack discharge is 50mm. The dispersion has a similar trend for the higher Reynolds number than the critical Reynolds number. It is also found that different Froude number does not make any significant influence for the normalized tracer gas concentrations at the recipient providing the same ratio of the wind speed to the discharge speed. No significant effect of stack diameter is observed in the normalized tracer gas concentrations with the same Frounde number. The similarity conditions therefore used in this study are reliable to simulate the conditions in prototype into the wind tunnel tests.
A series of parametric calculations have been performed in order to investigate the short-term and short-range plume and puff behavior of toxic gaseous and solid pollutant dispersion in an open atmosphere. The simulation is made by the use of the computer program developed by this laboratory, in which a control-volume based finite-difference method is used together with the SIMPLEC algorithm for the resolution of the pressure-velocity coupling appeared In Wavier-Stokes equation. The Reynolds stresses are solved by the standard two-equation k-$\varepsilon$ model modified for buoyancy together with the RNG(Renormalization Group) k-$\varepsilon$ model. The major parameters considered in this calculation are pollutant gas density and temperature, the relative velocity of pollutants to that of the surrounding atmospheric air, and particulate size and density together with the height released. The flow field is typically characterized by the formation of a strong recirculation region for the case of the low density gases such as $CH_4$ and air due to the strong buoyancy, while the flow is simply declining pattern toward the downstream ground for the case of heavy molecule like the $CH_2C1_2$and $CCl_4$, even for the high temperature, $200^{\circ}C$. The effect of gas temperature and velocity on the flow field together with the particle trajectory are presented and discussed in detail. In general, the results are physically acceptable and consistent.

Vent mixer can provide main flow directly into a recirculation region downstream of the mixer to enhance fuel-air mixing efficiency. Based on experimental results of three-dimensional velocity, vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy obtained by a stereoscopic PIV method, the performance of the vent mixer was compared with that of the step mixer which was used as a basic model. Thick shear layers of the vent mixer induced the increase of the penetration height. The turbulent kinetic energy mainly distributed along a boundary layer between the main flow and the jet plume. This turbulent field activates mass transfer in a mixing region, leading to the mixing enhancement.

The temporal variability in near-field mixing characteristics of discharging plumes in oceanic environment was investigated using the time series data of the buoyant jet parameters. Based on the currents and density profiles observed in Masan outfall site and effluent discharge flowrates for 63days of summer season, the temporal variabilities and those occurrence frequency were obtained by line plume equations. The results show that wide range of variability in Masan outfall's mixing characteristics was found due to the temporal changes of effluent flowrates and ambient oceanic conditions. The near-field dilution was in the range of 30~71 with the averaged dilution of 34, which was a good agreement with field measurements of salinity deficit. The length of mixing zone was in the range of 5.4~36.2 m with the average of 9.5 m, and the plume rise height was in the range of 8.1~10.2 m with the average of 8.9 m. However, only the 30~44% of the whole results are higher than the averages, which indicates the necessity of this frequency analysis with the continuously measured data for designing and managing the ocean outfall system.

Vertical distribution and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols above the Korean peninsula are quite important to estimate effects of aerosol on atmospheric environment and regional radiative forcing. For the first time in Korea, vertical microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosol obtained by inversion algorithm were analyzed based on optical data of multi-wavelength Raman lidar system developed by the Advanced Environmental Monitoring Research Center (ADEMRC), Gwangju Institute Science and Technology (GIST). Data collected on 14 June 2004 at Gwangju ($35.10^{\circ}N,\;126.53^{\circ}E$) and 27 May 2005 at Anmyeon island ($36.32^{\circ}N,\;126.19^{\circ}E$) were used as raw optical data for inversion algorithm. Siberian forest fire smoke and local originated haze were observed above and within the height of PBL, respectively on 14 June 2004 according to NOAA/Hysplit backstrajectory analysis. The inversion of lidar optical data resulted in particle effective radii around $0.31{\sim}0.33{\mu}m$, single scattering albedo between $0.964{\sim}0.977$ at 532 nm in PBL and effective radii of $0.27{\mu}m$ and single scattering albedo between $0.923{\sim}0.924$ above PBL. In the case on 27 May 2005, biomass burning from east China was a main source of aerosol plume. The inversion results of the data on 27 May 2005 were found to be particle effective radii between $0.23{\sim}0.24{\mu}m$, single scattering albedo around $0.924{\sim}0.929$ at 532 nm. Additionally, the inversion values were well matched with those of Sun/sky radiometer in measurement period.
