Candidate coating materials for re-usable metallic nuclear fuel crucibles, TaC, TiC, ZrC, $ZrO_2$, and $Y_2O_3$, were plasmasprayed onto a niobium substrate. The microstructure of the plasma-sprayed coatings and thermal cycling behavior were characterized, and U-Zr melt interaction studies were carried out. The TaC and $Y_2O_3$ coating layers had a uniform thickness, and high density with only a few small closed pores showing good consolidation, while the ZrC, TiC, and $ZrO_2$ coatings were not well consolidated with a considerable amount of porosity. Thermal cycling tests showed that the adhesion of the TiC, ZrC, and $ZrO_2$ coating layers with niobium was relatively weak compared to the TaC and $Y_2O_3$ coatings. The TaC and $Y_2O_3$ coatings had better cycling characteristics with no interconnected cracks. In the interaction studies, ZrC and $ZrO_2$ coated rods showed significant degradations after exposure to U-10 wt.% Zr melt at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 15 min., but TaC, TiC, and $Y_2O_3$ coatings showed good compatibility with U-Zr melt.
$Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_x$(Bi-2212) and $Bi_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O_y$(Bi-2223) high-Tc superconductors(HTS) have been manufactured by plasma spraying, partial melt process(PMP) and annealing treatment(AT). A Bi-2212/2223 HTS coating layer was synthesized through the peritectic reaction between a 0212 oxide coating layer and 2001 oxide coating layer by the PMP-AT process. The 2212 HTS layer consists of whiskers grown in the diffusion direction. The Bi-2223 phase and secondary phase in the Bi-2212 layer were observed. The secondary phase was distributed uniformly over the whole layer. As annealing time goes on, the Bi-2212 phase decreases with mis-orientation and irregular shape, but the Bi-2223 phase increases because a new Bi-2223 phase is formed inside the pre-existing Bi-2212 crystals, and because of the nucleation of a Bi-2223 phase at the edge of Bi-2212 crystals by diffusion of Ca and Cu-O bilayers. In this study the spray coated layer showed superconducting transitions with an onset Tc of about both 115 K, and 50 K. There were two steps. Step 1 at 115 K is due to the diamagnetism of the Bi-2223 phase and step 2 at 50 K is due to the diamagnetism of the Bi-2212 phase.

We performed plasma spraying for 2001 (Bi:Cu = 2:1), 0212 (Sr:Ca:Cu = 2:1:2) oxide powders. $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2Ox$ (2212) superconductor has been prepared by PMP-AT (partial melting process-annealing treatment). The 2212 phase is synthesized between Sr-Ca-Cu oxide coating layer (0212) and Bi-Cu oxide coating layer (2001) by movement of partial melted Bi on 2001 layer and the diffusion reaction (Cu, Sr, Ca) after PMP-AT. There are two different coating layers on joining process. The one is ABAB coating layers and the other is BAAB coating layers by arrangement of 2001 (A), 0212 (B) layers. We performed heat treatment these two different coating layers processes under same PMP-AT conditions. We obtained Bi-2212 superconducting layers at each experimental condition, and the result of MPMS, the critical temperature was showed about 78 K. But the microstructure images and result of EDS as each experimental variable were showed about the qualitatively different Bi-2212 superconducting phases. We also deduced the generation mechanism of Bi-2212 superconducting layer as a result of these experimental data, microstruc ture images, EDS data and phase diagram.
Ti-Ni alloys are widely used in numerous biomedical applications (e.g., orthodontics, cardiovascular science, orthopaedics) due to their distinctive thermomechanical and mechanical properties, such as the shape memory effect, superelasticity and low elastic modulus. In order to increase the biocompatibility of Ti-Ni alloys, many surface modification techniques, such as the sol-gel technique, plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII), laser surface melting, plasma spraying, and chemical vapor deposition, have been employed. In this study, a Ti-49.5Ni (at%) alloy was electrochemically etched in 1M $H_2SO_4$+ X (1.5, 2.0, 2.5) wt% HF electrolytes to modify the surface morphology. The morphology, element distribution, crystal structure, roughness and energy of the surface were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive Xray spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle analysis. Micro-sized pores were formed on the Ti-49.5Ni (at%) alloy surface by electrochemical etching with 1M $H_2SO_4$+ X (1.5, 2.0, 2.5) wt% HF. The volume fractions of the pores were increased by increasing the concentration of the HF electrolytes. Depending on the HF concentration, different pore sizes, heights, surface roughness levels, and surface energy levels were obtained. To investigate the osteoblast adhesion of the electrochemically etched Ti-49.5Ni (at%) alloy, a MTT test was performed. The degree of osteoblast adhesion was increased at a high concentration of HF-treated surface structures.

