  • Unlike a typical small-sized robot navigating in a free space, an autonomous vehicle has to travel in a designated road which has lanes to follow and traffic rules to obey. High-Definition (HD) maps, which include road markings, traffic signs, and traffic lights with high location accuracy, can help an autonomous vehicle avoid the need to detect such challenging road surroundings. With space constraints and a pre-built HD map, a new type of path planning algorithm can be conceived as a substitute for conventional grid-based path planning algorithms, which require substantial planning time to cover large-scale free space. In this paper, we propose an obstacle-avoiding, cost-based planning algorithm in a continuous space that aims to pursue a globally-planned path with the help of HD map information. Experimentally, the proposed algorithm is shown to outperform other state-of-the-art path planning algorithms in terms of computation complexity in a typical urban road setting, thereby achieving real-time performance and safe avoidance of obstacles.

  • With the hubbing strategy, construction of "Incheon Airport Railroad(AREX)" was proceeded to expand the accessibility at the level of airports in rivalry like Kansai and Chek Lap Kok. At the present 1st phase which routes from Incheon Airport to Kimpo Airport is opened March 2007. 2nd phase which is planned from Kimpo Airport to Seoul station will be opened at the end of October 2010. But the accessibilty to AREX is delinquent because it is connected only in Seoul station and the maximum operation speed is 110km/h which downgrade the time competitiveness with airport limousine. In addition, transfering of user is necessary to access to AREX from Kyungbu KTX. With these reasons, travel demand in 1st phase section is low(7%). According to reestimation of travel demand, demand analysis result compared with convention condition is insufficient, so required annual average government grant-in-aid amounts to 200 billions won, and it is right time to develop the method for revitalization of Incheon airport railroad. In this paper, facilities plan and operating plan to make new travel demand by speed-up which is able through substitution train now running with high speed train(EMU, 180km/h) and direct connection of KTX, will be suggested. This will contribute to offering high speed railroad service to customers and the reduction of government grant-in-aid by way of demand expansion.

  • During excavation work for the construction of a highway bridge in a limestone area in Korea, several cavities were found, and construction work was stopped temporarily. Cavities under the bridge piers might seriously threaten the safety of the planned bridge, because they could lead to excessive subsidence and differential settlement of the pier foundations. In order to establish a method for reinforcement of the pier foundations, borehole radar reflection and tomography surveys were carried out, to locate cavities under the planned pier locations and to determine their sizes where they exist. Since travel time data from the crosshole radar survey showed anisotropy, we applied an anisotropic tomography inversion algorithm assuming heterogeneous elliptic anisotropy, in order to reconstruct three kinds of tomograms: tomograms of maximum and minimum velocities, and of the direction of the symmetry axis. The distribution of maximum velocity matched core logging results better than that of the minimum velocity. The degree of anisotropy, defined by the normalized difference between maximum and minimum velocities, was helpful in deciding whether an anomalous zone in a tomogram was a cavity or not. By careful examination of borehole radar reflection and tomography images, the spatial distributions of cavities were delineated, and most of them were interpreted as being filled with clay and/or water. All the interpretation results implied that two faults imaged clearly by a DC resistivity survey were among the most important factors controlling the groundwater movement in the survey area, and therefore were closely related to the development of cavities. The method of reinforcement of the pier foundations was based on the interpretation results, and the results were confirmed when construction work was resumed.

  • The objective of VMS(Variable Message Sign) is to provide the traffic information downstream to drivers upstream so that they can choose their routes or expect the travel time to arrive the destination. Because there is not enough time and space to show the message, VMS message should be selected carefully. However, the message of VMS has been simply selected among the pre-designed message sets based on the priority rule of events. If the traffic demand between origin and destination is identified along the freeway, message can be selected to provide the information of a route that more drivers will use. In this study, a time sliced OD(Origin/Destination) estimation method will be developed using the detector information of the on-ramp, exit ramp, and the main lanes. And the strategy of a priority rule of message was planned.

  • In accordance with low carbon and green growth paradigm, a subway is one of major public transit systems for resolving traffic congestion and decreasing traffic accidents. In addition, as subway networks expand, passengers' travel pattern in the subway network change and consequently affect the urban structure. Generally, new subway route has been planned and developed, mainly considering a travel demand forecast. However, it is desired to conduct an empirical analysis on the forecast model regarding change of travel accessibility and passenger demand pattern according to new subway line. Therefore, in this paper, an alternative method, developed based upon a spatial syntax model, is proposed for evaluating new subway route in terms of passenger's mobility and network accessibility. In a case study, we constructed subway network data, mainly targeting the no 9 subway line opened in 2009. With an axial-map analysis, we calculated spatial characteristics to describe topological movement interface. We then analyzed actual modal shift and change on demand of passengers through the number of subway passenger between subway stations and the number of passenger according to comparative bus line from Smart Card to validate suggested methods. Results show that the proposed method provides quantitative means of visualizing passenger flow in subway route planning and of analyzing the time-space characteristics of network. Also, it is expected that the proposed method can be utilized for predicting a passengers' pattern and its impact on public transportation.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate traffic management strategies using Variable Message Signs(MCS) on urban freeways. It is well known that real-time information on traffic conditions increases driver's comfort, and reduces the risks of accidents if drivers are aware of the traffic situation in advance, they decide whether to divert from the freeway or continue on the planned route. The experimental data collected on the Olympic highway we have shown the following results : 1. when the information on both the congested freeway and uncontested diversion route is displayed on the variable message sign. an additional 1.7 percent of traffic diverted, which results in a 3.7 percent reduction in total travel time. 2 Compared with one Proposed VMS message of 'reduce the speed', the other Proposed VMS message of 'keep speed 70km/h' is found to be much more effective in reducing mean speed.

