  • A conventional elastic material replacement and performance evaluation are very complicated and time-consuming, and it is difficult to know when to replace the elastic material in advance. By comparing with the product limit and the functional limit, the necessity of elastic material replacement and the improvement of track support stiffness according to replacement can be immediately demonstrated based on experimental data. Using an evaluation system of track support stiffness, the performance evaluation data for elastic materials obtained through field tests using software for track support stiffness is integrated and managed on the administrator's computer. Therefore, the replacement plan is established and maintenance history is managed by identifying the replacement time and location of elastic materials. It is possible to evaluate the performance and condition of the elastic material at the various points during the working time of the track inspection and the track performance (track support stiffness) and durability of the elastic material (aging level, spring stiffness variation rate, etc.) at the operation condition. The elastic material could be replaced timely, and the deterioration of the elastic material can be continuously monitored.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope an assessment method for parking lot remodeling alternative by adopting the asset management technique. In order to identify the Level of Service(LOS) and the Evaluation Measurement(EM), literatures was implemented which documented the consideration of parking lot plan, needs of the apartments' tenant, and various design standards. In addition, the authors conducted a three-time delphi survey for the identified 5 LOS and 19 EM to evaluate suitability and necessity of them and to collect additional opinion of experts. The LOS of parking lot were categorized into 5 areas such as Environmental effect and Convenience, Accessibility and so on. The 19 EM were determined to estimate the LOS quantitatively. The researchers analyzed the degree of importance of LOS and EM by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. But construction cost was excepted from the analysis, because it is used as an independent variable in alternative assessment. In conclusion, the authors proposed the estimation criteria for EM, and the method and process for alternative assessment be performed to benefit-cost analysis using the LOS variation and construction cost. The assessment method for parking lot remodeling alternative was demonstrated effective to assess the parking lot remodeling alternative by case-study. This study has a academic significance by adopting the asset management techniques in the area of the parking lot remodeling. And the assessment method is expected to help deciding a reasonable remodeling alternative of parking lot, as it ensures the diversity for remodeling of the parking lot and reflects the needs of the occupant.

  • Dynamic conformal arc therapy (DCAT) and flattening-filter-free (FFF) beams are commonly adopted for efficient conformal dose delivery in stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). Off-axis geometry (OAG) may be necessary to obtain full gantry rotation without collision, which has been shown to be beneficial for peripheral targets using flattened beams. In this study dose distributions in OAG using FFF were evaluated and the effect of mechanical rotation induced uncertainty was investigated. For the lateral target, OAG evaluation, sphere targets (2, 4, and 6 cm diameter) were placed at three locations (central axis, 3 cm off-axis, and 6 cm off-axis) in a representative patient CT set. For each target, DCAT plans under the same objective were obtained for 6X, 6FFF, 10X, and 10FFF. The parameters used to evaluate the quality of the plans were homogeneity index (HI), conformality indices (CI), and beam on time (BOT). Next, the mechanical rotation induced uncertainty was evaluated using five SBRT patient plans that were randomly selected from a group of patients with laterally located tumors. For each of the five cases, a plan was generated using OAG and CAG with the same prescription and coverage. Each was replanned to account for one degree collimator/couch rotation errors during delivery. Prescription isodose coverage, CI, and lung dose were evaluated. HI and CI values for the lateral target, OAG evaluation were similar for flattened and unflattened beams; however, 6FFF provided slightly better values than 10FFF in OAG. For all plans the HI and CI were acceptable with the maximum difference between flattened and unflattend beams being 0.1. FFF beams showed better conformality than flattened beams for low doses and small targets. Variation due to rotational error for isodose coverage, CI, and lung dose was generally smaller for CAG compared to OAG, with some of these comparisons reaching statistical significance. However, the variations in dose distributions for either treatment technique were small and may not be clinically significant. FFF beams showed acceptable dose distributions in OAG. Although 10FFF provides more dramatic BOT reduction, it generally provides less favorable dosimetric indices compared to 6FFF in OAG. Mechanical uncertainty in collimator and couch rotation had an increased effect for OAG compared to CAG; however, the variations in dose distributions for either treatment technique were minimal.

