Computational Investigation of the Effect of Various Flight Conditions on Plume Infrared Signature (항공기 비행환경에 따른 플룸 IR 신호 영향성 연구)

  • The plume infrared signature effects at various flight conditions of aircraft were investigated for the purpose of reducing infrared signature level. The nozzle of a virtual subsonic unmanned combat aerial vehicle was designed through a performance analysis. Nozzle and associated plume flowfields were first analyzed using a density-based CFD code and plume IR signature was then calculated on the basis of the narrow-band model. Finally, qualitative information for the plume infrared signature characteristics was obtained through the analysis of the IR signature effects at various flight conditions.

Analysis and Simulation of SF6 Tracer Experiments for Tracking the Pollutant Transport (오염물질 이동 추적을 위한 SF6 추적자 실험 분석과 모사 연구)

  • Tracer experiments were performed 4 times in December 1992 on the relatively flat terrain and nearby building area adjacent to the Taedok Science Town in Korea. Each experiment was continued for relatively short period of 1 or 2 hours with intermittent release of SF6 up to 2.07g/s at 10m height. Movement of tracer plume was tracked by a continuous tracer analyzer installed on an air monitoring van. Simulation with INPUFF was carried out to analyze and predict experiments. Measured profiles of tracer plume were narrow and sharp while predicted profiles by INPUFF were broad and slowly varied. Tracer plumes were detected at a short distance of 0.5 to 2.2 km mainly due to intermittent release and high value of lower detectable limit. Various experimental conditions were tested by INPUFF simulation in order to find desirable conditions. Higher wind speed and less variable wind direction could yield longer distance of plume tracking only when the lower detectable limit was sufficiently low. Distance of plume tracking was long and did not much depend on the lower detectable limit in stable atmospheric conditions.

  • This study regards distributions of flow in the ventilation system used in the kitchen hood in a ship. In this study, for describing the flow in the ventilation system, three-dimensional steady-state turbulence was assumed for the governing equation. When the plume was formed, three gases, CO, CO2, and HCL, in the flow field of the hood were considered as the plume, and it was assumed that the sum of concentrations of the gases was 100%. As a result, it could be confirmed that the plume was smoothly discharged when the flow rate of the supply was ten times lower than that of the exhaust.

  • Two phase flows have been numerically calculated to analyze plume characteristics and liquid circulation in gas injection through a porous plug. The Eulerian approach has been for formulation of both the continuous and dispersed phases. The turbulence in the liquid phase has been modeled using the standard $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The interphase friction coefficient has been calculated using correlations available in the literature. The turbulent dispersion of the phase has been modeled by the "dispersion Prand시 number". The predicted mean flows is compared well with the experimental data. The plume region area and the axial velocities are increased with the gas flow rate and with the decrease in the inlet area. The turbulent intensity also shows the same trend. Also, the space-averaged turbulent kinetic energy for various gas flow rates and inlet areas has been obtained. The results are of interest in the design and operation of a wide variety of materials and chemical processing operations.

  • The oxidizer-rich preburner's combustion tests were fulfilled in the development process of staged combustion cycle rocket engines. The exhaust plume from an oxidizer-rich preburner is relatively transparent because combustion takes place in oxidizer rich state. During hot fire tests a still and infrared images were captured to visualize the plume structure, temperature distribution and so on. In addition, the exhaust plume was numerically investigated to figure out the detailed characteristics. The combustion was not considered for the numerical modeling, but the mixing of exhaust plume with circumstantial air was modeled by species transport model with several turbulence models. The inner structure of plume was configured out by the comparison of numerical results with experimental results, and the validity of applied numerical models was verified.

Lateral Spreading of a River Plume and Transport of Suspended Sediments in the Nakdong Estuary (낙동강하구에서의 하천수 플룸의 횡방향퍼짐과 부유퇴적물의 수송)

  • A hydrodynamic solution for the lateral spreading of a river plume which was developed by assuming a Gaussian distribution of density difference between a turbulent jet river plume and ambient salt water is verified by the field data in the Nakdong river plume. Effect of the river plume on the transport of fine-grained suspended sediment at the Nakdong Estuary is also examined. The analysis of fold data showed a reasonably good correspondence with the theoretical solution adopted in this work Therefore, the hydrodynamic solution can be used as a useful tool in dealing with the lateral spreading of a river plume. The density stratification due to the existence of a river plume seems to cause a retarded settling of the suspended sediments in the water column. and thus a farther transport of the fine sediment is expected than in the normal steady flow.

  • In this study, a plume exhausted from rocket nozzle is investigated by using an unstructured 2-dimensional axisymmetirc DSMC code at various altitude. The small back-pressure to total-pressure ratio($P_b/P_o$) and large $P_b/P_o$ represent low and high altitude condition, respectively. At low altitude, the plume shows a typical complicated structure (e.g. Mach disk) of underexpanded jet while the high altitude plume experiences plain expansion. The various features of exhaust plume is discussed including density, translational/rotational temperature, Mach number and Knudsen number. The results shows that even at 20 km altitude where the freestream Knudsen number is small as $1.5{\times}10^{-5}$, the transitional and rarefied flow regimes can occur locally within the plume. It confirms the necessity of DSMC computation at low altitude.

  • We analyzed the rocket engine flow to check whether the possibility of the ground test and the equipment safety problems in the high altitude engine test facility. The test condition is that the vacuum chamber is open and the coolant water is injected into the supersonic diffuser. The analysis uses two-dimensional axisymmetry with a mixture of plume, air, and cooling water. As a result, the ground test was possible up to the cooling water flow rate of 200 kg/sec. However, due to the back flow of the initial plume, the vacuum chamber is exposed to high temperature, and at the same time, the inside of the vacuum chamber is contaminated due to the reverse flow of the cooling water. Therefore, sufficient insulation measures and work for pollution avoidance should be preceded.

  • To develop technologies for the stable operation of electric propulsion systems, the exhaust plume behavior of electric thrusters was studied using PIC-DSMC(particle-in-cell and direct simulation Monte Carlo). For the numerical analysis, the Simple Electron Fluid Model using Boltzmann relation was employed, and the charge and momentum exchanges due to atom-ion collisions were considered. The results of this study agreed with the plasma potentials measured experimentally. Near the thruster exit, active collisions among particles and charge exchanges created slow ions and fast atoms, which were expected to significantly affect the trajectory and velocity of the thruster exhaust plume.

  • This study was conducted to reduce the computation time required for the computational acoustic analysis of the supersonic rocket jet plume. In order to reduce the computation time, computational acoustic analysis was performed assuming that the supersonic jet plume is a two-dimensional axis-symmetric problem. The results of computational acoustic analysis showed similar results to the acoustic load measurement results. Through this study, it was confirmed that the acoustic load prediction of the supersonic rocket jet plume can be predicted using a two-dimensional axis-symmetric computational analysis.
