  • The influences of various parameters such as inclusions, surface roughness, exposed areas and chloride ion concentrations on the initiation of pitting of Fe-17Cr alloy were investigated, using micro-droplet cell technique. Micro-droplet cell allows one to align the micro-electrode to the desired spot of the working electrode and measure directly local currents with the potentiodynamic polarization. Micro electrochemical tests were carried out at the inclusions after EDX analysis of inclusion. EDX analysis identified inclusions as Cr-oxides. It was found that some active inclusions among Cr-oxide inclusions acted as initiation sites for pitting corrosion. In addition, the rougher surface and the denser chloride ion concentration offered easier pit initiation sites, causing the more susceptible to pitting corrosion.

  • The effect on the pitting corrosion resistance of laser welding and surface treatment developed as a repair method of stream generator tubing material that was a major component of primary system at nuclear power plant was observed. Some heat-treated Alloy 600 tubing materials used at domestic nuclear power plants were laser-surface observed. Some heat-treated Alloy 600 tubing materials used at domestic nuclear power plants were laser-surface melted and the microstructural characteristics were examined. The pitting corrosion resistance was examined through Ep(pitting potential) and degree of pit generation by means of the electrochemical tests and the immersion tests respectively. The pit formation characteristics were investigated through microstructural changes and the pit initiation site and pit morphology. The test results showed that the pitting corrosion resistances was increased in the order of the followings; sensitized Alloy 600, solution annealed alloy600, and laser surface melted Alloy 600. Pits were initiated preferably at Ti-containing inclusions and their surroundings in all tested specimens and it is believed that higher pitting resistance of laser-surface treated Alloy 600 was caused by fine, homogeneous distribution of non-soluble inclusions, the disappearance of grain boundary, and the formation of dense, stable oxide film. The major element of corrosion products filled in the pit was Cr. On the other hand, Fe was enriched in the deposit formed on the pit.

  • The pitting behaviours of 304L and 316L stainless steels were investigated at $3^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$ in 1 M solutions of NaCl, NaBr and NaI by potentiodynamic polarization. The temperature dependences of the pitting potential varied according to the anion, being near linear in bromide but exponential in chloride. As a result, at low temperatures grades 304L and 316L steel are most susceptible to pitting by bromide ions, while at high temperatures both stainless steels were more susceptible to pitting by small chloride anions than the larger bromide and iodide. Thus, increasing temperature appears to favour attack by smaller anions. This paper will attempt to rationalise both of the above findings in terms of the point defect model. Initial findings are that qualitatively this approach can be reasonably successful, but not at the quantitative level, possibly due to insufficient data on the mechanical properties of thin passive films.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of the residual carbides and tempered carbides precipitated by tempering treatment after quenching on the pitting corrosion of mod. 440A martensitic stainless steel. In quenched specimens and tempered specimens after quenching of mod. 440A martensitic stainless steel, the volume fraction of the residual carbides and total carbides decreased with the increase of the austenitizing temperature. Pitting resistance increased with the increase of austenitizing temperature. With the increase of the volume fraction of the residual and total carbides, the pitting resistance of mod. 440A martensitic stainless steel was decreased. The pitting resistance of mod. 0.5C-17Cr-0.5Ni 440A martensitic stainless steel had stronger affected by residual carbides than precipitated carbides produced by tempering.

  • Due to advancement of the industry, operation of a device in a harsh environment is increasing. Especially, the marine environment contains Cl- ions which causes localized corrosion such as pitting and crevice corrosion of stainless steel and various metals. In this study, electrochemical corrosion behaviors of austenitic stainless steel (STS 316L) and nickel alloy (Inconel 600) with different seawater concentrations (fresh water, seawater, mixed water) were investigated. The STS 316L and Inconel 600 were etched in 10% oxalic acid and composed of an austenitic phase. Results of Tafel analysis in seawater showed that STS 316L and Inconel 600 presented the highest corrosion current densities of 7.75 × 10-4 mA/cm2 and 1.11 × 10-4 mA/cm2 and the most negative pitting potentials of 0.94 V and 1.06 V, respectively. The maximum damage depths and surface damage ratio by pitting corrosion increased with chloride concentration. The STS 316L had higher PREN than Inconel 600. However, the surface damage and weight loss of Inconel 600 were superior to STS 316L. It was difficult to compare the pitting resistance of STS 316L based on Fe and Inconel 600 based on Ni with PREN simply.

  • The effects of alloyed carbon on the pitting corrosion, the general corrosion, and the passivity behavior of Fe18Cr10Mn0.4NxC (x=0~0.38 wt%) alloys were investigated by various electrochemical methods and XPS analysis. The alloyed carbon increased the general corrosion resistance of the FeCrMnN matrix. Carbon enhanced the corrosion potential, reduced the metal dissolution rate, and accelerated the hydrogen evolution reaction rate in various acidic solutions. In addition, carbon promoted the pitting corrosion resistance of the matrix in a chloride solution. The alloyed carbon in the matrix increased the chromium content in the passive film, and thus the passive film became more protective.

  • High nitrogen-bearing stainless steel (HNS) containing more than Imass% N was successfully created by means of pressurized electro-slag remelting (P-ESR) without the addition of manganese. Excellent localized corrosion resistant properties of the HNS were confirmed in terms of pitting and crevice corrosion in artificial seawater. The repassivation kinetics proved higher repassivation rate for HNS.

  • The effect of laser welding and surface treatment, developed as a method of repairing steam generator tubes, on the pitting corrosion resistance of alloy 690 was examined. The surfaces of some heat-treated Alloy 690 materials were melt-treated using the Nd-YAG laser beam, and then examined to characterize the microstructures. The resistance to pitting corrosion was evaluated by measuring of Ep(pitting potential) through the electrochemical tests and also by measuring the degree of pit generation through the immersion tests. The pit formation characteristics were investigated by observing microstructural changes and pit morphologies. The results show that the resistance to pitting corrosion increases in the order of the following list; solution annealed Alloy 690, thermally treated Alloy 690, and laser surface melt-treated Alloy 690. The melted region was found to have a cellular structure and fine precipitates. It was confirmed that the resistance of Alloy 690 to pit initiation and also to pit propagation was higher when it was laser treated than treated otherwise.

  • Iodine-induced stress corrosion cracking (ISCC) properties and the associated ISCC process of Zircaloy-4 and an Nb-containing advanced nuclear fuel cladding were evaluated. An internal pressurization test with a pre-cracked specimen was performed with a stress-relieved (SR) or recrystallized (RX) microstructure at $350^{\circ}C$, in an iodine environment. The results showed that the $K_{ISCC}$ of the SR and RX Zircaloy-4 claddings were 3.3 and 4.8MPa\;m^{0.5}, respectively. And the crack propagation rate of the RX Zircaloy-4 was 10 times lower than that of the SR one. The chemical effect of iodine on the crack propagation rate was very high, which was increased $10^4$ times by iodine addition. Main factor affecting on the micro-crack nucleation was a pitting formation and its agglomeration along the grain boundary. However, this pitting formation on the grain-boundary was suppressed in the case of an Nb addition, which resulted in an increase of the ISCC resistance when compared to Zircaloy-4. Crack initiation and propagation mechanisms of fuel claddings were proposed by a grain boundary pitting model and a pitting assisted slip cleavage model and they showed reasonable results.
