  • The number of pixel defects including bright and black dots on a panel is one of the critical factors determining the quality of TFT-LCD. Since pixel defects on the TFT-LCD panels are sometimes unavoidable, manufacturers have to inspect the panels so that any panel with an unacceptable number of defects will not be delivered to the buyers. However, the buyers demand for the manufacturers to meet different pixel defects tolerances (acceptable number of pixel defects on a TFT-LCD panel) around central(tight) and peripheral(loose) inspection zones. The disagreement in quality standard among different buyers also cause confusions in screening non-confirmative products and unstable yield of production. Few research has focused on the effects of defect locations on a TFT-LCD panel on their detection probabilities and the rational division of defect inspection zones. In this research, experiments were conducted to find the detection probabilities of black dot defects with respect to their varying locations on a TFT-LCD. It is proposed a rational division of inspection zone on a TFT-LCD panel on the basis of detection probabilities of the defects. With these division of inspection zones and the mean defect detection probability within each zone, it is expected to establish a more reasonable pixel defects tolerances.

  • A novel data hiding technique based on modified histogram shifting that incorporates multi-bit secret data hiding is proposed. The proposed technique divides the image pixel values into embeddable and nonembeddable pixel values. Embeddable pixel values are those that are within a specified limit interval surrounding the peak value of an image. The limit interval is calculated from the number of secret bits to be embedded into each embeddable pixel value. The embedded secret bits can be perfectly extracted from the stego image at the receiver side without any overhead bits. From the simulation, it is found that the proposed technique produces a better quality stego image compared to other data hiding techniques, for the same embedding rate. Since the proposed technique only embeds the secret bits in a limited number of pixel values, the change in the visual quality of the stego image is negligible when compared to other data hiding techniques.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the optimal algorithm to extract medical radiation induced pixel signal from complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors of smartphones camera. The pixel intensity and pixel number of smartphone camera were measured as the X-ray dose was increased. The front camera of the smartphone camera has low noise property and excellent dose response as compared to the back camera of the smartphone. The indirect method which uses scintillation crystal in front of the smartphone camera, couldn't improve the X-ray detection efficiency as compared to the direct method which does not use any scintillator in front of the smartphone camera. When we used the algorithm which employing threshold level on the pixel intensity and pixel number, the dose linearity was more higher for the pixel intensity rather for the pixel number. The use of pixel intensity of Y color component which represents the grey scale, would be efficient in terms of the radiation detection efficiency and reducing the complexity of the image processing. We expect that the radiation dose monitoring can be managed effectively and systematically by using the proposed radiation detection algorithm, thus eventually will contribute to the public healthcare.

  • In this paper, we calculated the pixel and all the inter-electrode capacitances in a unit pixel of three kinds of TFT-LCD modes in order to realize the full color image. And we analyzed the effect on applied voltage. We fixed size of sub-pixel and designed a unit pixel of three kinds of TFT-LCD modes. We calculated rigorously the pixel and all the inter-electrode capacitances by the three dimensional simulation. And we expanded one pixel into whole panel using H-SPICE. As a result, we calculated the RMS voltage and kickback voltage which most affect gray scale of the pixel and calculated the number of bit according to permissible range of minimum gray scale using V-T curve.

  • Recently, a pixel-chaotic-shuffling (PCS) method has been proposed by Huang et al. for encrypting color images using multiple chaotic systems like the Henon, the Lorenz, the Chua, and the Rossler systems. All of which have great encryption performance. The authors claimed that their pixel-chaotic-shuffle (PCS) encryption method has high confidential security. However, the security analysis of the PCS method against the chosen-plaintext attack (CPA) and known-plaintext attack (KPA) performed by Solak et al. successfully breaks the PCS encryption scheme without knowing the secret key. In this paper we present an improved shuffling pattern for the plaintext image bits to make the cryptosystem proposed by Huang et al. resistant to chosen-plaintext attack and known-plaintext attack. The modifications in the existing PCS encryption method are proposed to improve its security performance against the potential attacks described above. The Number of Pixel Change Rate (NPCR), Unified Average Changed Intensity (UACI), information entropy, and correlation coefficient analysis are performed to evaluate the statistical performance of the modified PCS method. The simulation analysis reveals that the modified PCS method has better statistical features and is more resistant to attacks than Huang et al.'s PCS method.

  • In this paper, a pixel value prediction algorithm using edge components in three directions is proposed. There are various directional edges and similarity between adjacent pixels in natural images. After detecting the edge components in the x-axis direction, the y-axis direction, and the diagonal axis direction, the pixel value is predicted by applying the detected edge components and similarity between neighboring pixels. In particular, the predicted pixel value is calculated according to the intensity of the edge component in the diagonal axis direction. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively predict pixel values. The proposed algorithm can be used for applications such as reversible data hiding, reversible watermarking to increase the number of embedded data.

  • Multi-level holographic data storage is a candidate for the next generation data storage system, since it can store more than one bit per pixel. It is possible to increase the number of codewords if the number of levels is increased, and the code with an appropriate selection of codewords can also increase the minimum distance. In this paper, we propose three multi-level modulation codes of the code rate 1 bit/pixel and compare the performance according to the minimum distance. The result shows that the code with small number of levels is better than that of large number of levels because it is hard to detect threshold value.

  • Motion estimation (ME) algorithms supporting quarter-pixel accuracy have been recently introduced to retain detailed motion information for high quality of video in the state-of-the-art video compression standard of H.264/AVC. Conventional sub-pixel ME algorithms in the spatial domain are faced with a common problem of computational complexity because of embedded interpolation schemes. This paper proposes a low-complexity sub-pixel motion estimation algorithm in the transform domain utilizing shifting matrix. Simulations are performed to compare the performances of spatial-domain ME algorithms and transform-domain ME algorithms in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and the number of bits per frame. Simulation results confirm that the transform-domain approach not only improves the video quality and the compression efficiency, but also remarkably alleviates the computational complexity, compared to the spatial-domain approach.

  • Typical low-level image processing tasks require thousands of operations per pixel for each input image. Traditional general-purpose computers are not capable of performing such tasks in real time. Yet important features of traditional computers are not exploited by low-level image processing tasks. Since storage requirements are limited to a small number of low-precision integer values per pixel, large hierarchical memory systems are not necessary. The mismatch between the demands of low-level image processing tasks and the characteristics of conventional computers motivates investigation of alternative architectures. The structure of the tasks suggests employing an array of processing elements, one per pixel, sharing instructions issued by a single controller. In this paper we implemented various image processing filtering using the format converter. Also, we realized from conventional gray image process to color image process. This design method is based on realized the large processor-per-pixel array by integrated circuit technology This format converter design has control path implementation efficiently, and can be utilize the high technology without complicated controller hardware.

  • While recent display devices are becoming light and slim, the size of a screen is especially the important issue in the field of display devices. Furthermore, it is also required that the projection TV, a large screen display device, be able to represent higher resolutions as the digital broadcasting is set off. In order to realize high resolutions in a DLP projection TV, the number of pixel on DMD should be increased. However, a large number of pixels make it difficult to realize resulting small sized pixels and this cause the increase in cost. Therefore, we propose a simple and improved pixel enhancement actuator using the existing DMD by offsetting half pixels repeatedly in the vertical direction.
