  • The effects of Reynolds number on the non-nulling calibrations of a cone-type ave-type probe in low-speed flows have been investigated at Reynolds numbers of 2.04$\times$10$^3$, 4.09$\times$10$^3$and 6.13$\times$10$^3$. The calibration is conducted at the pitch and yaw angles in ranges between -35 degrees and 35 degrees with an angle interval of 5 degrees. In addition to the calibration coefficients, reduced pitch and yaw angles, static and total pressures, and velocity magnitude are obtained through a typical non-nulling reduction procedure. The result shows that each calibration coefficient, in general, is a function of both the pitch and yaw angles, so that the pre-existing calibration data in a nulling mode are not enough in accounting far the full non-nulling calibration characteristics. Due to interference of the probe stem, the calibration coefficient are more sensitive to Reynolds number at positive pitch angles than at negative ones. The calibration data reduced in this study may serve as a guide line in the estimation of uncertainty intervals resulted from the Reynolds number effects at low Reynolds numbers.

  • In this study, the carbon block was prepared using the fluorinated coke and binder pitch by molding compression to increase its density. After fluorination, it is confirmed that the fluorine element on the coke surface was introduced up to 24.14 at% using XPS analysis. The wettability between the fluorinated coke and binder pitch was evaluated according to the reaction temperature. From the result of contact-angle tests, it can be found that the wettability was improved up to 64.7% as more fluorine atoms were introduced on the surface of cokes. Also, the density of the carbon block with the highest amount of fluorine increased with 6.8% compared to that of using the carbon block prepared by the untreated cokes.

  • A dual-layer light guide plate (DLGP) was designed and a simulation was done to optimize the structure of the light guide plates used at backlight units while maintaining the luminance, uniformity and viewing angle by reducing the optical sheet. The characteristic of DLGP with prism pattern with curvature on the top surface is simulated and the luminance and uniformity are obtained. In order to improve the uniformity, the V groove prism pattern on the bottom surface was turned by an angle of $90^{\circ}$. In particular, we used the pitch calculation program to select the value of the ratio (Max : Min) between the pitch at the extreme outside and the pitch at the middle, the number of V groove lines and the variance at the bottom pattern of DLGP. After that, the optimum distance between V grooves was determined. For optimizing the DLGP, we examined the uniformity again by changing the number of pattern grooves on the bottom surface of DLGP. As a result of the simulation, we find that the BLU with DLGP has a uniformity of 90.6% and viewing angle $145^{\circ}$.

  • A performance analysis was conducted according to changes in inflow velocity and the tip speed ratio of a portable horizontal-axis hydro turbine that can be used for marine leisure sports and outdoor activities by using the commercial computational fluid dynamics software ANSYS CFX. By using the analysis result and flow field analysis, the design was reviewed and the performance of the device was confirmed. In addition, data necessary to improve the performance of the hydro turbine were acquired by performing an additional performance analysis according to the variable blade pitch angle. The results among the numerical analysis cases show that the highest performance at all inflow velocities and blade pitch angles if achieved at a tip speed ratio of 4. The output power was found to be 30 W even under some conditions below the design flow rate. Among the numerical analysis cases, the highest output power (~ 85 W) and power coefficient (~ 0.30) were observed at an inlet flow rate of 1.5 m/s, a blade pitch angle of 3°, and a tip speed ratio of 4.

  • In the present study, we investigated planing forces of supercavitated bodies by using the supercavitation shape produced by the disk type cavitator. The cavity shapes are observed to find the immersion draft and planing angle when the stern of the supercavitated body is partially immersed in the water. To make the planing the angle-of-attack (AOA) of the supercavitated body is varied statically against the main flow and the planing tests are carried out for different body shapes that are changed systematically. The drag, lift and pitch moment acting on the body are measured to understand the relation between the planing force and the immersion draft of the supercavitated body. It is found that the planing force increased in general linearly with the immersion draft ratio and the planing angle is certainly not proportional to the immersion draft ratio.

