  • The analysis of interfacial stresses in structural component has been the subject of several investigations but it still requires more effort and studies. In this study a general three-dimensional interface element has been formulated for stress and displacement analyses in the interfacial area between two adjacent plate bending element and brick element. Interface element has 16 nodes with 5 degrees of freedom (DOF) in each node adjacent to plate bending element and 3 DOF in each node adjacent to brick element. The interface element has ability to transfer three translations from each side of interface element and two rotations in the side adjacent to the plate element. Stiffness matrix of this element was formulated and implemented in three-dimensional finite element code. Application of this element to the reinforced concrete (RC) beam strengthened with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) including variation of deflection, slip between plate and concrete, normal and shear stresses distributions in FRP plates have been verified using experimental and numerical work of strengthened RC beams carried out by some researchers. The results show that this interface element is effective and can be used for structural component with these types of interface elements.

  • In the present paper, we offer a new flat shell finite element. It is the result of the combination of a membrane element and a bending element, both based on the strain-based formulation. It is known that $C^{\circ}$ plane membrane elements provide poor deflection and stress for problems where bending is dominant. In addition, they encounter continuity and compliance problems when they connect to C1 class plate elements. The reach of the present work is to surmount these problems when a membrane element is coupled with a thin plate element in order to construct a shell element. The membrane element used is a triangular element with four nodes, three nodes at the vertices of the triangle and the fourth one at its barycenter. Each node has three degrees of freedom, two translations and one rotation around the normal. The coefficients related to the degrees of freedom at the internal node are subsequently removed from the element stiffness matrix by using the static condensation technique. The interpolation functions of strain, displacements and stresses fields are developed from equilibrium conditions. The plate element used for the construction of the present shell element is a triangular four-node thin plate element based on Kirchhoff plate theory, the strain approach, the four fictitious node, the static condensation and the analytic integration. The shell element result of this combination is robust, competitive and efficient.

  • This research analyzes the dynamic stability of stiffened plates on elastic foundations using the finite element method. For analyzing the stiffened plates, both the Mindlin plate theory and Timoshenko beam-column theory were applied. In application of the finite element method, 8-nodes serendipity element system and 3-nodes finite element system were used for plate and beam elements, respectively Elastic foundations were modeled as the Pasternak foundations in which the continuity effect of foundation is considered. In order to verify the theory of this study, solutions obtained by this analysis were compared with the classical solutions in open literature and experimental solutions. The dynamic stability legions of stiffened plates on Pasternak foundations were determined according to changes of in-plane stresses, foundation parameters and dimensions of stiffener.

  • This paper has the object of investigating dynamic stability of opening thick plates on Pasternak foundation by means of finite element method and providing Kinematic design data for mat of building structures. Finite element analysis of Tapered Thick plate is done by use of rectangular (mite element with 8-nodes. In order to analysis plate which is supported on Pasternak foundation, the Winkler foundation parameter is varied with $10^2,\;10^3$ and the shear foundation parameter is 5, 10. The ratio of In-plane force to critical load is applied as 0.4, 0.6, respectively. This paper analyzed varying Tapered Ratio.

  • We discuss finite element approximation and use a Mindlin plate element based upon uniformly reduced numerical integration. The finite element selected for use in this work is a four-node, bilinear displacement element based upon the Mindlin theory of plates. Such elements show good accuracy for laminated composite plates when reduced numerical integration is used to evaluate the element marices. This study presents both the experimental and F.E. results for the natural frequencies of CFRPURETHANE-CFRP Composite plate. Good agreement between experimental and calculated frequencies is achived.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study shear locking-free analysis of thick plates using Mindlin's theory and to determine the effects of the thickness/span ratio, the aspect ratio and the boundary conditions on the linear responses of thick plates subjected to uniformly distributed loads. Finite element formulation of the equations of the thick plate theory is derived by using higher order displacement shape functions. A computer program using finite element method is coded in C++ to analyze the plates clamped or simply supported along all four edges. In the analysis, 8- and 17-noded quadrilateral finite elements are used. Graphs and tables are presented that should help engineers in the design of thick plates. It is concluded that 17-noded finite element converges to exact results much faster than 8-noded finite element, and that it is better to use 17-noded finite element for shear-locking free analysis of plates. It is also concluded, in general, that the maximum displacement and bending moment increase with increasing aspect ratio, and that the results obtained in this study are better than the results given in the literature.

  • This paper has the objects of deciding dynamic instability regions of thick plates on inhomogeneous Pasternak foundation by finite element method and providing kinematic design data for mats and slabs of building structures. In this paper, dynamic stability analysis of tapered opening thick plate is done by use of Serendipity finite element with 8 nodes considering shearing strain of plate. To verify this finite element method, buckling stress and natural frequencies of thick pate with or without in-plane stress are compared with existing solutions. The results are as follow that this finite element solutions with $4{\times}4$ meshes are shown the error of maximum 0.56% about existing solutions, and the larger foundation parameters, the farther dynamic instability regions are from vertical axis of graph presented relation of ${\beta}\;and\;\overline{\omega}/\omega$.

  • In this study, free vibration analysis of laminated composite parabolic thick plate frames by using finite element method is introduced. Governing equations of an eigenvalue problem are obtained from First Order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT). Finite element method is employed to obtain natural frequency values from the governing differential equations. The frames consist of two flat square plates and one singly curved plate. Parameters like radii of curvature, aspect ratio, ply orientation and boundary conditions are investigated to understand their effect on dynamic behavior of such a structure. In addition, multi-bay structures of such geometry with different stacking order are also taken into account. The composite frame structures are also modeled and simulated via ANSYS to verify the accuracy of the present study.

  • The paper is concerned with the behavior of tapered steel plate girders, primarily subjected to shear loading; experimental as well as finite element results obtained from the studies are presented in this paper. In the experimental study, 11 large-scale girders, one of uniform section and 10 tapered, were tested to failure and all girders were analysed by finite element method. The results are compared and the accuracy of the finite element modeling established. A parametric study was carried out with thickness of web, loading direction and taper angle as parameters. An analytical model, based on Cardiff model for girders of uniform cross-section, is also proposed in the paper.
