  • This paper presents the novel work for source localization of serial multiple impacts in a plate sructure. It is difficult to identify the source of serial multiple impacts with the current source localization techenology(SLT) because of the overlapping of dispersive wave induced by multiple impacts and the reflaction from the edge of the plate. In this paper, the new method is suggested for source localization. The method is developed based on the SLT with pre-signal processing such as some limitation for the selection of three sensors, the frequency range for TFA and impact time interval. Results from numerical simulation and experiment in isotropic plate structure are presented, which show the capability of the proposed method.

  • This paper is concerned with investigating the plastic material properties of steel plate formed by line heating method, and is aimed at implementing more rational design considering the accidental limit states such as collision or grounding. For the present study, line heating test for marine grade steel plate has been carried out with varying plate thickness and heating speed, and then microscopic examination and tensile test have been carried out. From the microscopic, it is found that the grain refined zones like ferrite and pearlite are formed all around the heat affected zone. From the tensile test results, it is seen that yield strength, tensile strength, fracture strain, hardening exponent and strength coefficient vary with plate thickness and heat input quantity. The formulae relating the material properties and heat input parameter should be, therefore, derived for the design purpose considering the accidental impact loading. This paper ends with describing the extension of the present study.

  • One of the key issues affecting the promotion of solar water heaters in Taiwan is the severe impact of typhoon each year. An experimental study was conducted to investigate the wind uplift characteristic of a solar collector model with and without a guide plate. The guide plate with different lengths and orientations with respect to wind direction was adopted. It is found that the wind uplift of a solar collector is associated with the tilt angle of the flat panel as expected. A cavity formed between the guide plate and the flat panel has a significant effect on the distributions of streamwsie and lateral pressure. Reduction in uplift is essentially coupled with the projected area of a guide plate on the lower surface of the tilt flat panel.

  • Impact forces induced by external object collisions can cause serious damages to civil engineering structures. While accurate and prompt identification of such impact forces is a critical task in structural health monitoring, it is not readily feasible for civil structures because the force measurement is extremely challenging and the force location is unpredictable for full-scale field structures. This study proposes a novel approach for identification of impact force including its location and time history using a small number of multi-metric observations. The method combines an augmented Kalman filter (AKF) and Genetic algorithm for accurate identification of impact force. The location of impact force is statistically determined in the way to minimize the AKF response estimate error at measured locations and then time history of the impact force is accurately constructed by optimizing the error co-variances of AKF using Genetic algorithm. The efficacy of proposed approach is numerically demonstrated using a truss and a plate model considering the presence of modelling error and measurement noises.

  • Wall interactions of direct injection spray were investigated using laser-sheet imaging, shadowgraphy, wetted footprint and phase Doppler interferometry techniques. A narrow-cone high-pressure swirl injector is used to inject iso-octane fuel onto a plate, which has three different impact angles inside a pressurized chamber. Heated air and plate conditions were compared with unheated cases. Injection interval was also varied in the heated case to compare dry- and wet- wall impingement behaviors. High-speed macroscopic Mie-scattering images showed that presence of wall and air temperature has only minor effect on the bulk spray structure and penetration speed for the narrow-cone injector tested. The overall bulk motions of the spray plume and its spatial position at a given time are basically unaffected until a few millimeters before impacting the wall. The surface properties of the impact surface, such as the temperature, the presence of a preexisting liquid film also have a small effect on the amount of wetting or the wetted footprint; however, they have strong influence on what occurs just after impact or after a film is formed. The shadowgraph in particular shows that the plate temperature has a significant effect on vapor phase propagation. Generally, 10-20% faster horizontal vapor phase propagation is observed along the wall at elevated temperature condition. For impingement onto a preexisting film, more splash and evaporation were also observed. Contrary to some preconceptions, there is no significant splashing and droplet rebounding from surfaces that are interposed in the path of the DI gasoline spray, especially for the oblique impact angle cases. There also appears to be a dense spray front consists of large sac spray droplets in the oblique impact angle cases. The bulk of the spray is not impacted on the surface, but rather is deflected by it The microscopic details as depicted by phase Doppler measurements show that the outcome of the droplet impaction events can be significantly influenced. Only droplets at the spray front have high enough Weber numbers for wall impact to wet, splash or rebound. Using the sign of vertical velocity, the time-resolved downward droplets and upward droplets are compared. The Weber number of upward moving droplets, which seldom exceeds unity, also decreases as the impact angle decreases, as the droplets tend to impact less and move along the wall in the deflected spray plume.

