  • This paper presents a linear air bearing stage with compensated motion errors by active control of preloads generated by magnetic actuators with combination of permanent and electromagnets. A 1-axis linear stage motorized with a linear motor with 240mm of travel range is built for verifying this design concept and tested its performances. The three motions of the table are controlled with four magnetic actuators driven by current amplifiers and a DSP based digital controller. Three motion errors were measured combined method with laser interferometer and two-probe method with $0.085{\mu}m$ of repeatability for straightness error. The measured motion errors were modeled as functions of the stage position, and compensation were carried out with feedforward control because the characteristics of the motion control with magnetic actuators are linear and independent for each degree-of-freedoms. As the results, the errors were reduced from $1.09{\mu}m$ to $0.11{\mu}m$ for the vertical motion, from 9.42 sec to 0.18 sec for the pitch motion and from 2.42 sec to 0.18 sec for roll motion.

  • The exactly reproduced prosody of a TTS system is one of the key factors that affect the naturalness of synthesized speech. In general, rules about prosody had been gathered either from linguistic knowledge or by analyzing the prosodic information from natural speech. But these could not be perfect and some of them could be incorrect. So we proposed artificial neural network(ANN)s that can be trained to team the prosody of natural speech and generate it. In learning phase, let ANNs learn the pitch and energy contour of center phoneme by applying a string of phonemes in a sentence to ANNs and comparing the output pattern with target pattern and making adjustment in weighting values to get the least mean square error between them. In test phase, the estimation rates were computed. We saw that ANNs could generate the prosody of a sentence.

  • When manufacturing information and communication device that consists of lots of part, it is important to improve the quality of the produced system by inspecting the system accurately and exclude the defected part. In case of LCD which is recently in a great demand, the inspection process of the nut which bonds the back frame to protect the LCD panel has to be done by human labor. It highly required an automatic inspection system which can inspect the nut without wasting human resources. In this paper, we describe the process of developing a system which automatically inspect the status of nuts inserted during the manufacturing of LCD. The nut inspection vision system developed measures the number of nut's spiral, the distance between pitches, the width of a pitch, and the inside diameter of nut. We have adopted lens with high magnifying power and calibration tool and intended to produce automatic lighting for maintaining a stable environment for a high precision system. We also developed the algorithms for analyzing the nut. We apply the system to real factory field and verify that it is better than the man power in terms of error rate.

  • In this paper, embedded control system of segway robot using model based design is presented. Design of control program in embedded system can be implemented simply and easily by model based design method using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Segway robot is consisted of a NXT Mindstorms controller, two DC servo motors, a ultrasonic sensor, a gyro sensor, and a light sensor. It is a unstable nonlinear system and has a control problem of body pitch angle. So controller of segway robot is designed using state feedback LQR control. It is confirmed through design and experiment of controller that the model based design method, that is not depend on target processor, has merits compared with the text based design in aspects such as a program development, an error detection/modify, and an insight of software structure.

  • Purpose: This study is to compare the medial longitudinal arch between heel pain group and normal painless group. Materials and Methods: Heel pain group 242 feet and normal group 140 feet were evaluated through the radiographic images of standing foot-ankle lateral view. Four radiographic indices, talo-1stmetatarsal angle (TMA), calcaneal-1st metatarsal angle (CMA), calcaneal pitch angle (CPA), and arch ratio (AR), were used as well as BMI. Results: There was no difference between heel pain group and normal group in the TMA, CMA, CPA, and AR. But in the BMI, heel pain group showed $1.7\;kg/m^2$ (p=0.0002) higher than normal group. To eliminate the sexual error, male and female were evaluated separately. Male heel pain group showed 2.9 degrees more dorsiflexion (p=0.001) in the TMA, 3.1 degrees greater (p=0.007) in the CMA, 0.01 lower (p=0.028) in the AR, and $1.0\;kg/m^2$ greater (p=0.033) in the BMI than normal male group. There were no difference in the CPA. Female heel pain group showed 3.6 degree greater (p=0.035) in the CMA, and $1.9\;kg/m^2$ greater (p=0.002) in the BMI than normal female group. But other indices demonstrated no differences. Conclusion: talo-$1^{st}$ metatarsal angle, calcaneal-$1^{st}$ metatarsal angle and arch ratio were radiographic indices related with heel pain.