  • There are two major factors which affect the cam design : the pressure angle and the radius of curvature, Cam shape will have an instantaneous radius of curvature at every point. Even though the design constraint of the pressure angle has been satisfied the follower may still not complete the desired contact motion. If the radius of the follower roller is larger than the concave(negative) radius on the cam it occurs the gap between the cam and the follower roller at the contact point. And also if the curvature of the pitch curve of the cam is too sharp the cam profile may be undercut. This paper proposes a new approach which uses the relative velocity of the follower roller parallel to the tangent line at the contact point on the cam surface for determining the pressure angle and the relative acceeration for determining the radius of curvature.

  • This paper proposes a method for estimating the road surface condition and tilt angle using an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to improve the safety in the use of mobility aids for the elderly. The measurements of the accelerometers of the IMU usually include the accelerations caused by not only the gravitational force but also linear and rotational motions. Thus, the gravitational accelerations are first extracted using several physical constraints and then incorporated into the Kalman filter to estimate the tilt angle. In addition, because the magnitudes of the accelerations produced by the rotational motions (roll and pitch motions) vary with the road surface condition, a criterion based on such accelerations is presented to classify the condition of the road surface. The obtained road surface condition and tilt angle are finally combined to provide the safety information (e.g., safe, warning, and danger) for the user to improve the walking safety. Experiments were carried out and the results showed that the proposed method can provide the condition of the road surface, the tilt of the road surface, and the safety information correctly.

  • The paper describes and alternative method based on a new idea to measure the circular movement of machining centers. ISO has employed three testing methods for the acceptance tests of machine tools; the first is a rotating one-dimensional probe method, the second is a two-dimensional probe and a master circular ring, and the third is a kinematic ball bar. The last two methods were proposed and introduced by W. Knapp and J. B. Bryan, respectively. The newly developed method is superior to above two methods; the rotating angle can be detected and the rotating radius is variable. Circular movement errors of machining centers were investigated by the analysis of data measured by R- .THETA. method. Followint observations are obtained 1) The errors which depend on positions, i.e., periodical errors by the pitch of ball screws, errors by compensation of backlash and errors by perpendicularity of X and Y-axis, were analyzed. 2) The errors which depend on NC control system, i.e., errors by the unbalance of position-loop-gaians, errors by velocity-loop-gains and errors by feed speeds, were quantiatively analyzed. 3) The method of extracting error information, which uses moving technique of averaging angle and fourier's analysis data mesured by the R- .THETA. method, was proposed.

  • Purpose: This study evaluated the results of surgical treatment for residual or recurrent deformity after the conservative treatment of idiopathic clubfoot. Materials and Methods: Fifty-one cases (32 patients), who were followed up to skeletal maturity, were reviewed retrospectively. The mean age at the last follow-up was 18.7 years. The surgical options included selective or comprehensive soft tissue release, tendon lengthening and transfer, and various types of osteotomy. The radiology measurements included the talocalcaneal angle and talo-first metatarsal angle in the anteroposterior (AP) view, and the talocalcaneal angle and calcaneal pitch in the lateral view. The radiology measurements were compared with the normal values for adults. The clinical evaluations were made using the ankle-hindfoot score and the midfoot score of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS): excellent (>85), good (71-85), pair (56-70), and poor (<56). Results: At the last follow-up, the percentages of the 51 cases, whose parameter values fell within the normal ranges were as follows: in the AP view, 41.2% (talocalcaneal angle); and 90.2% (talo-first metatarsal angle). In the lateral view, the percentage was 84.3% (talocalcaneal angle). For the calcaneal pitch, the percentages were 61%. The mean AOFAS score was 88.1±10.7 on the ankle-hindfoot score and 86.7±11.5 on the midfoot score. Conclusion: The long-term outcome of patients with idiopathic clubfoot, who underwent surgical treatment after conservative treatment, was found to be 43%-90% of the normal range of radiographic indices. Clinically, the mean AOFAS scores were "excellent". Therefore, a satisfactory result can be obtained by analyzing the elements of deformity more accurately and then using the selective operation method, even if the non-surgical correction method fails.