  • This study analyzes the dynamic fracture phenomenon that aluminum rod impacts aluminum plate or rigid plate and deforms. The value of von-Mises stress in the instance that aluminum rod deforms on rigid plate after contact becomes 1.3 times as large as that in the instance of contact. On the contrary, the value of von-Mises stress in the instance that aluminum rod goes through aluminum plate after contact becomes 0.7 times as small as that in the instance of contact. The value of internal energy in the instance that aluminum rod contacts aluminum plate becomes 2.3 times as large as that in the instance that aluminum rod contacts rigid plate. But the value of kinetic energy in the instance that aluminum rod contacts aluminum plate becomes 0.9 times as small as that in the instance that aluminum rod contacts rigid plate. The value of internal energy in the instance that aluminum rod goes through aluminum plate after contact becomes 0.7 times as small as that in the instance that aluminum rod impacts rigid plate and deforms. And the value of sliding energy in the instance that aluminum rod contacts aluminum plate becomes 0.2 times as small as that in the instance that aluminum rod contacts rigid plate. The value of total energy in case that aluminum rod impacts aluminum plate becomes 0.9 times as small as that in the case that aluminum rod impacts rigid plate.

  • In this paper, a experimental and theoretical study is carried out on the hydroelastic vibration for a rectangular bottom and side plate of tank. It is assumed that the tank wall is clamped along the plate edges. The fluid velocity potential is used for the simulation of fluid domain and to obtain the added mass due to plate vibration. It is assumed that the fluid is imcompressible and inviscid. Assumed mode method is utilized to the plate model and hydrodynamic force is obtained by the proposed approach. The coupled natural frequencies are obtained from the relationship between kinetic energies of a wall including fluid and the potential energy of the wall. The theoretical result is compared with the three-dimensional finite element method. In order to verify the result, modal test was carried out for bottom/side plate of tank model by using impact hammer. It was found the fundamental natural frequency of bottom plate is lower than that of side plate of tank and theoretical result was in good agreement with that of commercial three-dimensional finite element program.

  • We investigated the protection capability of a plate against high speed projectiles demonstrating collision and penetration behaviors by finite element analysis. The element erosion method was used for penetration analysis, which showed that the speed of the projectile was slightly reduced by the collision with the protection plate. Protection capability was measured by the projectile's attitude angle change because the damage of our tanks by projectiles was also dependent on the projectile-tank collision angle. When the length of the protection plate was sufficiently long, the projectile was severely deformed and incapacitated. In the case of a small plate, the projectile was deformed only in the collision region. Thus, projection capability was investigated by the change of attitude angle. The effect of collision angle, velocity, and length of the plate on the rotational and vertical velocities of the projectile was investigated.

  • This work aims to explore the static behaviour of a tapered functionally graded porous plate (FGPP) with even and uneven porosity distributions resting on two parametric elastic foundations. The plate under investigation is subjected to bi-sinusoidal loading and the edges of the plate are exposed to different combinations of edge restrictions. In order to examin the static behaviour, bending factors (BF) related to bending and normal stresses have been evaluated using classical plate theory. To achieve this, the governing equations have been derived employing the energy concept. And to solve it, the Rayleigh-Ritz method with an algebraic function has been utilised; it is simple, precise, and computationally intensive. After convergence and validation analyses, new findings are made available. The BF of the plate have been exhaustively examined to explain the influence of aspect ratios, material property index, porosity factor, taper factor, and Winkler and Pasternak stiffness. It is observed that the BF of an elastically supported FGPP are influenced by the index of material propery and the aspect ratio. Findings also indicate that the impact of porosity is more when it is spread evenly, as opposed to when it is unevenly distributed. Further, the deformed plate's structure is significantly influenced by the different thickness variations. Examination of bending characteristics of FGPP having different new cases of thickness variations with different types of porosity distribution under fifteen different mixed edge constraints is the prime novality of this work. Results presented are reliable enough to be taken into account for future studies.
