  • This work presents the experimental and finite element analysis results for the free vibration of 4 edges clamped, isotropic square plates with 2 collinear circular holes. Natural frequencies of finite element analysis are obtained for the complete square plate, the square plates with a central circular hole and the square plates with 2 collinear circulare holes. And natural frequencies are experimentally measured for the complete square plate, the square plate with a central circular hole(d = 150 mm) and the square plates with 2 collinear circular holes. Agreement between experimental and FEM results is excellent. Mode shapes in special case are presented. The conclusions of the study are as follows. There is little variation of nondimensional frequency parameters for the first six mode when the aspect ratio of circular hole is less than 1/6 in the isotropic square plates with 2 collinear circular holes. And the first nondimensional frequency parameter doesn't vary as the aspect ratio of circular hole increase.

  • Buckling, a form of failure happened to plated structures, is investigated in this study. The main focus is to investigate the effects of thickness of the plates having through-thickness holes on buckling when the plate is subjected to in-plane compression. Plates having length of 200mm and width of 100mm are chosen to have thickness in range from 0.50mm to 10mm. Two holes of diameters of 20mm are implemented in plates. The finite element procedure using ABAQUS is applied for analyses. Then using the Gerard and Becker equation compressive buckling coefficients, Kc, are calculated and presented to enable engineers to calculate buckling load for the desired plate with holes in specific dimension. In order to generalize the obtained results, verification analysis has been performed by taking plates having different dimensions from the original ones used in this study. The verification showed the capability of buckling coefficients to predict buckling stresses of plates in various dimensions.

  • The elastic T-stress is increasingly being recognized as an important second parameter to the stress intensity factor for fracture and fatigue assessments. In this paper, the mutual or M-contour integral approach is employed in conjunction with the Boundary Element Method (BEM) to determine the numerical T-stress solutions for cracks in plates with multiple holes. The problems investigated include plates of infinite width with multiple holes at which single or double, symmetric cracks have grown from. Comparisons of these results are also made with the corresponding solutions of finite plates with a single hole. For completeness, stress intensity factor solutions for the cracked geometries analyzed are presented as well. These results will be useful for failure assessments using the two-parameter linear elastic fracture mechanics approach.

  • Anisotropic materials are increasingly required in modern technological applications. Certainly, civil, mechanical and naval engineers frequently deal with the situation of analyzing the dynamical behaviour of structural elements being composed of such materials. For example, panels of anisotropic materials must sometimes support electromechanical engines, and besides, holes are performed in them for operational reasons e.g., conduits, ducts or electrical connections. This study is concerned with the natural frequencies and normal modes of vibration of rectangular anisotropic plates supported by different combinations of the classical boundary conditions: clamped, simply - supported and free, and with additional complexities such holes of free boundaries and attached concentrated masses. A variational approach (the well known Ritz method) is used, where the displacement amplitude is approximated by a set of beam functions in each coordinate direction corresponding to the sides of the rectangular plate. Consequently each coordinate function satisfies the essential boundary conditions at the outer edge of the plate. The influence of the position and magnitude of both hole and mass, on the natural frequencies and modal shapes of vibration are studied for a generic anisotropic material. The classical Ritz method with beam functions as spatial approximation proved to be a suitable procedure to solve a problem of such analytical complexity.

  • The terrorist attacks and dangers by bomb blast have turned into an emerging issue throughout the world and the protection of the people and structures against terrorist acts depends on the prediction of the response of structures under blast and shock load. In this paper, behavior of aluminum and unidirectionally reinforced E-Glass Epoxy composite plates with and without focal circular holes subjected to shock loading has been identified. For isotropic and orthotropic plates (with and without holes) the classical normal mode approach has been utilized as a part of the processing of theoretical results. To obtain the accurate results, convergence of the results was considered and a number of modes were selected for plate with and without hole individually. Using a shock tube as a loading device, tests have been conducted to composite plates to verify the theoretical results. Moreover, peak dynamic strains, investigated by experiments are also compared with the theoretical values and deviation of the results are discussed accordingly. The strain-time histories are likewise indicated for a specific gauge area for aluminum and composite plates. Comparison of dynamic-amplification factors between the isotropic and the orthotropic plates with and without hole has been discussed.

  • Pleasantness or quietness becomes one of the most important factors for residential designs recently. Especially for apartments, the noise generated by falling objects becomes a sensitive issue these days. To overcome the problem of the impact noise in apartments, the floor design has been changed. To reduce the transmissibility of the noise, composite floor structures are devised and implemented for the construction of apartments. In this paper, the noise reduction performance of a composite floor plate with holes is analyzed. Computational modelings for the structures are developed and its performance is evaluated by using the finite element method. The results show that the noise can be well reduced with the multi-layer composite floor plates with holes.

  • One major concern that has occupied the mind of the designers is a structural failure as result of stress concentration in the geometrical discontinuities. Understanding the effective parameters contribute to stress concentration and proper selection of these parameters enables the designer get to a reliable design. In the analysis of perforated isotropic and orthotropic plates, the effective parameters on stress distribution around holes include load angle, curvature radius of the corner of the hole, hole orientation and fiber angle for orthotropic materials. This present paper tries to examine the possible effects of these parameters on stress analysis of infinite perforated plates with central quasi-square hole applying grey wolf optimizer (GWO) inspired by the particular leadership hierarchy and hunting behavior of grey wolves in nature, and also the present study tries to introduce general optimum parameters in order to achieve the minimum amount of stress concentration around this type of hole on isotropic and orthotropic plates. The advantages of grey wolf optimizer are stout, flexible, simple, and easy to be enforced. The used analytical solution is the expansion of Lekhnitskii's solution method. Lekhnitskii applied this method for the stress analysis of anisotropic plates containing circular and elliptical holes. Finite element numerical solution is employed to examine the results of present analytical solution. Results represent that by selecting the aforementioned parameters properly, fewer amounts of stress could be achieved around the hole leading to an increase in load-bearing capacity of the structure.

  • The structures with many perforated openings are widely used as a load-carrying element in the fields of civil engineering works, top slab of prestressed concrete reactor vessel, petrochemical industries and the like. Perforated concrete plates are usually thick. Therefore, the effect of transverse shear deformation is not negligible. This paper describes a new analytical method of perforated plates combining both the finite element method for effective elastic constants and the usual method in solving orthotropic plate with transverse shear deformation.

  • The present work investigates the local heat transfer characteristics and the associated frictional loss in a rectangular channel with inclined solid and perforated baffles to obtain the basic design data for gas turbine. Five different geometries of baffles such as 1) solid (without hole), 2) three holes, 3) six holes, 4) nine holes, 5) twelve holes were covered. A combination of two baffles of same overall size is used. The flow Reynolds number is ranged from 28,900 to 70,100. The placement of baffles augments the overall heat transfer greatly by combining both jet impingement and the boundary layer separation. The present results show that the average Nusselt number distribution is strongly dependent on number of holes in the baffle plates, i.e., the average Nusselt number increases with increasing number of holes. The friction factor decreases also with increasing the number of holes. however. its value increases with increasing the Reynolds number.