  • The main payload of Science and Technology Satellite 3 (STSAT-3), Multipurpose InfraRed Imaging System (MIRIS) is the first Korean infrared space mission to explore the near-infrared sky with a small astronomical instrument developed by KASI. The 8-cm passively cooled telescope with a wide field of view (3.67 deg. ${\times}$ 3.67 deg.) will be operated in the wavelength range from 0.9 to $2{\mu}m$. It will carry out wide-band imaging and the Paschen-${\alpha}$ emission line survey. After the calibration of MIRIS in our laboratory, MIRIS has been delivered to SaTReC and successfully assembled into the STSAT-3. The main purposes of MIRIS are to perform the observation of Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) at two wide spectral bands (I and H band) and to survey the Galactic plane at $1.88{\mu}m$ wavelength, the Paschen-${\alpha}$ emission line. CIB observation enables us to reveal the nature of degree-scale CIB fluctuation detected by the IRTS (Infrared Telescope in Space) mission and to measure the absolute CIB level. The MIRIS will continuously monitor the seasonal variation of the zodiacal light towards the both north and south ecliptic poles for the purpose of calibration as well as the effective removal of zodiacal light. The Pashen-${\alpha}$ emission line survey of Galactic plane helps us to understand the origin of Warm Ionized Medium (WIM) and to find the physical properties of interstellar turbulence related to star formation. Here, we also discuss the observation plan with MIRIS.

  • This study found potential ability to generate electric power using difference in water temperature between sea surface water and deep water in the East Sea which includes the East Sea Proper Water with the temperature less than 1$^{\circ}C$ throughout a year without seasonal variation. To quantify the difference in water temperature between sea surface water and deep water in the East Sea. We computed the annual mean ($^{\circ}C$), the annual amplitude ($^{\circ}C$), the annual phase (degree) and the duration time which showed more than 15$^{\circ}C$ temperature difference from the water temperature data using Harmonic analysis during 1961~1997. The best place for generating electric power in the East Sea seems to be the eastward ocean areas (36$^{\circ}$ 05'N, 129$^{\circ}$ 48'E~36$^{\circ}$ 05'N, 130$^{\circ}$ 00E'E) from Pohang city. The annual mean of the difference in water temperature between sea surface water and 500 m depth was 24$^{\circ}$C at the place to generate electric power in August according to the data of 1961~1997. the maximum duration periods with more than 15$^{\circ}C$ temperature difference were 215 days (5/5-12/10) a year in the place mentioned electricity with a stable plan. In the East Sea coastal areas of the Korean peninsula, the average minimum depth to reach the East Sea Proper Water from surface water is 300 m and fluctuates between 250 m and 350 m throughout a year. Further studies could be needed for the utilization of cold water, such as the East Sea Proper Water for energy conversion.

  • This study examined how to determine the optimal sediment level in dam reservoir for efficient plan and operation of dam. Currently, Korea is applying a horizontally accumulated method for sediment level estimation for the safety design of dam and so the method estimated relatively higher level than others. However, the sediment level of dam reservoir should be accurately estimated because it is an important factor in assessing life cycle of a dam. The sediment level in dam reservoir can be determined by SED-2D model linked with RMA-2, horizontally accumulated method, area increment method, and empirical area reduction method. The estimated sediment level from each method was compared with the observed sediment level measured in 2007 in Imha dam reservoir, Korea and then the optimal method was determined. Also, the future sediment level was predicted by each method for the future trend analysis of sediment level. As the results, the most accurate sediment level was estimated by the empirical area reduction method and the future trend of sediment level variation followed the past trend. Therefore, we have found that the empirical area reduction method is a proper one for more accurate estimation of sediment level and it can be validated by the results from a numerical model of SED-2D linked with RMA-2 model.

  • There was intraspecific variation in Echinochloa crus-galli var, crus-galli in response to quinclorac, showing that plan height and dry weight of a locally collected barnyardgrass(Chinjupi) from Chinju were 90.5 and 37.8% of the untreated control, while those of a locally collected one(Iripi) from Iri showed 19.1 and 14.4%, respectively. The normal distribution curve was obtained from frequency distribution of 89 rice cultivars as affected by the application rates of quinclorac at 30, 300, and 3,000g ai/ha. Protein patterns(SDS-PAGE) of two barnyardgrasses belonging to E, crus-galli var. crus-galli such as Iripi and Chinjupi were not affected by the quinclorac application, indicating that inhibition of enzyme and/or protein biosynthesis seems to be not the primary action target of quinclorac. Electronmicroscopic observation on the injured leaf of Iripi which is considered as a susceptible one showed prominent membrane disruption. Chuchungbyeo(rice variety) resulted in a greater inhibition of tomato growth than those from Chinjupi or Iripi, indicating a great amount of quinclorac discharged from rice root, Chinjupi which is relatively tolerant to quinclorac than Iripi, discharged more quinclorac causing a greater inhibition of tomato growth.