  • Recently as the electronic devices are getting to be more and more smaller, transformers are needed to be micro fabricated using MEMS technology. In this paper transformers have been fabricated and measured by depositing insulation layer to reduce the loss of eddy current and in the middle core a high permeability permalloy was designed based on the turns ratio between primary coil and secondary coil which are 1:1 transformers. (the number of turns of primary coil and secondary coil: 3/3, 5/5, 7/7). The size of the transformers including ground shield are $1mm{\times}1.5mm$, $1mm{\times}1.95mm$, $1mm{\times}2.35mm$ respectively. The line width, pitch and the height of post are 50um. Based on the measured data from the micro fabricated transformers, the 3/3 turns in the primary coil and secondary coil showed the lowest insertion loss with 1.5 dB at 480 MHz and the 7/7 turns in the primary coil and secondary coil showed the highest insertion loss with 2.5 dB at 280 MHz. Also confirmed that the bandwidth goes up as the number of turns goes down. There was some difference between the actual measured data and the HFSS simulation result. It looks as if it is an error of the difference between oxidation of copper or the permeability of SU-8.

  • Recently, the demands of the large scale machine tools gradually increase to machine the large parts, such as large scale crankshaft, yaw and pitch bearings for the wind power generator and the vehicle or aircraft components. But the high technology is necessary in order to develop the huge machine tools. Furthermore, the global market of it has been monopolized by a few companies. So, we need to develop the large scale machine tools and study its core technology to rush into the increasing market. In this study, we carried out the researches for the important core technology of a multi-tasking, machine tool; a large scale 5-axis machine tool of gantry type for multi-task machining. This study is focused on the design of large size gantry type multi-axis machine. In the case of large size of machine the cross rail deflection in the X-axis is significant. To reduce the deflection due to the eccentric spindle head, a special hollow type design in the cross rail with outside ram is adapted in this study. Also, the Zig-Zag motion in the Y-axis is inevitable with the gantry geometry, which is by the un-balancing, different motion at the left and the right columns moving. We tried to reduce the influence of Zig-Zag motion using FEM with different loading conditions at the left and the right side column.

  • We report an ultra-precision lathe designed to machine micron-scale features on a large-area roll mold. The lathe can machine rolls up to 600 mm in diameter and 2,500 mm in length. All axes use hydrostatic oil bearings to exploit the high-precision, stiffness, and damping characteristics. The headstock spindle and rotary tooling table are driven by frameless direct drive motors, while coreless linear motors are used for the two linear axes. Finite element method modeling reveals that the effects of structural deformation on the machining accuracy are less than $1{\mu}m$. The results of thermal testing show that the maximum temperature rise at the spindle outer surface is approximately $0.5^{\circ}C$. Finally, performance evaluations of the error motion, micro-positioning capability, and fine-pitch machining demonstrate that the lathe is capable of producing optical-quality surfaces with micron-scale patterns with feature sizes as small as $20{\mu}m$ on a large-area roll mold.

  • Time-varying tempo of a song is one of the error sources for the identification of a note duration in automatic music recognition. This paper proposes an improved music transcription scheme equipped with the identification of note duration considering the time-varying tempo. In the proposed scheme the measures are found at first and the tempo, the playing time of each measure, is then estimated. The tempo is then used for resizing each IOI(Inter Onset Interval) length and considered to identify the accurate note duration, which increases the degree of correspondence to the music piece. In the experiment the proposed scheme found the accurate measure position for 14 monophonic children songs out of 16 ones recorded by men and women. Also, it achieved about 89.4% and 84.8% of the degree of matching to the original music piece for identification of note duration and pitch, respectively.

  • In this paper, the perceived loudness metering algorithm based on ITU-R BS.1387-1 was investigated and implemented, and its performance was evaluated by applying to 23 pure tones and 9 digital audio samples. Error of the tone test results compared with ISO226:2003 was below 5%, and sample test results, in comparison with Moore's algorithm, showed deviation of less than 4.7% and correlation of 0.96. On the other hand, it was investigated how the implemented algorithm's performance was subject to auditory pitch scale. Its result showed that the algorithm with 37 auditory filters, through correcting a bias effect, has a good performance of less than 2% in comparison with the one with 109 auditory filters.