  • This study is an attempt to trace the origins of Korean botanical gardens prior to the construction of the botanical garden in Changgyeonggung Palace. We trace the time period during which Korean intellectuals first understood and appropriated botanical gardens based on accounts found in travel journals. These were written by members of delegations sent to Japan, Russia, and Great Britain and by students who had studied abroad, such as Tchi-Ho Yun and Kil-Chun Yu, during the open port period from 1876 to 1910. This study shows that the term "botanical garden" did not appear in any of the travel journals and the delegations did not show much interest in them until the 1880s. Japan had planned to introduce the different types of botanical gardens to the delegations from the Joseon Dynasty, but the delegations left no official records or related accounts regarding their visits. In contrast, members of delegations who were sent to Russia, Europe, and America after the 1890s began to pay attention to botanical gardens. They considered botanical gardens as a representative and essential part of Western culture and attempted to introduce them in Korea as essential tools for academic development as well as for enlightenment. Although many Korean intellectuals' opinions about the necessity of a botanical garden did not actually lead to its construction during the open port period, such a movement was significant in that it strengthened the botanical garden's image as a symbol of civilization. Apart from tracing the origins of the botanical gardens in Korea, this study serves as fundamental research material for understanding the establishment of the Changgyeongwon Botanical Garden in 1909.

  • Unnecessary transportation of resources are one of the major causes that adversely affect construction site work productivity. Therefore, layout related studies have been conducted with efforts to develop management technologies and techniques to minimize the resource transportation made at site-level. However, although the necessity for floor-level layout planning studies has been increasing as buildings have become larger and floors have become more complicated, studies to optimize the transportation of materials inside buildings are currently not being actively conducted. Therefore, in this study, a model was developed using genetic algorithms(GA) that will enable the optimization of the locations of finishing materials on the work-floor. With the established model, the arrangement of diverse materials on complicated floors can be planned and the optimized material layout planning derived from the model can minimize the total material transportation time spent by laborers during their working day. In addition, to calculate travel distances between work sites and materials realistically, the concept of actual travel distances was applied. To identify the applicability of the developed model and compare it with existing methodologies and analyze it, the model was applied to actual high-rise residential complexes.

  • The purpose of this study was to propose the most cost-effective sampling method, by analyzing the cost of forest resource investigation per sampling method for the planned harvesting area of in Chunyang-myeon, Byeonghwa-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. For this study, three sampling methods were selected: random sampling method, systematic sampling method, and line transect method. For each method, sample size, hourly wage, number of sample points, survey time, travel time, the sample error rate of the estimated average volume, and the desired sampling error rate were used to calculate the cost of forest resource inventories. Thus, 10 sampling points were extracted for each sampling method, and the factors required for cost analysis were calculated via a field survey. As a result, the field survey cost per ha using the random sampling method was found to be have the lowest cost, regardless of the desired sampling error rate, followed by the systematic sampling method, and the line transect method.

  • A total of 19 elevators for evacuation were installed in the Lotte World Tower and it is planned to operate the shuttle using the manual key from five refuge floors to the 1st floor in an emergency. In the event of a fire or other disaster, it is necessary to conduct intensive analysis to determine how much RSET reduction could be achieved using the evacuation elevator compared to the existing evacuation plans. When the optimal transportation sharing ratio by the evacuation elevators was 40% at the Lotte World Tower, the RSET of the evacuation scenario in parallel with the elevators in the entire building was calculated to be 1 hour and 2 minutes. The RSET of a conventional evacuation scenario (Walking along the stairs without using the elevators) was calculated to be 1 hour 29 minutes, therefore, the former evacuation scenario were found to have a shortening effect of approximately 27 minutes compared to the latter. On the other hand, to maintain this effect, each part of the evacuation route using the elevator must have the capability to protect the evacuee from any hazards caused by fires, such as smoke, flame, and radiant heat during the evacuation. Moreover, the evacuation route should be continuous from the residence position of the elevator user to the final evacuation site, and be recognized easily.
