  • Modern codes for earthquake resistant building design require consideration of the so-called accidental design eccentricity, to account for torsional response caused by several factors not explicitly considered in design. This provision requires that the mass centres in the building floor be moved a certain percentage of the building's dimension (usually 5%) along both the x and y axes and in both positive and negative directions. If one considers also the spatial combinations of the two component motion in a dynamic analysis of the building, the number of required analyses and combinations increases substantially, causing a corresponding work load increase for practicing structural engineers. Another shortcoming of this code provision is that its introduction has been based primarily on elastic results from investigations of oversimplified, hence questionable, one story building models. This problem is addressed in the present paper using four groups of eccentric braced steel buildings, designed in accordance with Eurocodes 3 (steel) and 8 (earthquake design), with and without accidental eccentricities considered. The results indicate that although accidental design eccentricities can lead to somewhat reduced inelastic response demands, the benefit is not significant from a practical point of view. This leads to suggestions that accidental design eccentricities should probably be abolished or perhaps replaced by a simpler and more effective design provision, at least for torsionally stiff buildings that constitute the vast majority of buildings encountered in practice.

  • We herewith report for the effect of dielectric surface modification on the electrical characteristics of organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). The kist-jm-1 as an organic molecule for the surface modification is deposited onto the surface of zirconium oxide ($ZrO_2$) gate dielectric layer. The OTFTs are elaborated on the flexible plastic substrates through 4-level mask process to yield a simple fabrication process. In this work, we also have examined the dependence of electrical performance on the interface surface state of gate dielectric/pentacene, which may be modified by chemical properties in the gate dielectric surface.

  • This work has been investigated in order to study the influence of the moisture absorption on the mechanical pf the glass fiber/epoxy resein composites and the carbon fiber/epoxy resein composites. The types of glass fiber used in the glass fiber/epoxy resein composites were randomly oriented fiber and plain fabric fiber. And carbon fiber.epoxy resein composites was laminated with fabric prepreg which was formed with carbon fiber and epoxy resein. Both composites were immersed up to 100 days in distilled water at $80^{\circ}C$, and then dried up to 3 days in an oven at 80$80^{\circ}C$. Both composites were measured for the weight gain of water(wt.%) and tensile strength through immersion and dry time. Consequently, it was found that the tensile strength of thw glass fiber/epoxy resein composites and the carbon fiber/epoxy resein composites were reduced proportionally to the moisture absortion rate. Also, the tensile strength of glass fiber composites was decreased more than that of the carbon fiber composites. Additionally, it was found that the tensile strength of all composites which decreased by moisture absorption were partly recovered by drying in an oven at 80$80^{\circ}C$.

  • Column base is very important part of steel structure because it transmits load to foundation in structure. Column base which is used frame construction in the inside and outside of the country is distributed into exposed-type, concrete encased and imbeded-type. Exposed-type column base is most profitable, if consider reuse and recycle of elements first of all. In this study, we proposed a new style exposed-type column base improved in performance for construction work and mechanical performance.

  • Interfacial properties and microfailure modes of electrodeposition (ED) treated carbon fiber reinforced polyetherimide (PEI) toughened epoxy composite were investigated using microdroplet test and the measurement of surface wettability. As PEI content increased, Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) increased due to enhanced toughness and plastic deformation of PEI. In the untreated case, IFSS increased with adding PEI content, and IFSS of pure PEI matrix showed the highest. On the other hand, for ED-treated case IFSS increased with PEI content with rather low improvement rate. The work of adhesion between fiber and matrix was not directly proportional to IFSS for both the untreated and ED-treated cases. The matrix toughness might contribute to IFSS more likely than the surface wettability. Interfacial properties of epoxy-PEI composite can be affected efficiently by both the control of matrix toughness and ED treatment.

  • In order to produce high-quality optical components, aspheric lenses have been widely applied in recent years. An aspheric lens consists of aspheric surfaces instead of spherical ones, which causes difficulty in the design process as well as the manufacturing procedure. Although injection molding is widely used to fabricate optical lenses owing to its high productivity, there remains lots of difficulty to determine appropriate mold design factors and injection molding parameters. In the injection molding fields, computer simulation has been effectively applied to analyze processes based on the shell analysis so far. Considering the geometry of optical lenses, a full-3d simulation based on solid elements has been reported as a reliable approach. The present work covers three-dimensional injection molding simulation and relevant deformation analysis of an injection molded plastic lens based on 3d solid elements. Numerical analyses have been applied to the injection molding processes of three aspheric lenses for an image sensing module of a mobile phone. The reliability of the proposed approach has been verified in comparison with the experimental results.

  • Bipolar plate is the main part with MEA in automotive PEMFC. It must have a good electrical conductivity and excellent corrosion resistance, be cost effective. Therefore, stainless steels have been studied by many researchers because of its corrosion resistance and cost benefits. But their properties are not sufficient for the application to bipolar plate for automotive PEMFC. In this work, we have performed stamping using various commercial stainless steels to select candidate material for biploar plate and to derive design parameters for stamping simulation. The results showed that a small curvature at the corner of flow field is more favorable due to easier a plastic deformation. Stamping process was simulated by changing surface condition, and the size and angle of channel. The optimum shape and spring back phenomena were evaluated. Surface coating was applied to increase the corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity of stainless steel. The electrical interfacial resistance was 10 to $15m{\Omega}cm^2$ under clamping force of 150psi. But corrosion resistance of coating on the stainless steel was not good due to the unstableness of microstructure.

  • In this work, computer-aided process design is carried out to develop an optimal preform of a pressure vessel. Knowledge-based rules are employed to design the preform, and they are formulated using the handbooks of plasticity theories. In the FE-analysis, a commercial finite element code, ABAQUS was employed. Axisymmetric deep drawing of a hemisphere-bottomed cup has been analyzed fur various combinations of die design parameters. The length of the land of die, the clearance between punch and die and the clearance between the blank holder and die are optimized to minimize the forming load. The results of the simulations are verified with the experiments which are scaled down to one tenth of the actual size.

  • Traditional theories of the tensile failure of paper have assumed that uniform strain progresses throughout the sheet until an imperfection within the structure causes a catastrophic break. The resistance to tensile elongation is assumed to be elastic , at first, throughout the structure, followed by an overall plastic yield. However, linear image strain analysis (LISA) has demonstrated that the yield in tensile loading of paper is quite non-uniform throughout the structure, Traditional theories have failed to define the flaws that trigger catastrophic failure. It was assumed that a shive or perhaps a low basis weight area filled that role. Studies of the fracture mechanics of paper have typically utilized a well-defined flaw around which yield and failure could be examined . The flaw was a simple razor cut normal to the direction of tensile loading. Such testing is labeled mode I analysis. The included fla in the paper was always normal to the tensile loading direction, never at another orientation . However, shives or low basis weight zones are likely to be at random angular orientations in the sheet. The effects of angular flaws within the tensile test were examined. The strain energy density theory and experimental work demonstrate the change in crack propagation from mode I to mode IIas the initial flaw angle of crack propagation as a function of the initial flaw angle is predicted and experimentally demonstrated.
