  • In Jeju, in order to efficiently manage and coexist fishing boats and passenger ships in narrow ports, it is necessary to establish reasonable policies. The survey was conducted on 99 fishing ports, from December 1 to 31, 2018. A site survey was conducted on 30 parties (15 in Jeju City and 15 in Seogwipo City) concerning with the use of fishing ports in Jeju to review the appropriate conditions for selecting fishing ports as control subjects. The survey determined size of pleasure craft mooring within fishing port (20%), size of fishing boat mooring (20%), and accessibility of fishing port (20%) under on-site survey factors as well as willingness to form a consultative group between fishing boat and pleasure craft users (20%). Upon the request of the survey, positive and negative opinions were collected on the establishment of a safety control center in the fish port. Based on the survey results, the factors mentioned above were applied to each and every fishing port within Jeju. The bottom five fishing ports in Jeju with the lowest total factor scores were identified and selected as control subjects for review and study. Of the five fishing ports selected as control subjects amidst the 99 fishing ports in Jeju, Dodu Fishing Port had the lowest score of 22% among the national fishing harbors. Among the local fishing ports, Hwabuk Fishing Port had the lowest score of 18%, followed by Sagae Fishing Port with a score of 22%. Hamdeok Fishing Port had the lowest score of 24% among the fishing port villages, whereas Ojo Fishing Port had the lowest score of 24% among the small fishing ports.

  • Recently, people's interest in marine leisure has been increasing, and research and development on leisure boats are actively being carried out to pioneer overseas markets. These days, the materials used for leisure boats are fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) and aluminum alloy. However, FRP is hygroscopic and causes environmental problems, and aluminum alloy has high thermal conductivity and fire susceptibility. Therefore, titanium alloy is being adopted as a material for leisure boats instead. In this study, hull thicknesses and design pressures were calculated while considering dynamic effects for titanium boats. Four sets of rules and regulations were used: ISO 12215-5, RINA Pleasure Yacht, LR Special Service Craft, and KR High-speed Light Craft. The maximum bottom slamming loads were in the order of ISO, KR, LR, and RINA, and the required hull thicknesses were in the same order. This research might be helpful for understanding the rules, regulations, and overseas export of leisure boats.

  • As leisure boats become large-scaled and high value-added, their design requirements gradually get more complicated and accordingly their manufacturing processes get more complicated than those of existing ones. Leisure boat builders overseas make efforts to overcome this circumstance by establishing a 3-D model-based design system which is based on the concept of PLM. On the other hand, Korean shipbuilders still remain in the development process of traditional leisure boats which are mainly based on 2-D drawings. There have been some efforts made to have the 3-D model-based design system; however, they belong to a very early stage. This study carried out initial research to apply DMU technology to the development process of leisure boats. It established the design process based on a DMU model and proved its usefulness through a case study on the design of 40-ft class aluminum leisure boats.

  • The structural safety of small craft, such as steel ships and FRP ships, can be estimated using the measurement test of the hull plate thickness or the longitudinal bending strength test. A polyethylene boat is made using inexpensive HDPE and can be mass produced. The structural safety of a polyethylene boat cannot be guaranteed because a polyethylene boat hull is notspecified in the KR technical rules. The inspection procedure of sailing yachts and pleasure boats and drop test method of ISO standard 12215-5 propose the structural strength required for small crafts as the drop test height. Therefore, in this study, the drop test of a polyethylene boat hull was carried out based on the inspection procedure of a sailing yacht and pleasure boat and the drop test method of ISO standard 12215-5. The drop load was acquired by the drop acceleration ofa boat hull. Structural analysis and safety of a polyethylene boat were performed by the drop load and allowable stress criteria. The calculation results of the hull plate thickness by structural design specification of ISO standard 12215-5 showed that polyethylene boat hull was more than two times thicker than a steel ship hull and the boat hull determined by the inspection procedure of sailing yacht and pleasure boat and drop test method of ISO standard 12215-5 was more than 1.2 times thicker than the boat hull determined by structural design specification of ISO standard 12215-5. Therefore, inspection procedure of sailing yachts and pleasure boats and drop test method of ISO standard 12215-5 was much more conservative than the structural design specification of ISO standard 12215-5 and could be used as the structural design method of a polyethylene boat.

  • A 12 m long G/T 4.99 Class Trimaran is now under development at the Center for Transportation System of the Yellow Sea (CTYS) before deployed as a pleasure fishing boat along the west coast of Korean peninsula. The boats will be made of fiber reinforced plastics and equipped with a 360 hp diesel engine and a water jet propulsion system to propel the ship to reach maximum speed of 25knots after fully loaded. Model tests for hull form development of the Trimaran have been done at the towing tank of the Inha University. The influence of the spacing between main hull and outriggers and the longitudinal location of the outriggers have been carefully examined to find the optimal size and locations of the outriggers to improve both the resistance characteristics, and the results are reported in the present paper.

  • As the range of marine leisure activity gradually expands to ocean-going, a habitable cruise boat has been getting the limelight. Advanced countries in the marine leisure industry in Europe and North America have already secured their competitiveness in designing and building cruise boats by elegant design, ergonomic structure and fuel efficiency through the adoption of light-weight hull materials. In contrast, mostly small power boats are developed and built in Korea, and GFRP take up the most of hull materials. This study inquired into the design and characteristics of a 50ft-class CFRP that ocean-going is possible. The hull-form of the CFRP cruise boast were analyzed to propose a hull form for the designed ship (MMU-C.B), and based on that, the design model of the MMU-C.B was built. Finally, the MMU-C.B's characteristics of the resistance performance and hull-planing were found by comparative reviews with the results of model tests of GFRP pleasure yachts.

  • International Organization for Standardization has recently published ISO 12215-5 which is the small craft-hull construction and scantling. According to ISO 12215-5 AnnexB, the scantling determination can be accomplished by drop test for craft with a length $L_H$ of 2.5m up to 6m and single-skin construction. The current method, however, of visual test has the issue where it is difficult to make an objective evaluation of ship body strength. In this study, in order to develop an evaluation system that can make a quantitative evaluation of the drop test of leisure boats, the domestic/foreign regulations on drop test of leisure boats are analyzed and the drop test evaluation system is designed, and the system applicability is reviewed through 5-meter level aluminum ship, and the issues incurred by the state of the ship and the posture while dropping were checked.

  • The Domestic boat has been manufactured by hull form of typical foreign boat. In this study, design environment for polyethylene boat is analysed to create new hull form of the boat and design elements are extracted from existing boats and consumer preferences. Key elements in polyethylene boat design are three words "semi-classic, urban and sporty". Hull resistance and engine power for new developed boat can be expected by Orca 3D program. This result indicates that engine power of the boat is much less than that of commercial boat.

  • Boat or yacht hulls are mainly built using FRP composite materials. FRP boat hull manufacturing has been restricted since 2000 under international regulations on ocean environment safety. FRP composite materials cannot be recycled and require more than 100 years to biodegrade. Therefore, alternatives to FRP have been proposed by many boat builders. Steel, aluminum, and FRP are commonly used as boat hull materials. Their design specifications are proposed as Korean register of shipping. However, the design specifications for inexpensive materials for a small boat have not yet been studied. Small shipbuilders manufacture and sell HDPE canoes or HDPE kayaks. In this study, a hull form was designed based on actual boats. The thickness of an HDPE boat hull was determined based on ISO 12215-5 structural design specifications.