Thermal Barrier Coating with Functional Gradient Materials (FGM-TBC) can play an important role to protect the parts from harmful environments in high temperatures such as oxidation, corrosion, and wear and to improve the efficiency of aircraft engine by lowering the surface temperature on turbine blade. FGM-TBC can increase the life spans of product and improve the operating properties. Therfore, in this study the evaluations of mechanical and thermal properties of FGM-TBC such as fatigue, oxidation and wear-resistance at high temperatures have been conducted. The samples of both the TBC with 2, 3, 5 layers (YSZ/NiCrAlY) to be produced by Air Plasma Spray method (APS) and the bulk TBC with 6 layers to be produced by Plasma Assisted Sintering method (PAS) were used. Furthermore, residual stress, bond strength, and thermal conductivity were evaluated. The average thickness of the APS was 500$\mu\textrm{m}$ to 600$\mu\textrm{m}$ and the average thickness of the PAS was 3mm. The hardness number of the top layer of APS was 750 Hv to 810Hv and that of PAS was 950 Hv to 1440Hv. The $ZrO_2$ coating layer of APS was composed of tetragonal structure after spraying as the result of XRD analysis. As shown in the results of the high temperature wear test, the 3 layer coating of APS had the best wear resistance at $800^{\circ}C$ and the 5 layer coating of APS had the best wear resistance at $600^{\circ}C$. But, these coatings had the tendency of the low-temperature softening at $300^{\circ}C$. The main mechanism of wear was the adhesive wear and the friction coefficient of coatings was increased as increasing the test temperatures. A s results of thermal conductivity test, the ${\Delta}T$ of the APS coating was increased as number of layer and the range of thermal conductivity of the PAS was $800^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$.

The development of a new material which should be continuously usable under severe environment of very high temperature has been urgently requested. The conventional thermal barrier coating(TBC) is a two layer coating, but a composition and a microstructure of functionally graded material(FGM) are varied continuously from place to place in ways designed to provide it with the maximum function of mitigating the induced thermal stress. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the heat-resistant characteristics by thermal shock of laser and furnace heating. The fracture behaviors of non-FGM(NFGM) and FGM were investigated based on acoustic emission(AE) technique during thermal shock test. Therefore, it can be concluded that FGM gives higher thermal resistance compared to NFGM by AE signal and fracture surface analysis.
High velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spraying was used to coat Ti(Al,O)/$Al_2O_3$ powder onto the SS41 steel plate. Macrostructure of the coated specimen has been investigated by scanning electron micrograph (SEM). High temperature oxidation behavior of the coated specimen and SS41 steel have been studied. From the results of SEM observation, Ti(Al,O)/$Al_2O_3$ powder was coated well onto the substrate SS41 steel. Porosity onto the coated layer was only 0.38%. The oxidation results showed that Ti(Al,O)/$Al_2O_3$ powder coated SS41 steel have improved little oxidation resistance at $900^{\circ}C$ in air, but improved remarkably oxidation resistance at $800^{\circ}C $ in air compare to the substrate SS41 steel.

In this study, we devoted to kinetic measurement of the catalytic oxidation of iron-containing flame soot particles and better understanding the role of catalytic particles on carbon oxidation in particular at low temperature, targeting on autothermal regeneration of diesel particulate filter by diesel exhaust gas. Carbon-based Fe-containing particles generated by spraying ferrocene-doped diesel fuel in an oxy-hydrogen flame are tested and compared with a commercial carbon black powder for thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Induced coupled plasma-Atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). As a result, we found that a small amount of the ferrocene addition led to significant reductions in a on-set temperature and an activation energy of the carbon oxidation as well. An oxygenated surface complex forming at the particle surface could be thought as active species that would be readily consumed in particular at low temperature.
The paraoxonase (E. C. 3.1.1.2) is a major enzyme to detoxicate the organophosphorus and carbamate which are the most widely used as the agricultural spraying insecticides. To investgate the distributions of plasma paraoxonase activity and the factors affecting the enzyme activity, the plasmas of 945 Korean rural population were analysed with the modified Krisch's direct sphectrphotometry method. Three indices of the enzyme activity - basal activity, stimulated activity (by NaCl), % stimulation - were obtained from the analysis. Three indicies suggested unimodal distributions, so we couldn't identify the low activity group risk group to organophosphorus & carbamate insecticides poisoning. There is no significant relation between 3 actvity indicies and sex, age, or history of insecticide use (p>0.05). The basal activity and the stimulated activity have significant relationship and high coefficient of determination with the activities of their parents ($r^2$=0.30, 0.24 ; p<0.05), but the % stimulation does not ($r^2$=0.02 ; p<0.05). These results suggest that the activity of paraoxonase is determined mainly by the genetic factor.
Commercial flake graphite cast iron substrate was coated with titanium powder by low pressure plasma spraying and was irradiated with a $CO_2$ laser to produce the wear resistant composite layer. From the experimental results of this study, it was possible to composite TiC particles on the surface layer by direct reaction between carbon existed in the cast iron matrix and titanium with thermal sprayed coating by remelting and alloying them using laser irradiation. The cooling rate of laser remelted cast iron substrate without titanium coating was about $1{\times}10^4$ K/s to $1{\times}10^5$ K/s in the order under the condition used in this study. The microstructure of alloyed layer consisted of three zones, that is, TiC particule crystallized zone (MHV $400{\sim}500$), the mixed zone of TiC particule+ledebulite (MHV $650{\sim}900$) and the ledebulite zone (MHV $500{\sim}700$). TiC particules were crystallized as a typical dendritic morphology. The secondary TiC dendrite arms were grown to the polygonized shape and were necking. And then the separated arms became cubic crystal of TiC at the slowly solidified zone. But in the rapidly solidified zone of fusion boundry, the fine granular TiC particules were grouped like grape.
