  • The recent technical trend in hot rolling of steel can be described as process and product technologies which have been progressed with modern mill equipment and computers. Precise gauge and width control can be achieved by up-to-date control methods such as AGC and AWC systems. Roll benders and various shape control systems enabled high quality flatness and crown control. Mills can produce higher tensile materials by new process based on process metallurgy. The use of high speed steel rolls and on line roll grinders make the schedule free rolling easier which results in cost saving. Process itself goes toward continuous and simple flow type which has lower operation. Endless rolling and strip casting are examples of the trend. Materials with higher tensile strength and various functions have been developed in last years to meet the customer's needs and this trend will continue.

  • An Eulerian finite element analysis for the steady state rolling process is addressed. This analysis combines the crystal plasticity theory fur texture development as well as the continuum damage mechanics for growth of micro voids. Although an Eulerian analysis for steady state rolling has many advantages, it needs an initial assumption about the shape of control volume. However, the assumed control volume does not match the final shapes. To effectively predict the correct shape in an assumed control volume, a free surface correction algorithm and a streamline technique are introduced. Applications to plate rolling, clad rolling, and shape rolling will be given and the results will be discussed in detail.

  • A full three-dimensional thermo-coupled rigid-viscoplastic finite element method and the currently developed microstructural evolution system which includes semi-empirical equations suggested by different research groups were used together to form an integrated system of process and micro- structure simulation of hot rolling. The distribution and time histroy of the momechanical variables such as temperature, strain, strain rate, and time during pass and between passes were obtained from the finite element analysis of multipass hot rolling processes. The distribution of metallurgical variables were calculated on the basis of instantaneous thermomechanical data. For the verification of this method the evolution of microstructure in plate rolling and shape rolling was simulated and their results were compared with the data available in the literature. Consequently, this approach makes it possible to describe the realistic evolution of microstructure by avoiding the use of erroneous average value and can be used in CAE of multipass hot rolling.

  • J-integral for a subsurface horizontal crack in a circular plate with an inner hole under rolling line contact is evaluated according to loading positions with various load conditions, crack length and crack location. Two-dimensional crack is modeled, and the relation between Tresca stress for uncracked model and J-integral is discussed. The loading location which gives the maximum J-integral depends on load condition and crack location, and the presence of friction force increases Tresca stress and J-integral near the surface. Regardless of friction force, crack location that gives maximum J-integral is the same as that of maximum Tresca stress in an uncracked model, and the value of J-integral is propotional to crack length. It is also showed that the variation of an inner radius of a disk does not effect J-integral value.

  • The deformation behavior of commercial stainless steels under hot rolling conditions was investigated by means of hot compression tests performed in the temperature range 800$^{\circ}C$ to 1200$^{\circ}C$. The measured flow stress-strain curves were analyzed by using a simple flow stress model. It was found that the reference strength of stainless steels are much higher than that of carbon steel and that nitrogen and molybdenum alloying greatly increases flow stress of austenitic stainless steel. Ferritic and duplex stainless steel showed comparatively low flow stresses. The flow stress model, which correlates the flow stress with temperature and strain rate, was applied to predict roll forces during hot-plate rolling of stainless steels.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the fatigue safety and deformation of housing in plate rolling process. For this, we carried out 3-dimensional FEM analysis for housing considering design variations of housing structure. It showed that the housing with rounds under a column is benefits to control thickness accuracy of rolled material, due to smaller elastic deformation and maximum effective stress. Also, we calculated the fatigue safety factors, the ratios of the pulsating equivalent fatigue limit to the maximum tensile stresses analyzed using the equipment force and normal rolling force.

  • This research quantitatively confirmed an acoustical anisotropy that exists in a pure titanium plate from the signal of ultrasonic flow detection and suggested a new way to evaluate the acoustical anisotropy by inputting acquired characteristic of ultrasound signal into the neutral network. Using the fact with the suggested method that the characteristic of ultrasound signal is shown differently depending on the pure titanium plate's rolling direction, the neural network was constructed by extracting the characteristic that can decide each direction of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$ with waveform analysis program. As a result of inputting the characteristic of ultrasound signal acquired from a random rolling direction into the neural network that was built like this, it showed a pattern recognition rate higher than 95% on directions of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$.

  • This study intends to assess the defect in the weld zone of titanium grade 2 plate in terms of acoustical anisotropy based on the angle beam method. Depending on the rolling direction, the ratio of wave velocity was found to be 1.08 and the difference in the angle of refraction was more than seven degrees, confirming the presence of acoustical anisotropy. Thus for measuring the length of defect in the weld zone of the titanium plate (thickness of 10mm), the distance amplitude characteristics curves of titanium, TDACC-R and TDACC-T were constructed for the measurements in consideration of the acoustical anisotropy on CRT of the ultrasonic testing equipment. As a result, when the distance amplitude characteristics curve corresponds to the rolling direction, the length of defect was close to the actual measurement within 1mm and when different, the difference was found to be over 4mm. It was affirmed that the acoustical anisotropy should be taken into consideration when measuring the length of defects in the weld zone of the titanium plate with the presence of acoustical anisotropy.

  • In this paper, we present IGBT VVVF inverters as a 1C1M propulsion system for electric car. These inverters are composed of high power IGBT's and controlled by compact control units. The control unit performs full digital control by using 32bit DSP and microcontroller. By using CAN-bus, high speed network is constructed within four control units. The stack is simplified and optimized by using plate bus and IGBT driver units of hybrid-type.
