This paper presents a method to extract flutter derivatives of bridge decks based on a combination of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD), system simulations and system identifications. The incompressible solver adopts an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation with the finite volume discretization in space. The imposed sectional motion in heaving or pitching relies on exponential time series as input, with aerodynamic forces time histories acting on the section evaluated as output. System identifications are carried out to fit coefficients of the inputs and outputs of ARMA models, as to establish discrete-time aerodynamic models. System simulations of the established models are then performed as to obtain the lift and moment exerting on the sections to a sinusoidal displacement. It follows that flutter derivatives are identified. The present approaches are applied to a hexagon thin plate and a real bridge deck. The results are compared to the Theodorsen closed-form solution and those from wind tunnel tests. Satisfactory agreements are observed.
An investigation into the modal interaction of an autoparameteric systemunder broad-band random excitation is made. The specific system examined is a spring-pendulum system with internal resonance, which is known to be a good model for a variety of engineering systems, including ship motions with nonlinear coupling between pitching and rolling motions. By means of the Gaussian closure method the dynamic moment equations explaining the random responses of the system are reduced to a system of autonomous ordinanary differential equations of the first and second moments. In view of equilibrium solutions of this system and their stability we examine the system responses. The stabilizing effect of system damping is also examined.
For study on the unsteady wall interference effect, flows around a forced oscillating airfoil in closed test-section wind tunnels have been numerically investigated by solving compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The numerical scheme is based on a node-based finite-volume method with the Roe's flux-difference splitting and an implicit time-integration method coupled with dual time-step sub-iteration. The Spalart-Allmaras one-equation model is employed for the turbulence effect. The computed results of the oscillating airfoil having a thin wake showed that the lift curve slope is increased and the magnitude of hysteresis loop is reduced by the interference effects. Since the vortex around the airfoil is generated and convected downstream faster than the free-air condition, the phase of lift, drag and pitching moment coefficients was shifted. The pressure on the test section wall shows harmonic terms having the oscillating frequency contained in the wail effect.

This paper proposed an optimal plate spring design for the optical pickup suspension. This method requires an analytic solution of plate spring suspension and it can be obtained by Castigliano's theorem and moment equilibrium. However, it is very complex due to the many design variables coupled and some constraints such as pitching angle in focusing motion caused by the characteristics of plate spring. Because of the complex formulation of the analytical solution that is used as the design objective, the genetic algorithm is used to find the optimal design value satisfying design constraints.

Lift, drag, pitching moment, what we call longitudinal aerodynamic coefficient, effects airplanes directly, so the method to find the accurate result quickly is an important factor from the beginning of the aircraft design. There are different ways to find aerodynamic coefficient such as empirical methods, numerical analysis methods, wind tunnel tests, and finally through an actual flight tests, but choosing the best methods depends on the due date or the cost. The accuracy varies on each design level, but all this methods have relationship to complement and balance each other, so by combining proper methods, the best result can be obtained. At this paper, empirical methods and numerical analysis method were experimented, compared, and reviewed to find the availability of each method and by combining two methods accurate result was obtained. So, we applied this methods to predict the aerodynamic coefficient on cruise configuration aircraft, and was able to obtain more accurate result on the low speed longitudinal aerodynamic coefficient. Also by watching there result, we are able to predict the errors before the actual wind tunnel test.

A low speed wind tunnel test for the canard airplane model was conducted in KARI LSWT. To measure the required level of accuracy, the image system was applied for all elevator deflection and different canard incidence conditions. By doing so, the difference in aerodynamic characteristics between the forward swept and straight canards can be precisely evaluated, and the pros and cons of both canards arrangements can be discussed. Compared with both canard configurations at the same incidence angle setting, the straight canard has benefits in lift and drag, and the slope of pitching moment increases more moderately than the forward swept canard. The listed data and discussion would be useful to whom wants to design a canard airplane.

This paper addresses a robust controller design technique for a nonlinear underwater glider with disturbances. We consider the buoyancy and pitching moment as control inputs, which generate additional nonlinearity on the plant dynamics. To deal with the nonlinearity, we utilize the optimal linearization technique. The conditions for the optimal linearization and the controller design are formulated in terms of matrix inequalities. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through a simulation.

Conceptual studies of a combined-cycle engine have been conducted. Herein, the results are presented. The engine is composed of ejector-jet, ramjet, scramjet and rocket modes, and will be mounted on the Single-Stage-to-Orbit aerospace plane. Propellants are hydrogen and oxygen. Calculated engine thrust performances and cooling requirement of the engine are presented. Pitching moment of the plane with the engine will be balanced even in the vacuum condition. The experimental results of the inlet and the ejector-jet, ramjet and scramjet modes are presented. The effect of the airframe configuration on the engine performance and the thermal environment in the in-side of the plane are also presented. Through the investigations, possibilities of the combined-cycle engine and the aerospace plane are being made clear now.
