A recently introduced plantain species in Korea: Plantago aristata (Plantaginaceae) (미기록 귀화식물: Plantago aristata (Plantaginaceae))

  • We reported that an alien species of Plantaginaceae, Plantago aristata Michx. from North America, grows at the Han-River estuary in Go-Yang City, Kyunggi Province. This species is easily distinguished from others in Korea by its linear leaves, cylindrical spikes with long linear bracts at base, and relatively large flowers of ca. 4-6 mm in diameter. We called the species as gin-po-ggot-jil-kyung-i as a local name. Plantago aristata is known to be very invasive and has been already introduced to Japan and China.

  • An alien plant of unrecoreded Kickxia (Plantaginaceae) was found in Korea. K. eltine (L.) Dumort. was distirbuted in Yangju-si, Gyoenggi-do and Yeongcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. This species can be distinguished from the other related genera by having stems that trail along the groud without putting down roots, and the leaves are sagittate, or shaped like arrowheads with longer, narrower, pointed lobes opposite the shorter tip. The new Korean names is given, as 'Hae-ran-cho-a-jae-bi' to Kickxia elatine (L.) Dumort. Here, we provide precise description, illustrations, photographs and taxonomic key to related genera and species.

A report of the second chloroplast genome sequence in Veronica nakaiana (Plantaginaceae), an endemic species in Korea

  • Veronica nakaiana Ohwi (Plantaginaceae) is an endemic taxon on Ulleungdo Island, Korea. We report the second complete chloroplast genome sequence of V. nakaiana. Its genome size is 152,319 bp in length, comprising a large single-copy of 83,195 bp, a small single-copy of 17,702 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions of 25,711 bp. The complete genome contains 115 genes, including 51 protein-coding genes, four rRNA genes, and 31 tRNA genes. When comparing the two chloroplast genomes of V. nakaiana, 11 variable sites are recognized: seven SNPs and four indels. Two substitutions in the coding regions are recognized: rpoC2 (synonymous substitution) and rpl22 (nonsynonymous substitution). In nine noncoding regions, one is in the tRNA gene (trnK-UUU), one is in the intron of atpF, and seven are in the intergenic spacers (trnH-GUG~psbA, trnK-UUU, rps16~trnQ-UUG, trnC-GCA~petN, psbZ~trnG-GCC, ycf3~trnS-GGA, ycf4~cemA, and psbB~psbT). The data provide the level of genetic variation in V. nakaiana. This result will be a useful resource to formulate conservation strategies for V. nakaiana, which is a rare endemic species in Korea.

Two newly naturalized plants in Korea: Nuttallanthus canadensis (L.) D. A. Sutton and Lamium purpureum var. hybridum (Vill.) Vill. (한국 미기록 귀화식물: 솔잎해란초와 유럽광대나물)

  • Two naturalized plants belonging to Plantaginaceae and Labiatae are newly recorded for Korean flora. Nuttallanthus canadensis (L.) D. A. Sutton, a taxon of the unrecorded genus Nuttallanthus (Plantaginaceae), was founded in Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do. This species can be distinguished from the Linaria species by its corolla with a pale blue to a pale purple color, a lower lip longer than the upper lip and seed with 4-7 angles when cross-sectioned. Lamium purpureum var. hybridum (Vill.) Vill. was found in Gwangju Metropolitan city, Jeongeup-si, Jeollabuk-do and Gochang-gun, Jeollanam-do. It can be distinguished from L. purpureum L. by its irregularly dentate bracts and upper lips 3-4 mm in length. New Korean names were given, as Sol-lip-hae-rancho to Nuttallanthus canadensis (L.) D. A. Sutton and Eu-reop-gwang-dae-na-mul to Lamium purpureum var. hybridum (Vill.) Vill. In addition, their descriptions, photos, illustrations and keys to related genera and species are provided here.

  • ${\beta}-Sitosteryl-3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ was isolated from the seeds of Plantago asiatica (Plantaginaceae). The assignments of $^{13}C$ NMR spectra of ${\beta}-sitosterol$ and ${\beta}-sitosteryl-3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ were made by comparing with $^{13}C$ NMR spectra of cholesterol and $cholesteryl-3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$. Our data indicate that the revision of previous $^{13}C$ NMR spectral assignment is needed.

  • Water fractions prepared from Plantaginis Semen and Plantaginis Folium exhibited both significant liver-protective activities against $CCl_4$ intoxication. Aucubin, an iridoid glycoside. isolated from both leaves and seeds of Plantago asiatica(Plantaginaceae) also showed potent liver protective activities against the animal model of hepatitis induced by $CCl_4$ intoxication.

Ecophysiological characteristcs of Plant Taxon-Specific Calcium Metabolism (식물 분류단위 특이적인 칼슘대사의 생리생태학적 특성)

  • In order to compare species-specific calcium metabolism, we collected 127 species belonging to 40 different families grown on various habitats including saline, limestone, wetland during the 1996 vegetation period, and analyzed their inorganic ion contents. Plants investigated were divided into 5 groups according to their physiological properties: 1) Chenopodiaceae, Aizoaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Portulacaceae and Phytolaccaceae of Centrospermales and Polygonaceae (Polygonales had a little water-soluble $Ca^{2+}$ but contained high contents of insoluble $Ca^{2+}$ particularly as Ca-oxalate (Chenopodiaceae type), 2) Some plant species such as Rosaceae produced oxalate in amounts insufficient to precipitate all incoming $Ca^{2+}$ and thus contained a surplus of dissolved $Ca^{2+}$ (Rosaceae type), 3) The contents of water-soluble $Ca^{2+}$ in plant species of Crassulaceae. Plantaginaceae, Asclepiadaceae, and Zygophyllaceae were equal to or greater than those of K ($K/Ca{\leq}1$; Crassulaceae type), and 4) K/Ca ratios of Compositae were significantly fluctuated depending on species and soil $Ca^{2+}$ level of their habitats (Compositae type). 5) Certain monocots (Gramineae, Cyperaceae, Juncaceae), in contrast to the dicotyledonous plant families mentioned above, showed a very distinct type of calcium metabolism, that is, the K/Ca ratios of 8~10 were maintained indifferently in the species and their habitat types (Graminae type). These results plants within the same taxon have similar physiological aspects as weel as morphological attributes. To understand calcium metabolism of certain plant species, therefore, it is desirable to approach on the basis of physiological concept (calciotroph or calciophobe) rather than the ecological one (calcicole or calcifuge).

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure in East Asian Populations of Plantago asiatica (동아시아 질경이 집단의 유전적 다양성과 집단구조)

  • Plantago asiatica (Plantaginaceae) is a wind-pollinated plant that grows mainly on fields in East Asia. Starch gel electrophoresis was used to investigate the allozyme diversity and population structure of 18 populations of this species. Although the plantain populations were isolated and patchily distributed, they maintained a high level of genetic diversity; the average percentage of polymorphic loci was 57.1%, the mean number of alleles per locus was 2.07, and the average heterozygosity for 18 populations was 0.201. The combination of a predominant wind-pollinated, mix-mating reproduction, large population sizes, high gene flow between subpopulations, and a propensity for high fecundity may explain the high level of genetic diversity within populations. A direct gradient in overall genetic diversity is associated with latitude. Genetic diversity of P. asiatica is markedly decreased from $35^{\circ}3^{\prime}$ to high latitude and decreased from $35^{\circ}3^{\prime}N$ to low latitude, whereas there does not show a longitudinal gradient in genetic diversity.
