By using Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys, porcelain fused to metal (PFM) samples were prepared to examine the interface and the surface corrosion behavior. The potentiodynamic polarization analysis showed that the corrosion current density of Co-Cr alloy ($1.61{\times}10^{-6}A/cm^2$) was three times lower than that of Ni-Cr alloy ($4.83{\times}10^{-6}A/cm^2$) at room temperature. A dental prosthesis consisting of the porcelain fused to Ni-Cr alloy extracted from a patient after approximately four years of usage was examined to assess its resistance to corrosion. OM and SEM images of the metal part revealed a typical pitting corrosion. As compared to porcelain fused to Ni-Cr alloy having a thick layer (${\sim}10{\mu}m$) of oxide at the interface, a relatively thin oxide layer (less than $5{\mu}m$) was formed on Co-Cr alloy, indicating that the interface between Co-Cr alloy and porcelain may have a better adhesion strength than the interface between Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain.
The use of biogas is an industrially necessary means to achieve resource circulation. However, since biogas obtained from waste frequently causes corrosion in pipes, it is important to elucidate corrosion mechanisms of the pipes used for biogas transportation. Recently, corrosion failure occurred in a pipe which supplied for the biogas at the speed of 12.5 m/s. Pinholes and pits were found in a straight line along the seamline of the pipe. By using corrosion-damaged samples, residual thickness, microstructure, and composition of oxide film and inclusion were examined to analyze the cause of the failure. It was revealed that the thickness reduction of biogas pipe was ~0.11 mm per year. A thin sulfuric acid film was formed on the surface of the interior of a pipe due to moisture and hydrogen sulfide contained in a biogas. Near the seamline, microstructure was heterogeneous and manganese sulfide (MnS) was found. Pits were generated by micro-galvanic corrosion between the manganese sulfide and the matrix in the interior of the pipe along the seamline. In addition, microcracks formed along the grain boundaries beneath the pits revealed that hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) also contributed to accelerating the pitting corrosion.
By operation in aqueous environment at high temperature and pressure, the structural materials from Primary Heat Transport System (PHTS) cover with protective oxide films, which maintain the corrosion rate in admissible limits. A lot of potential factors exist, which conduct to degradation of the protective films and consequently to intensification of the corrosion processes. The existing experience of different nuclear reactors shows that the water chemistry has an important role in integrity maintaining of the protective oxide films. To investigate the influence of water chemistry (pH, O2 dissolved, $Cl^-$, $F^-$) on corrosion of some structural materials (carbon and martensitic steel, Zr and Ni alloys) and to establish the maximum permissible values, corrosion experiments by static autoclaving and electrochemical methods were performed. The experimental results allowed us to establish the contribution of the water chemistry in initiation and evolution of some accelerated corrosion processes.
Austenitic stainless steel was investigated under cyclic loading in electrolytes with different chloride contents and pH and at different temperatures. The testing solutions were 13.2 % NaCl (80,000 ppm $Cl^-$) at $80^{\circ}C$and 43 % $CaCl_2$ (275,000 ppm $Cl^-$) at $120^{\circ}C$. In addition to S-N curves in inert and corrosive media, the fracture surfaces were investigated with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to analyse the type of attack. The experimental results showed that a sharp decrease in corrosion fatigue properties can be correlated with the occurrence of stress corrosion cracking. The correlation of occurring types of damage in different corrosion systems is described.
The fundamental experiments on the phosphorus removal from water were carried out by the batch and continuous reactors which used aluminium and copper plate. In this systems, the phosphorus was removed by aluminium ion generated with the electrochemical interaction (pitting corrosion) of aluminium and copper. In the batch experiments, the efficiencies of phosphorus removal increased when the surfaces of aluminium and copper plate were brushed. The phosphorus removal by aluminium ion was affected the copper plate and NaCI in this system. The optimal pH values were 5 and 6 for the phosphorus removal. The efficiency of phosphorus removal increased with increasing NaCI concentration, surface area of aluminium and copper plate. The $CUSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$ instead of copper plate could be used as Cu source. The effluent $PO_4-P$ concentration as low as 2 $mg/{\ell}$ could have been obtained during the continuous experiment at HRT of 48 hrs.
The localized corrosion resistance of the Ni-based Inconel 718 alloy after solution heat treatment was evaluated using electrochemical techniques in a solution of 25 wt% NaCl and 0.5 wt% acetic acid. Solution heat treatment at 1050 ℃ for 2.5 hours resulted in an increased average grain diameter. Both Ti carbides (10 ㎛ diameter) and Nb-Mo carbides (1 - 9 ㎛ diameter) were distributed throughout the material. Despite heat treatment, the shape and composition of these carbides remained consistent. An increase in solution temperature led to a decrease in pitting potential value. However, the pitting potential value of solution heat-treated Inconel 718 was consistently higher than that of as-received Inconel 718 at all tested temperatures. Localized corrosion initiation occurred at 0.4 VSSE in a temperature environment of 80 ℃ for both as-received and solution heat-treated Inconel 718 alloys. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis indicated that the composition of the passive film formed on specimen surfaces remained largely unchanged after solution heat treatment, with O1s, Cr2p3/2, Fe2p3/2, and Ni2p3/2 present. The difference in localized corrosion resistance between as-received and solution heat-treated Inconel 718 alloys was attributable to microstructural changes induced by the heat treatment process.
ALDC 12 Al alloy is often corroded with some forms such as pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion, and galvanic corrosion etc., in case of severe corrosion environment like seawater Annealing heat treatment was performed to improve the corrosion resistance of ALDC 12. Hardness was decreased with increasing of annealing temperature, however its corrosion resistance was clearly improved with increasing of annealing temperature.
The compressive residual stress, which is inducing by shot peening process, has the effect of increasing the intrinsic fatigue strength of surface and therefore would be beneficial in reducing the probability of fatigue damage. However, it was not known that the effect of shot peening in corrosion environment. In this study, the influence of shot peening and corrosion condition for corrosion property were investigated on immersed in 3.5% NaCl, 10% HNO3 + 3% HF, 6% $FeCl_3$. The immersion test was performed with two kind of specimen. The immersion periods was performed 150days. Corrosion potential, weight loss were investigated from experimental results. From test results, the effect of shot peening on the corrosion characteristics was evaluated.
Silver is an inexpensive precious metal and is used in various jewelry in Asia. Although silver has high potential, it has corrosion resistance that is vulnerable to boiling sulfuric acid and nitric acid. So, silver research is needed to prevent the corrosion with environment. But silver corrosion is not studied. sulfuric acid make the uniform corrosion and chloride ion make the pitting corrosion. ICCP inhibits the corrosion because it offset electrons. This study used a potential from - 4 V to 4 V to check the effect of potential. Corrosion rate is lowet at -1 V.