  • About 300,000 tones of oyster shell are annually produced in Korea and, thus, a massive recycling plan is required. Many desulfurizing studies using oyster shells with chemical composition of $CaCO_3$ have been performed so far; however, most of them have focused on dry desulfurization. This study investigates the possibility of using oyster shells for wet desulfurization after calcination. For this, a simulated wet desulfurization facility of spray type was devised and compared the SOx-stripping characteristics of calcined oyster shell with those of limestone. The calcined oyster shell slurry indicate a better desulfurizability than the slurries of raw shell or limestone because the oyster shell transformed to a more reactive phase ($Ca(OH)_2$) by the calcination and hydration. Because of this reason, when the calcined oyster shell slurries were used, the reaction residue showed the higher gypsum ($CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$) contents than any other cases. In the continuous desulfurization experiments, calcined oyster shell slurry showed a wider pH variation than limestone or raw oyster shell slurries, another clear indication of high reactivity of calcined oyster shells for $SO_2$ absorption. Our study also shows that the efficiency of wet desulfurization can be improved by the use of calcined oyster shells.

  • Items of road tunnel PISD (Precise Inspection for Safety and Diagnosis) were reviewed and analyzed using newly enhanced MMS (Mobile Mapping System) technology. Possible items with MMS can be visual inspection, survey and non-destructive test, structural analysis, and maintenance plan. The resolution of 3D point cloud decreased when the vehicle speed of MMS is too fast while the calibration error increased when it is too slow. The speed measurement of 50 km/h is determined to be effective in this study. Although image resolution by MMS has a limit to evaluating the width of crack with high precision, it can be used as data to identify the status of facilities in the tunnel and determine whether they meet disaster prevention management code of tunnel. 3D point cloud with MMS can be applicable for matching of cross-section and also possible for the variation of longitudinal survey, which can intuitively check vehicle clearance throughout the road tunnel. Compared with the measurement of current PISD, number of test and location of survey is randomly sampled, the continuous measurement with MMS for environment condition can be effective and meaningful for precise estimation in various analysis.

  • The coastal dune ecosystem is one of the ecosystems under the most development pressure in Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to study the ecological location and related ecological phenomena of coastal dune plants, but related studies are lacking. Through this study, we intend to conduct research on the structure and restoration of dune plants, focusing on the coastal dunes in Jeju Island, which are affected by artificial development pressure and the continuous increase in tourists among many coastal dunes in Korea. Ecosystems of coastal sand dunes for vegetation survey in Jeju Island are selected based on naturalness and preservation. In this study, 23 major coastal dunes on Jeju Island including Udo were selected. In the coastal dunes of Jeju Island, a whole species survey and quadrat survey were carried out. The vegetation survey at study sites were conducted on May to September 2022, when the vegetation is clearly visible. At the survey site, the dune area was identified at the beginning and the plant species were recorded until no more new species appeared. Vegetation survey in the field was performed by 103 quadrat establishments and was conducted using Braun-Blanquet method. A total of 277 species appeared, and the most common species were Vitex rotundifolia and Calystegia soldanella. The frequency of both Vitex rotundifolia and Calystegia soldanella was approximately over 90%. The proportion of woody and herbaceous in all emerging species was 7.2% and 92.8%, respectively. The total number of species found in the quadrat survey was 98. As a result of classifying plant communities based on species dominance in the quadrats, it was analyzed into 30 plant communities. The plant communities that appeared with a frequency of 2 or more on the main island of Jeju were Vitex rotundifolia, Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii, Ischaemum antephoroides, Wedelia prostrata, Elymus mollis, Calystegia soldanella, Artemisia scoparia, and Tetragonia tetragonoides. The DCCA(detrended canonical correspondence analysis) based on the vegetation and environment factor matrix showed that the height and covers of the dominant plant species explain significantly the variation and distribution of coastal sand dune species on Jeju island. Thus, we may propose a plan to restore the coastal dunes of Jeju island as helping colonization and establishment of mainly sand dune native perennials and trees, preserving native plant communities that are declining and preserving present tree strips of Pinus thunbergii, Litsea japonica, Pittosporum tobira and Vitex rotundifolia.
